North Sentinel Island, part of India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands, maintains a strict exclusion zone to protect its indigenous Sentinelese people from outside contact, as diseases common in the modern world can be devastating to populations without immunity, and historical attempts at contact have resulted in fatalities, demonstrating that respect for isolated communities means maintaining distance rather than attempting visitation.

The Forbidden Islands: The Untouched Mystery of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands #didyouknowAdded:
There's a place in the Indian Ocean that keeps the modern world at arms length.
Boats pass by, helicopters glance down, then move on.
On the map, it's a tiny speck west of Myanmar, part of India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands. From above, turquoise reef, thick jungle, bright shore. From the ground, do not come closer. This is North Sentinel Island. The people here live in deep isolation, and that isolation is protection.
Diseases we shrug off, a cold, the flu, can be devastating to those without immunity. [music] Add long memories of unfriendly encounters, and the answer to, "May we visit?" is no.
India drew an exclusion zone around the island. No tourists, no journalists, [music] no landings. Patrols keep a lawful distance, so everyone else must, too.
Attempts at contact came and went. Gifts from boats, cautious waves, sometimes silence, sometimes arrows.
In 2006, [music] two fishermen drifted too close. In 2018, a visitor tried to land. Neither returned. The lesson is simple. Respect is not visiting.
Let the forest be a wall, the reef a moat, and our promise, distance.
North Sentinel Island does not need us to complete its story.
