[00:00:00]Backrooms stuns the industry with a crazy opening weekend. The Mandalorian and Grogu is getting pulled from IMAX screens. Anthony and I got to talk to Steven Spielberg and discuss Disclosure Day. Primetime starring Robert Pattinson dropped an [music] awesome trailer. The Birds is getting remade for some reason and there's so much more to break down >> [music] >> in this packed episode of Movie News.

[00:00:25]What's up, movie friends? Welcome back to Raiders of the Lost Podcast. We are the ultimate film and TV podcast and this is the weekly episode where we go through all of the industry news so you don't have to. There's some wild stories, incredible box office performances, and some great reveals this week. But, let's take it away with that very healthy, unbelievably impressive box office. James, talk about the new contender in the top 10.

[00:00:48]Backrooms stunned Hollywood, stunned the entire industry with a mega opening, roughly about $85 million opening domestic weekend for a movie that cost $10 million to produce?

[00:01:01]>> Yes.

[00:01:02]>> Holy crap. Global total, $118 million internationally for A24's biggest opening of all time. It's opening day alone was $38.4 million on its domestic opening day. It's the fourth biggest opening of all time for a horror film.

[00:01:18]The second biggest opening of any of it opening day of 2026 for any film. And one of the top five biggest openings for horror in general. Kane Parsons at 20 years old is the youngest director of all time to have a number one film on its opening weekend. This is the craziest news and I think it just shows you that people want original movies. For years, the last five years, I have the receipts. People were saying, "Hollywood is dead. Hollywood's over. Movies are dead. Theaters are going to die." And look what happens when you make original stories from people who have organic audiences.

[00:01:54]Horror is booming, but people want new things. People want original stories. We We don't want to see the same reboot over and over again. And there's some reboots in this episode we'll talk about. This The fact that it is already just in this weekend one of A24's highest performing films just in 3 days shows that audiences are hungry for new stories even from A24. And the fact that like if you compare it to maybe the last 10 A24 releases, do they even stack up to this one? It is very impressive.

[00:02:22]So is an obsession which broke $100 million at the box office at this point.

[00:02:27]In its second weekend it pulled $28.5 million at the domestic box office.

[00:02:34]And remember guys, there's a Star Wars movie in theaters and it got beat. And Star Wars the second weekend got beat by two independent horror films. One was made for less than a million dollars. And this is one of the reasons why Mandalorian and Grogu is getting pulled from IMAX theaters early.

[00:02:51]Masters of the Universe when that drops on June 3rd is going to take over the screens which Mandalorian and Grogu were supposed to have going into June because Mandalorian and Grogu only pulled $25 million in its second weekend with an 81% drop. And I mean that shows that, you know, you got two movies that gave audiences something new and then you have a movie that just gives audiences exactly what they've always gotten. And that audience is telling you what they want. And it's it's kind of scary to see did Disney have they killed Star Wars?

[00:03:20]Is Star Wars Is Star Wars dead? I think Ryan Gosling might save it. Star Fighter I think could I think that's the only hope they have. That's why I think they're going with that film, but this is horrible horrible news for Disney to in 2 weeks Mandalorian and Grogu has only grossed $137 million domestic. At this pace it might not even hit $200 million. Backrooms almost matched >> Yeah.

[00:03:42]>> its first four days at the box office with Mandalorian's domestic total. That's crazy.

[00:03:47]>> And Backrooms is absolutely going to outpace it cuz of the word of mouth I think. I think ultimately it'll wind up with a bigger domestic haul than Mandalorian and Grogu, which is >> I mean we might have a similar obsession situation. Obsession it almost doubled its its opening weekend here.

[00:03:59]>> Wow.

[00:04:00]>> And then still performing extremely well at the box office is Michael in its sixth weekend 12.575 million dollars 340 million domestic closing in on 900 million global.

[00:04:12]This is a [ __ ] gigantic movie and it's got so much great word of mouth and second repeat viewings. People are going to a lot of theaters especially in Europe are putting together the sing-along and dance screenings. So people are getting up and dancing and there's crazy videos of like entire theaters packed with people and then they run up to the to the front of the screen and start dancing when Michael Jackson's dancing. There's a scene there's a moment where uh during one of the accidents when Michael's hair catches on fire at the Pepsi performance, people are like fanning his hair at the screen.

