When choosing between steel and carbon fiber bicycles, steel frames offer superior durability, easier repairability, and better resale value, while carbon fiber bikes provide lighter weight, greater speed, and more agility; the optimal choice depends on individual priorities such as long-term maintenance, portability, and intended use.

We have to talk about loss: Surly Karate Monkey vs Scott Scale Gravel 10
Added:It's getting hot in here.
Literally.
>> [sighs] >> Literally, the walls are closing in.
Now, what's happening in this country today is a little bit scary because the government have given the landlords less powers.
So, it's it's harder for a landlord to evict a tenant.
So, they're getting less powers now.
>> [sighs and gasps] >> That's good for people like me who rent, isn't it?
Well, unfortunately, there's an unforeseen consequence of that because if you look around now, you will see for sale signs everywhere.
What's happening is as landlords are losing their powers, which should be good for renters, they're selling their properties.
And as a result, they can give you up to 2 months' notice to get out.
Now, I can testify to that because it's happened to me a couple of times now.
Usually, when we see tragedies and and things going on in the world, it doesn't affect us, but this one has affected me.
So, what what do we do with our beloved bicycles and our collections? You've seen people with the collections on telly.
They collect whatever they collect, and the us bike lovers, we have more than one bikes more than one bike, but what happens when a tragedy happen when a tragedy like this befalls us? It could be the eviction.
It could be divorce. We could lose our jobs.
Nobody thinks what will happen to our bicycles because as the landlords are selling their properties, the other landlords are taking advantage and putting their rent up. So, as a consequence of that the the places where we can live are getting smaller because that's all we can afford. And as places get smaller, so do our collections.
And what what what's bigger than a bike in your collection?
Not much. So, we have to downsize. We have to downsize our bicycles.
Now, this has happened to me a couple of times, so I can testify, sister that this is a very scary thing. You could lose your job. You could be get You could get evicted. That's just This is just doing a video on it. I see that. Anyway, so this this video today is a little bit scary.
But we need to talk about this so we're prepared. What do we do?
If it comes to it, my bicycle collection has already dwindled because of the situation.
So, what will I do if I have to move again to a smaller property if I get one? It's getting difficult out there now.
The rigmarole you have to go through to get a to rent is getting insane.
I'm not I'm not I'm not even kidding. If it comes to me living in a tent, guys.
Some kind of tent or a caravan. Things are getting bad. It's getting hard to rent.
what's going to happen to my bicycles?
I'm going to have to look into this.
Fortunately, I'm in somewhere it it might be secure, it might not be secure. This is the nightmare I'm unconsciously living with. And not just me, millions of people now in Britain we're living with this over our heads.
Will we be evicted tomorrow? And what's going to happen with our stuff?
But today, I'm going to look at my two favorite bikes.
>> [snorts] >> And [sighs] I'm going to have to look into the harsh reality if things get worse, which one will I have to get rid of?
Which one will I have to sell?
Let's look into that.
>> Bob two wheels, [music] he loves [singing] bikes, loves them.
>> I can't fix this. Now, I enjoy watching people's collections on the television if it's figures, teapots. Have you ever seen them? And they have like the biggest collections in the world. Or whatever. And even if they just love collecting stuff.
But you never think Well, I I actually do think about this.
What happens if they lose their their house, their home? What happens to their collection?
We have to We have to look into this.
Anyway, I I collect Well, I don't collect. I've got a few bicycles. And I also collect figures.
And it's getting really difficult and really scary now to to have collections.
Because we could just lose our home, we could lose everything at the whim of another human being.
What what what's the options? Could I put my stuff in storage? Well, that costs money.
Could I get family members to look after me?
Well, no.
That's not an option. So, what what what what are you what are we going to do, guys? If if it if things get real.
>> [snorts] >> Now, I'm I'm just glad that I am privileged to have some sweet bicycles because people are war at the moment. So, I have still got it good and I'm very very grateful.
But, it's something I have to look into.
I have I have had some sweet bikes in the past and I've had to sell them because of unforeseen circumstances that were not my fault.
Now, you can learn by this and make amendments and adjust, but life it's life, guys.
You could lose everything.
Anyway, today I'm looking at the Salsa Karate Monkey, my steel is real bicycle, and my brand new bicycle. Yes.
Yes.
There is some irony there.
Irony.
Um maybe hypocrisy that I've got myself a brand new bicycle, but when you see it, you'll understand why.
>> [music] [singing] >> In a world of uncertainty, sometimes we have to make sacrifices.
>> [music] >> Well, if it came to it, guys, and I have to downsize my home one more time, I don't know if I can I can keep both of these beauties.
So, which is to be?
Steel is real >> [sighs] >> or my carbon is carbon is >> [snorts and clears throat] >> carbon fiber?
Which one would I keep? Let's look at both of them.
