Mystery food boxes like Daylesford's Zero Waste Box and Discovery Box offer value through short-dated organic products, with the Zero Waste Box providing approximately 1.5x value (£73.50 worth for £40) while the Discovery Box offers random organic items including cheese, chicken, and broth, though both require careful date management and some items may not be suitable for freezing.

What’s REALLY Inside a Daylesford Mystery Box?Added:
Well, a very good It's going to say morning, but it's afternoon, although it could be morning when you're watching this.
Couldn't it indeed.
It's 20 past 12 and I've only just made my mid-morning coffee. That's how this morning's going, people. Not very good. Now, we have got some builder noise in the background, so I've put my mic on, so hopefully that will get rid of it, but if you hear some drilling, apologies. There's not much I can do about it today because they are taking the render off the house and it's very, very noisy. Now, today I have to share with you. This has literally just arrived in the last 5 minutes, a Daylesford order.
I have done a Daylesford or organic unboxing once before, I think, on this channel.
Twice before. One was a standalone video with a Daylesford um zero food waste What do they call it?
A zero Daylesford zero food waste box, I think it is.
And I had I had Let me restart that. Let me just start that from scratch. I have ordered in the past and filmed on video for you two Daylesford zero waste boxes.
The first one was absolutely brilliant and I loved it and off the back of that video a lot of you went and ordered and you didn't get such good ones.
I then, probably about a year after that, ordered another one and it wasn't as good as my first one, but of course, the very nature of zero waste boxes, you get whatever is close to its sell-by-date on the day that you've ordered it. So, it's a bit hit and miss.
So, I've got a third one.
Let's see. Do Is it going to be third time lucky or is it going to be disaster or is it going to be somewhere in between? Obviously, I have no idea what's in it. Just to point out as well, it's not sponsored. I've ordered these and paid for them with my own money as a regular customer, you know, it's so they don't know that I'm filming it. I certainly haven't contacted them and told them I've got a YouTube channel anything like that.
I do feel like what you get is just the luck of the draw. So, we shall see what is in that one. And then, in addition to that, while I was on my travels around the website, I discovered that they do something called um I can't remember what it is. I've literally just gone and looked at the email to find the name as well. Hang on, that's going to annoy me. So, where's my phone?
Here it is.
Got my phone and let's check the email to see exactly what I've remembered.
It's the Daylesford Sorry. Didn't need to do that. Let's just turn the sound off my phone so we don't get any more nonsense from that.
So, the second box I ordered is called a Daylesford Discovery Box and that also is a surprise box cuz I have no idea what's in it. It didn't say. It didn't give you any indication of what it was.
The cost of it was £40. Each box was £40 by the way and then it's £5.95 for So, yeah, one box is considerably smaller than the other. I don't know if you can see there's a large one on the bottom and a smaller one on top. Don't know which is which. I think usually the big one, the the size of the zero food waste box is the big one. So, should let let let's start with the smaller one of the two on the basis that it's on the top and probably easier to get to.
It says fragile on it.
So, let me get into it and we'll see if we can figure out which is which.
There's a little bit of wet here, so I'm hoping that nothing has got damaged or smashed. There's a very wet corner of this.
In fact, it goes all the way down. I fear something may have got damaged. So, it's difficult to know whether this is the zero food waste or the Daylesford Discovery. I guess we could look at the dates and see, couldn't we?
So, let's move you over there a minute.
First item is an organic chocolate brownie. How nice does that look? And the date on that is the 17th of April.
So, I'm going to guess that this is the zero food waste box.
So, yeah, large size organic chocolate brownie. That runs out on the 17th. I'm filming this on the 16th of April. So, that looks very nice. That would be a nice dessert when we have people over for dinner, I think, with some cream or custard or something. That will go straight in the freezer, I think. It doesn't say doesn't say you can't freeze it. So, I will be freezing it.
Very nice. That will get used. Right, we have a packet of Ooh, that looks nice.
Organic nutty trail mix and it's got cashews and pieces of coconut and sesame covered bits and pieces. I can tell you what's in it, actually. I can tell you. Raisins, cranberries, pumpkin seeds, mulberry mulberries, almonds, goji berries. Don't like goji berries.