[00:04:44]>> [laughter] >> So people are having a lot of fun in theaters are making special screening events for viewers, which is unique. My girlfriend's at a sing-along one right now where people just get up and dance while the film's playing. That's something that is I think is really helping the longevity of this film. The breadwinner next up in the box office starring uh Nick uh Nicholas No, Nick uh Bargatze, right the comedian?

[00:05:08]>> Oh, I don't know who that is.

[00:05:08]>> Yeah, uh hold on. Let me double check.

[00:05:11]>> He's super funny. You'd recognize >> this is about his like he he's in a I've seen the trailer for this, yeah.

[00:05:17]>> One sec. One sec. I Nate Bargatze, that's what it is.

[00:05:20]>> Yes.

[00:05:21]>> Um super funny comedian. He's hosted us on SNL a few times. His movie The Breadwinner opened to 77.5 million opening weekend domestically. Pretty good. What's cool about this is for one of the days of the week they did very cheap ticket sales. I think they were charging $5 per ticket because he wanted like his comedy show people would be able to afford to go. It's expensive out there. He wanted families to be able to go and see this movie. So I thought that was really cool that they they lowered ticket prices for specific theaters for this film.

[00:05:45]Devil Wears Prada 5.8 million at the opening at this weekend box office in its seventh week. Pressure, new film from Focus Feature Features starring Brendan Fraser Andrew Scott, pretty bad opening weekend. Three 5.4 million dollars opening domestic on a budget of about 80 million dollars. This is This is going to be a very costly film.

[00:06:07]You're going to end up lighting a lot of money on fire.

[00:06:09]Um too bad. The movie looks fantastic. I want to go see it this week if I have time.

[00:06:14]Uh it's a World >> War II drama >> and it's really interesting story about the days leading up to the invasion of the seaborn invasion of the Allied forces on the beaches of Normandy and in around France and how meteorology was a major component to the successful invasion which shaped and changed our world, but that is a very very low performance for an 80 million dollar budget.

[00:06:38]>> I expect this to do really well on rentals because it seem I the audience for this movie is the audience that doesn't go out to the theaters as much as any any more, yeah. As evident as by this weekend with these young viewers going to theaters. So, this is I think definitely age demographic 45 and up kind of movie.

[00:06:55]>> What's so interesting is for the last five years we've been told by the industry and insiders that young people aren't going to theaters and that movies are going to die because this next generation they're up so obsessed with Tik Tok and on YouTube. Meanwhile, you let these young kids make movies and who turns out the younger generation and the younger generation right like anyone ever has before.

[00:07:18]>> And then I I like it and then just looking back just a few months ago to Iron Lung made 20 million opening weekend which is much more than a bunch of these movies made in their opening weekend. So, that's it really is a sign for the times of the kinds of movies that will be made. Focus Features did both those films Pressure and Obsession.

[00:07:35]Where do you think they're going to lean in the future?

[00:07:37]>> Definitely to Obsession. They'll never make another movie like Pressure again.

[00:07:40]>> Probably not unless it's a great director. 80 million dollar was really I think they probably green-lit after Oppenheimer and thought that's going to be you know, this is what people want.

[00:07:47]Passenger also strong performer 5.2.7 million in its second weekend at the box office. It's pulled in 15.3 domestic in just 2 weeks. Pretty solid for I think that cost about $5 million, $6 million for a budget. Mortal Kombat 2 still is going to be in the red. It only pulled in $2 million in its third weekend at the box office. Tuner unfortunately for Black Bear Pictures opened to a very low performance at 1.6 million at the domestic box office.

[00:08:17]This movie's awesome. It's a top five of the year for me, but no one really knows it exists unfortunately. And it's it's really terrific. Leo Woodall stars in it. Plays a piano tuner who eventually starts breaking into safes because of his great hearing, which is also a detriment to him, but unfortunately very very low opening weekend.

[00:08:37]>> Yeah, you should you skip Sheep Detective still >> well.

[00:08:40]>> It's up to almost 60 mil domestic, man.

[00:08:43]Sheep Detective. Yeah, pretty good job.

[00:08:44]We're talking sheep. That's all you needed.