So, as I've previously as I have a forementioned, Sorry about that, Luce. I'm just doing a video on on Um see past. As I have a forementioned, I've already downsized my bicycles.
>> [sighs] [gasps] >> Um I've got rid of a lot of bike stuff.
D-Day has come.
Not not literally, but let's say D-Day has come, right?
>> [sighs] >> And I can only have one bike.
I I shiver at the thought of it.
Anyway, steel >> [sighs] >> Silly, classic monkey, or my Scott Scale Gravel 10, full carbon bike.
See, I can't even Right.
Okay? Which one am I keeping?
Age, this one is 2019, that's 2026.
>> [snorts] >> So, this is older. However, price-wise, I would say they are similar because I built this myself and I put boom >> [snorts] >> the good stuff on there.
So, price-wise, they're not too dissimilar. That's 2,400, say.
This stock if you buy it is 2,000 but with the XTR on it it must be taking it up there. So, price-wise similar.
Sentimental-wise, I could not buy this bike now or it would be very difficult. Let's go through the pros and cons of which one I should keep if it comes to it.
>> [snorts and gasps] >> I could not buy this Karate Monkey now.
A, the yellow. It would probably be dead hard to get that now because it's 2019.
I probably could get it but what condition would it be in etc. Would I get a brand new one? I don't know.
>> [gasps] >> The Scott at the moment this year I can get them because they're brand new in the shops.
So, this would be more difficult to get.
I could get the Scott easier. So, at a push I could save up and repurchase that.
This one I couldn't. I would have to buy the new model and say if I didn't like the color. So, the Sale is winning on rarity.
They're both the same on price and availability the Sale is winning.
So, it's a point to the Sale.
Parts.
I've custom chose my parts. That one was stock. I've changed a few things.
But this at the moment pips it for parts because these are the parts I wanted.
That's a rare bar now. You try and find that. It's very rare. This is what I'm saying.
>> [sighs] >> I will eventually um get that perfection as I like it. See, look at the paint on there. We'd have to scrape it down. See, look.
>> [sighs and gasps] >> Anyway, it's dusty down here.
Okay.
So, the Sale is my workhorse. As you can see, I have the panniers.
Uh it's a do-all, take-everywhere bicycle. I have two sets of wheels for it, a chunky set and a skinny set.
Where are they? Here.
So, that will blow up 2.4s.
They're 2.8 3 3 um inches width. So, I have two wheels. So, if I want to go off-road or mess about or just be comfortable, fatties. If I want some speedy speedy, put the skinnies on. So, basically and it and because it has a thing called not boost, um you can stretch with your hands or shrink the frame to fit different size wheels on. So, that is really versatile.
I can't with my Scott. However, I could probably put skinnier tires on.
Um a lot skinnier, skinny wheels. So, I could make that more racier.
The Scott is hella fast.
It is a fast speedy bike.
So, that would win this in a race any day. That also has um the little bolts on it so I could carry um luggage on it.
So, I could actually go far, do distance rides with the Scott as I can with the Surly.
The Scott is easy to maneuverable in tight spaces. It's so light.
Throw the wheels on and off.
Light. So, I can if it comes to I have to live in a shoe box, I can carry it in and out of my shoe box window. So, there's no problems there.
Light.
It's agile.
>> [gasps] >> The Sale is a bit more clunky.
A bit heavier. We're talking say 20 lbs, 10 kilos for that one. Must be talking about 30 lbs a bit more for this one.
So, the Scott will win on weight and speed.
And they're similar on how far they can go.
Psychological, guys. Psychological.
I used to worry that this would rust because it's steel, but I don't know more because I found out they coat it.
So, it they're basically rust proof.
I am going to do a video, guys, on on the value of Sale is because I've been thinking about the Sale a lot.
And it's looking like it's going nowhere, but let's continue. Going to do that videos soon.
So, that's lighter and more agile and speedier.
And more readily available. That's more popular.
I'd say the Scott Scott is a massive manufacturer.
So, they're more popular. And color wise, I love the yellow, but I love the purple and black.
So, they're very different very different, but I love them equal.
That's got electric gearing.
This has got the mechanical gearing.
They've both got a hydraulic brakes.
>> [snorts] >> Stopping power on the Sale is is second to none. Absolutely. The shifting is superb. Smooth, crisp as the day I fitted it. No problems there. That has electric gearing, so I would have to charge it in the shoe box, Get you know, replace batteries eventually. So that could be a problem. That is not It is very maintenance free, but it has electrical gears. So in the future At the moment it's brand new, there's no problems, but in the future the electrical stuff could be a headache. I don't know. At the moment it's carefree.
When the my hair, no maintenance whatsoever.
So, which one?
Which one? I don't even like to think about it. Which one would have to go?
Which one would I have to get rid of?