Cashew nuts, coconut chips, walnuts, raw pistachio nuts and sunflower oil. That sounds really nice and that one is best before May 2026. So, that's got a good couple of weeks left on it. That sounds very nice. I would enjoy that as a snack.
Lots of stuff that's good for you as well. Right, we've got something wrapped up here. This feels like a glass jar.
Is it that that's No, there's there's something that's Oh, I don't know.
Perhaps the wet is just from the cool pack. There's a cool pack in it. So, perhaps perhaps we haven't got damage.
Perhaps it's all fine. This is organic cranberry sauce.
Cranberry sauce, something we only eat at Christmas, generally speaking. This is runs out at the end of April 2026, but generally speaking, anything in a jar with a seal still intact as this has got I think that will be okay till probably till next Christmas or perhaps I'll find a recipe that has cranberry sauce in it to use that up. Very nice.
Next, we have a little white chocolate chicken lollipop on a stick. I mean, not something I'd buy, but I do like white chocolate.
Best before the 4th of May, so that's got a while to go.
I like white chocolate, so I don't care if it's in the shape of chicken. I'll probably eat that. That would be nice.
Right, yeah, I think it's these cold packs that have um I'm going to take these over to the sink and open them up and then I'll be back to show you what's in it. Okay, I am back. Let me have a slurp of coffee.
I have unboxed the rest of it.
We've had a little bit of leakage out of this one, but that's okay. Right, let's do what was in the cold stuff now.
There's a couple more.
So, we got a thing of organic semi-skimmed milk that's got a couple of days left on it. Today is the 16th. That one runs out on the 18th. Don't use a lot of milk in this house. I use it.
Having said that, I was about to make a batch of Marmite and cheese muffins for the builders and Ashley.
And I need some milk for that and I haven't got enough in the house, so that actually might come in handy for that.
But yeah, semi-skimmed milk is does not excite me from there, especially with 2 days left on it. I like to have lots of time left on my milk. I literally I only have milk in tea and coffee and I generally have one each of those a day.
Ashley doesn't have milk at all.
So, yeah, that's not great for me, but you takes your money and you takes your choice, don't you? So, then we've got Daylesford organic fig and cacao oat bars. There's two little oat bars in that. They're best before the 1st of May. They're a little bit damp, unfortunately.
High fiber and gluten-free. I'll definitely eat those as a little sweet snack. They look quite nice and then we've got some ginger snap milk chocolate. This has got very soggy from the cold packs.
Hopefully, it has Just hoping it's got some foil inside which will have protected the um chocolate itself. Let me just Oh, it's very soggy.
Oh, it's it has got foil. That's good.
Yeah, that's good. It has got foil in it, so the chocolate will be all right.
But um yeah, that sounds quite nice. 56% cocoa milk chocolate with ginger snap biscuits. Ashley will like that. I'm not a massive chocolate eater other than white chocolate, but Ashley will enjoy that, I don't doubt.
Right, we've then got two tubs of hummus. First one is a beetroot and horseradish one, which sounds absolutely delicious. That runs out on the 18th, which is not tomorrow. That's Saturday.
Can you freeze hummus? Might give that a go, I think.
It would probably make the texture weird and then the beetroot one has leaked a bit all over this one.
But that is just a plain normal hummus.
Again, that runs out on the 18th. So, got a couple of days on that. I'll probably try freezing one of those and see how we get on.
Then we have got some Daylesford organic diced lamb. This is grass and forage fed lamb, diced leg of lamb and the pack 400 g, so it's a nice amount for a lamb stew or something like that and the pack price on that is £14.50.
I mean, I wouldn't pay £14.50 for it, but nice. That will make a very nice lamb stew or something similar. And the final item is this Oh, the date on that was the 17th, so that's all right till tomorrow, but I will freeze that.
Um Final one is this chicken and ham hock pie. The chicken and ham hock pie.
Which looks enough to serve two. And what does it say about this? It's organic, of course, isn't it? Um doesn't say I can't freeze it.
Um Oh, it does. It says not suitable for freezing.
Well, being me, I'd probably freeze it anyway, which obviously I don't recommend anybody to do.