[00:12:15]>> And my favorite trailer so far this week was Primetime, >> Yes.

[00:12:19]>> which I I don't think anybody was expecting. They did a great job, and this is the new Robert Pattinson film where he's playing Chris Hansen, the showrunner and star >> What are you doing here?

[00:12:29]>> of How to Catch a Predator. Uh and I forgot that this show was so popular that it was on a primetime slot, which is hence the name Primetime. And this is really interesting film with all sorts of filming format styles and different kinds of camera formats that looks outstanding. And it looks like it showcases Hansen building the show, selling it, and then it becoming so popular. And also, some kind of it has this really cool eerie um mysterious but very thrilling quality to it. I love the the filmmaking of it.

[00:13:02]It looks really fun. And Chris it it Pattinson is Chris Hansen. I love his choices as an actor.

[00:13:08]>> Yeah. He always surprises you with his with what projects he chooses to do, and this is uh this is no this is amazing to see.

[00:13:14]>> If you didn't grow up in America watch American TV, How to Catch a Predator was a huge huge show for years. You can watch it on YouTube. It's it's terrifyingly tragic and revealing.

[00:13:24]Chris Hansen and the team would set up child predators by creating fake chat accounts and getting these men to meet up with a 13-year-old girl or 15-year-old girl and they'd have cameras hidden inside the house, outside the house. They'd be waiting outside with police. Chris Han- the guy would walk in with sometimes a six-pack, sometimes with pizza.

[00:13:47]Um had already sent explicit images to the girls who were really adults posing as girls or or team of people pretending to chat.

[00:13:56]And it was crazy to watch and shocking.

[00:14:00]And then Chris Hansen would walk in the room randomly and say, "Hey, what are you doing here?"

[00:14:05]And then he would calmly and effectively break down this man to the point where they would either succumb to the punishment or try to run away and they get caught. There was always police waiting outside. And what's interesting about it is watching the show, I I was I went on a deep dive of it like last year. I was watching all that of so many episodes.

[00:14:24]Um from the TV standpoint back then on broadcast TV, cinematically it wasn't very interesting. A lot of hidden cameras, uh a lot of DV tape, a lot of videotape form- formats. So it didn't look as dramatic as it really probably was in person. But I think what the film looks like it's doing so well is capturing how serious and how dramatic it was to be in those moments with the visuals, with the tone and the drama because when you watch it from a TV perspective, it's like hidden cameras, sim- sim- simple cameras. So it looked uh low production value. But I think if you were in person, it would have been so much more eerie and and disturbing.

[00:14:59]>> And a documentary filmmaker is it's making it this guy named Oppenheimer.

[00:15:04]Um and this is I think it's his his first narrative film.

[00:15:07]>> Uh I think he had an Oscar nom >> Yeah. Documentary a couple years ago.

[00:15:10]>> Yeah. Yeah.

[00:15:11]>> It looks [ __ ] sick.

[00:15:12]>> great. What I'm very disappointed about is The Birds is going to get remade. I love Sarah Snook. She's going to star in the film, but I mean, what are we doing?

[00:15:21]What's next? Are they going to remake Rear Window? Are they going to remake Vertigo, which Downey's been trying to do? I do not like the news of The Birds getting reimagined. Again, look at this weekend, guys. Does it look like people want more remakes and IP milking? Mhm.

[00:15:37]Does it look Does it look like that?

[00:15:38]Also, can The Birds even really work in a contemporary setting?

[00:15:42]>> I don't know.

[00:15:43]>> Without I mean >> Sure, just I mean, it's just a it's a movie movie monster. A giant Yeah, but will people even want to see something like that?

[00:15:49]>> I think that, you know, there's something there, but it's a remake and it's IP milk and it's we're going to redo the whole thing because it's easy and blah blah blah blah blah blah, but, you know, we also have Evil Dead Rise that just wrapped filming directed by Francis Galluppi. He did The Last Stop in Yuma County in theaters April 7th, 2028. Back-to-back years of Evil Dead films.

[00:16:09]>> And then Minecraft 2 dropped its first looks at Kirsten Dunst, Matt Berry, and Jack Black in the new film, which hits theaters next summer, July 23rd.

