Police Brutality Is An Asian-American Issue

[00:00:00]It's absolutely true that uh police misconduct and police brutality targeting our black and brown communities is an absolute epidemic in this country. Um but, you know, oppression is directed at perceived powerlessness, and it impacts Asian people. It impacts poor communities. Uh traditionally, we hear less about the police misconduct directed towards Asians for a couple of reasons. And one is that within our community, particularly in immigrant communities, there's a lot of uh shame and sense of humiliation when they are accused of uh being involved in a crime. So, there's definitely um underreporting of these events.

[00:00:50]And then, it feeds into uh confirmation bias. So, for example, if I'm driving down the street and I see the police engaging a black or brown person, uh I will often stop, like a lot of people do, to monitor the situation because I'm concerned about the potential abuse.

[00:01:09]But, even I don't have that natural inclination or reaction when I see the police interacting with other Asian people. And I think externally, there is this toxic expectation and labeling of all Asians as uh the model minority, and that is despite what we know historically about targeting certain um Asian communities and what we see um these days uh on TV every day with our own eyes, we see ICE raids targeting Asian people.