Um unless they are fully conversant with the potential risks of doing that. But I've never been caught out yet. I've taken quite a lot of risks. That one actually lasts for 2 days. We might end up having that one for dinner tomorrow night, as it says it can't be um can't be as that one says it can't be frozen. So, yeah, chicken and ham hock pie tomorrow night. That looks very nice, actually. I like the the little pastry shape on the top of it.
So, what I'm going to do, I think, is um go away and add up the prices of all of this, what it would be if I had bought it at full price. And I'm going to come back and tell you whether I think it was worth it. So, hold that thought. I will be back any second for you, but probably quite a few minutes for me. Okay, I am back. Only took me a few minutes but to check out all the prices. The only thing I couldn't find a price for was this little chap here.
Um I'm guessing that was like Easter stock, possibly. So, they're you know, no longer available. Anyway, prices. The lamb was £14.50, which we already knew. Couldn't find the exact pie, but a similar one was £10.25.
Um the two little things of hummus were £4 each. The trail mix is £6.75.
The little thick bars, hold on to your hats, £5.25 for two of those.
The milk £2.75.
The cranberry sauce was £6.
Shocking. Oh, I've just realized I forgot to add one in.
Um this, unbelievably, this chocolate brownie, I mean, delicious as it looks, £16. Yes, you heard me right, £16. It better taste like the nectar of the gods for that price, frankly. If I paid £16 for it, I would expect it to leap into the oven itself, put itself onto a plate, pour cream all over itself, and present it to me on gold-plated silver salver or something.
Gold-plated silver salver? I don't know.
You know what I mean. I forgot to look up the price of this chocolate, but shall we assume, let's call it £4.50 or £4, I think. It's quite a thin bar.
I mean, it's probably £6, but at Daylesford prices, it's probably £6, isn't it? But I'm going to call it £4.
So, the total of all of that adds up to £73.50.
As opposed to the £40 that I paid for it. So, you are getting good value for money. You're getting 1 and 1/2 times, approximately, a little bit more than that um in terms of value for money and what it's costing. But you've got to factor in, of course, the dates. You know, everything is short-dated.
And you've got to factor in the fact that probably some of these you wouldn't have ordered yourself. I mean, diced lamb, we're always going to use diced lamb. A nice chicken and ham pie, we're always going to eat use that. Cranberry sauce will get used. We love hummus, whether we'll get through it in time or whether it will freeze okay, I don't know.
Um the trail mix will definitely get eaten. The chocolate brownie definitely wouldn't have been something that I bought at £16, but definitely will get used up. That will go in the freezer and get used.
These two will definitely get eaten. Um these little bars will get eaten. Would I have bought them? No.
Um would I have bought either of these?
Probably not. But it will get eaten. The cranberry sauce, did I say that? That will get eaten. And probably some of the milk, at least. I might try freezing the milk. I know that you can freeze milk.
Um my mom freezes milk quite successfully, so I might freeze um a little bit of the milk and see how that works. But overall, I'm fairly happy with that. I think that's an okay box. Um that I don't think I'm ever going to get one that was as good as my first one again. I think I was very, very lucky with that. But yeah, I'm interested to try beetroot and horseradish hummus, particularly. I think I might pop out and get myself some tortilla chips to have that as a snack with a little bit later on today.
But um right, we've got the second box to get on with, haven't we? Let me move this lot over. And um let's just pop all of that to one side over here.
I need to get a wiping cloth. Bear with.
Where's me wiping cloth gone?
You can never find a cloth when you need one.
Let's just little bit damp up here. Right, you go over there. And let's see what we're getting. So, the second box, to remind you, was the Daylesford Discovery Box.
So, we are going to see what we can discover from Daylesford in here. And it literally gave me no idea what was in it at all. So, it's very much a mystery box, this one.
It's a good size and it's got some good weight to it, which I realize means absolutely nothing, but quite a lot of packaging as well.
Right.
Okay.
So, we have got Let's undo it first. We've got two more wet packs in here. So, they don't feel too soggy, so we can probably open them up here. Let's get rid of the box to start with. And right, first item is feels like a jar, I would say. It's two jars. Exciting. So, we have got Oh, nice. We've got some organic blueberry jam.
And some Oxfordshire honey. That looks it They're both very cold. They've been next to the cold packs. But delicious.