[00:16:19]>> They're moving fast on that one.

[00:16:21]>> I mean, what do you make a billion?

[00:16:22]>> Two billion or 1.3 billion?

[00:16:24]>> Something stupid. It made a ton of money. I Dude, whenever I'm out, I see kids wearing Minecraft shirts.

[00:16:28]>> Do you really?

[00:16:29]>> It's like they're they're I see it everywhere.

[00:16:31]>> I don't really see Minecraft stuff that often, to be >> Oh, yeah, they're I see at the airport I saw a bunch of kids just wearing mine I saw a kid playing Minecraft and he had a Minecraft T-shirt on.

[00:16:39]>> [laughter] >> And it was like we were we were walking through the tunnel into the plane and the mom was just like this kid was just like, you know, mindlessly on his giant iPad.

[00:16:48]>> And mindlessly on his giant iPad.

[00:16:51]>> what happened was there was a crew member with a empty um wheelchair that they had helped a disabled person onto the plane and he and we were all on the right, but the kid was on the left and the guy was approaching and I was like, "Hey, watch out." cuz like the mom didn't care and the kid was just like >> Didn't even realize it. He was just like, "As long as he's being quiet."

[00:17:10]>> Didn't realize there was a person approaching him cuz he's just like I was like, "Come on, guys. He's in danger.

[00:17:14]He's like going to get hit by a wheelchair."

[00:17:17]Anyways, jeez, Louise. It's her It's her kids, not my kids.

[00:17:20]>> [laughter] >> Let's talk Let's talk about the Odyssey some more.

[00:17:23]Um some really cool news.

[00:17:25]Obviously, the marketing for this movie I think is going to really start ramping up at the end of June leading to its July 17th release.

[00:17:33]So, Universal Studios Hollywood is featuring Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey in its mega movie summer event, which will be happening in July.

[00:17:43]A life-sized Trojan ship used in filming is getting added to the studio tour. I've actually seen it. You can see it from the parking lot structure. If you park at Universal, I think it's like I was at AT or Jurassic Park lot. Like if you go up like six levels, you can see throughout the park and throughout the studio tour.

[00:18:01]I saw one of the ships and I was I'm assuming they're adding it to the tour cuz it's like right next to the War of the Worlds downed plane, but it's like behind a bunch of walls secretly.

[00:18:10]Um so I actually saw I saw it from 400 ft away, but also the 30-ft tall Trojan horse from the film will be on display in CityWalk in front of the AMC beginning July.

[00:18:24]>> Oh my god.

[00:18:25]>> How cool is that going to be?

[00:18:26]>> That's great. And there's also there's so much space in that area. So, it's going to be like dude, crowds of people will be able to like it's a perfect place to put it.

[00:18:33]>> It's genius marketing. I was at I did an F1 event at that theater like three or four weeks ago and they had three F1 cars, three Ferraris. And it was really cool out front of the AMC CityWalk.

[00:18:44]Because there's a like you said, there's a ton of space. It's like a little plaza. It's the center of CityWalk. And to put a 34-ft tall Trojan horse there, what the [ __ ] >> It's crazy.

[00:18:55]>> to be insane.

[00:18:56]>> Are you I'm so sick of all these people these guys on YouTube that are making like like horrible speculation videos about The Odyssey and being completely wrong about the castings.

[00:19:06]>> Oh, it's just That's just their thing.

[00:19:08]>> It's It's It's called mean, hey. You know, I'm not going to fault someone for making a buck, but that's outrage fuel.

[00:19:17]>> literally tabloids. The tabloids of YouTube.

[00:19:19]>> yeah, those those accounts, you know, a lot of those YouTubers, I'm I'm sure you all know who we're talking about, they're just outrage feeds. That That they know what works. They know the algorithm. They know people love outrage, and I think they purposefully talk so much [ __ ] and criticize films to get the views. And they get a lot of views, so like they're going to keep doing it.

[00:19:37]>> not even right about what they're saying.

[00:19:39]>> Oh, absolutely not.

[00:19:40]>> Like they're not even They're completely incorrect about the castings they're complaining about and things like that.

[00:19:44]It's insane. It's just It's >> their It's their hustle.

[00:19:46]>> Yeah, all they do is [ __ ] about Disney stuff.

