When social safety nets shrink, when government support for child care and health care disappear, the burden of that care does not disappear. It shifts into families. And historically, that means that burden shifts onto women. When politicians say they want to strengthen the traditional family, what they're often saying is that they want to move this unpaid labor, this care work into the private household, where it's unpaid, so that the economy still gets to benefit from this labor. It just doesn't have to pay for it.