We love honey. I use honey in a lot of cooking. And I'm sure Ashley will enjoy the blueberry jam. I've Or I could bake with it. I could do a blueberry jam sponge or something like that. She says as though she does baking. How hilarious.
This feels like it could be a loaf of bread. This is a loaf of bread. What a bizarre thing to send through the post.
It doesn't feel the freshest, I have to say.
Um wasn't really expecting a loaf of bread.
Doesn't say what sort of bread it is or anything. In fact, there's no paperwork in here at all. That's quite odd. Yeah, I wouldn't have expected a loaf of bread, but probably slice it up and freeze it.
And it doesn't tell me what type it is.
I mean, shouldn't it have like an ingredient list on it or something? Oh, and we've got some eggs.
We have got some Daylesford organic six free-range eggs.
They look like normal eggs. They're full of shite.
I need any of that.
Don't That was unnecessary packaging.
Oh, perhaps it was in there because it was eggs and they were sending them through the post. They've all got here unscathed, anyway. And they look very nice. Um Yeah, that's all good.
Right, what's in these cold packs?
Feel like I wonder if this is sort of the same thing as the zero-waste food box, but you just get a random but but you get longer dates on the products.
I wonder if that's it, cuz it just seems like a bit of a random selection. Um I wonder if you get something different in every single Daylesford Discovery Box. Cuz it does seem quite random.
Right, in that cold pack, we had cheese.
Now, I'm fully on board with the cheese.
You know me, we've got something that's heart-shaped.
Was that for Valentine's Day? I ask myself. Have we got a date on it?
We have. 1st of June. Oh, it's all right. It's got a month on it. Straight from our Cotswold Creamery organic Baywell cheese. Made by hand on our farm. Our award-winning rind-washed Baywell cheese has a bold, unique flavor and soft, buttery texture. Yum.
Um we love it with our award-winning fruit bread.
Nice. Right, we have then got, and this is why I said it's random, some organic chicken thighs or chicken legs. Chicken thighs. Organic chicken thighs. Which look very nice.
Um they've got till the 24th of April, so plenty of time on those, date-wise.
Um yeah, nice. But random, as I say. So, do What Let me know your thoughts. Or have you had a Daylesford Discovery Box before? And um you know, if so, have you had the same items as me or different ones? I feel like it could be different ones.
So, this is a lot of packaging, isn't it? Two two of these great big plasticky There There's a lot of packaging going on in this, which I realize you sort of have to do. You know, I think I might have left something in there.
No, it's only the wet thing. You have to squeeze the insides out. No, I'll just let me bung them in the sink.
Throw them at the sink, more like.
Right, what have we got here?
We have got This looks nice. Chicken bone broth. Now, I know this is about £7 by itself, because they sell it in Marks & Spencer's.
Um with ginger and greens, that looks really nice and I will enjoy trying that. I've I've looked at it in Marks and Spencer's before, never been able to bring myself to try it because it's so expensive, but it does always look very nice. Look at that. And but very healthy as well.
Nourishing broth of ginger, greens, and organic free-range chicken bones.
Slow-cooked to release the nutrients and high-quality collagen within. I'll enjoy trying that.
Right.
Last item here.
It's something Okay, organic live natural yogurt. That would be nice with some of the blueberry jam in it, wouldn't it? Nice.
Okay, and that is it.
You don't get an awful lot for 80 quid these days, do you? But Daylesford is expensive. It is expensive. They're all nice things. I like trying new things. I love a mystery box. You know me, I do like a mystery box. I think it's a bit of fun. Everything will get used in some way or another, pretty much. So, that's good and I'll be trying some things that I wouldn't have tried anyway, particularly this.
Quite excited about the cheese, I've got to say, and also the pie.
Um I don't know. What are your thoughts?
I'm a bit torn. I I bought it, obviously, in order to create this video. Would I be buying it as a punter, just taking a chance? I'm not entirely sure. But let me know your thoughts. I'd be very interested to know what everybody thinks about this. Have you tried it? Do you like Daylesford? Do you think it's ridiculously overpriced? So, I'm sort of somewhere in the middle, I think. Somewhere in the middle. Anyway, I'll pop the links in for the two boxes that I've tried. If anybody's interested in trying them, I'll pop those in the description box. Thank you so much for watching. Hope you enjoyed it and I'll see you again soon. Bye-bye.