It's like choosing between my children.
Which one? The house is on fire now.
Which one am I going to save? Well, that one cuz it's closer to the door and the exit.
So, let's recap. We've got That will last forever. It really will.
The steel, I have no problems and it is a light steel. The carbon worries me no end because if it dinky or dented or deep scratchy, I would I would really worry about that. If that goes, I could get the carbon repaired, but it's more likely to get damaged so I can't use that again.
Steel easily fixed, easily welded.
Um parts, easy get parts on to that, easy get parts to the Scott.
The Scott is 12-speed, so it's more up to date with the parts.
Um this is old school No, it's old school. 11-speed, it's not old school, is it?
But it it's not brand spanking up to date. However, look at them. Test of time or what? Come on. I I don't like the way this Shimano going. I like the the the style.
>> [sighs] >> I just love this. Anyway, um fitting parts, this I can swap out and change absolutely anything. If I want a different stem, go and get a different stem, throw it on.
Seat post, everything, I can just swap out.
Get the measurements, swap it out easy.
Not as easy with the Scott, as I found out, because that is a custom a custom fitted um stem because of the cables, the way it is, the headset, and all that.
So, I can't just throw any stem on there.
Um it has to have one with grooves in it, so it can fit the cables.
It has a certain one that it has to get the cover off, so I I have replaced it at the moment, because I've ordered a new one.
But, I've just ordered the same one, but smaller, because it's a headache.
So, parts I think quite simple, but can be a bit of a faff with these.
It's a high-end carbon bike. These high-end ones can be a bit a bit temperamental, you know, oh no, we want we want certain parts. Um also, everything's a bit squeaky with at the moment. That's not straight, and the seat is loose, because I've took it apart a bit to Anyway, that's a different story.
So, parts The Cervelo wins again. It's just battering at the moment.
It's battering the Scott.
Two bikes in one, easy parts, la- last probably last forever.
However, for pure speed, um the the Scott's taking it. It It's It's well taken. It's so fast and really agile. This is a bit with the panniers on and fully loaded, it can be a bit slumberly, but it's still fast.
One bike fits all that is.
Um what I found myself using is the Scott. I'm using the Scott all the time. Just because in this day and age, I need to get to places quickly and that that is getting me there.
In many many occasions, getting me there quicker than a road bike because it's still got the chunky tires on.
So, have we looked at everything? Which we're going to keep?
I have to choose one. I have to.
>> [gasps] [sighs] >> Um which one if I had to sell it? You know, value resale value.
Y- Saleys hold their price. You'll still get a lot of money for your Sale.
Would I still get a lot of money for that Scott second hand? I'm not sure. I haven't looked into that. A carbon brand new bike, probably probably still get a lot of money for that.
So, value resale value, similar.
It's just so two different bikes.
Absolute different bikes.
Just the same amount of love you have for them.
It's It's a really difficult decision.
>> [gasps] >> Which would I keep? Which would I keep?
I'm going to pause right now and have a think and deep think.
>> [music] [music] [music] [bell] [music] [music] >> We'll live in a tent. We're just going to go and live in a tent.
Buy a tree.
Not buy a tree, buy next to a tree. I'm going to buy a big chain, lock them both up. I cannot I cannot decide.
This has been the love of my life for so long, 6 years.
I'm not parting with that. And the speed and the the electric gears and the it's just so pretty. It is a beautiful bike.
I I can't I can't do it. I can't decide.
You come up with me, both of you.
We're going to go live in a tent.
We're going to squat.
>> [sighs] [gasps] >> I can't do it, guys. I thought I could.
I thought by the end of the video I could. At one point, when that was brand new, I thought, "I'm going to have to sell my Salehi. I'm going to have to There's just no room.
And I need the money.
>> [sighs] >> But I I can't. I can't.
Sorry.
Sorry, landlords.
It's either me and the bike me and the bikes or nothing at all.
Which would you save, guys? Which one?
And if you've had had the same dilemma, maybe you've had a divorce, you've had to get rid of your bicycles, your collections. I've got rid of loads of bike parts.
>> [gasps and snorts] >> However, I've saved loads of bike parts because future-proofing these bikes the because the the Scott is 2026, you'd think that was more future-proofed, wouldn't you? However, if you get the love of your life bike and you get spare parts, it could potentially last forever. I've got a load of cassettes, a load of chains, 11 speed, a load of tires. So, this could last This could outlast that one.
Especially that it's steel.
Anyway, I don't know. I'm sorry. Don't you I hate it when you don't get a definitive answer.
I Brain malfunctioning. Brain malfunctioning. Brain malfu- I Choose one. Choose one. I'll keep the Sily. I'll keep the Sily karate monkey. No, I'll keep the I love the Scott. I love you so much.
>> Game over.
>> God damn it.