[00:19:48]>> And people are addicted to it. And they Oh, I'm going to keep watching these videos. Like the thumbnails are just so outrageous, too, where it's like, all right, guys, like chill out. It's just a movie.

[00:19:57]>> one where it was like Elliot Page's face photoshopped on Achilles, like Brad Pitt's Achilles. And it's like, that's not who they're playing.

[00:20:03]>> Yeah, but it's clickbait. It's clickbait. It's outrage bait. Those are the the toxic accounts that I can't stand, honestly, because they're They're just fueling hate for views and money.

[00:20:12]They're making They're all the It's all they care about is money.

[00:20:16]If I think if they actually had objective opinions, they'd probably like like life a little more.

[00:20:20]And they'd they'd get way less views.

[00:20:22]>> Yeah, exactly. Yeah, exactly. We don't get their views cuz we're not insane.

[00:20:26]>> [laughter] >> All right, Terrifier.

[00:20:29]The creator, Damien Leone, is sign has signed on to write and direct a new original horror film for Lionsgate called Tortures of the Damned. Sam Raimi set to produce. I love the title. Let's go. That's pretty cool.

[00:20:40]>> It's probably going to be It's going to be insane, I bet.

[00:20:41]>> Sounds like a a horror movie from the '80s, man, with that title. Tortures of the Damned. Let's go.

[00:20:47]Hopefully, he makes it a little more digestible, though.

[00:20:50]>> A little bit easier to watch?

[00:20:51]>> more digestible for the average movie consumer, so I can actually sit in the theater and watch it with you know, I maybe I can have some popcorn and not think I'm going to puke. House of the Dragon final trailer dropped for season 3. Release Three. Three.

[00:21:05]>> [laughter] >> Three. Drops in 3 weeks on HBO Max.

[00:21:08]>> Does it? Oh my god.

[00:21:10]>> June 21st.

[00:21:11]>> good.

[00:21:11]>> I mean it looks stellar, but ain't going to be no Knight of the Seven Kingdoms of [ __ ] That's what I'm saying.

[00:21:17]>> Also, new looks at The End of Oak Street, the new dinosaur film starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor. And this looks like a fun movie. It comes out later this in the late summer. We finally got a look at a dinosaur chasing them. It's going to be I think this could be a really special movie.

[00:21:32]If the score If the script's good, I think it'll be outstanding because like we always talk about Jurassic has such a grip on the dino genre, a monopoly. They really do. 65 tried to do it, but that story was just not there. If they had a better story, I think that movie could have really pulled off something fun, but it just was a nothing burger at the end of the day for me. But The End of Oak Street really great filmmaker here with David Robert Mitchell from It Follows, writer-director of that film.

[00:21:59]I think it's really cool. You know, this family, they discover their movies their their neighborhoods basically just been sent to a different time period to the prehistoric era. Like the entire neighborhood's been cut and taken and sent back in time. This is a fun concept for a movie because how do you do dinosaurs these days? And you want to do it you have to do it contemporary with humans most likely. So how do you bring humans to dinosaurs instead of bringing dinosaurs to humans like Jurassic's always done? Bring humans there in a fun way, an interesting way, and see what happens. Like T-Rexes chasing people in neighborhoods. It's so It's so fun.

[00:22:35]Sounds great. I think it looks fantastic.

[00:22:38]>> Huge news in the gaming world.

[00:22:40]007 First Light has already sold 1.5 million copies in its first hour 24 hours of release. It is getting rave reviews from critics and fans. People keep DMing us saying to get it to play it cuz it's fantastic.

[00:22:55]>> right now, but it does look like a lot of fun, guys. And we want to talk about it cuz it's a James Bond game. And I mean that's pretty That's a pretty freaking cool. If I had a console, I'd maybe play it.

[00:23:02]>> That's pretty pretty cool. So, we have some news on 28 Years Later three.

[00:23:10]>> The third one.

[00:23:11]>> The third film. It's going to film next year now. It's officially getting green-lit.

[00:23:15]Um Danny Boyle, the Oscar-winning filmmaker, chatted about it.

[00:23:20]And he said, to quote, "Instead of filming it back-to-back, that he literally ran out of time with the location. We ran out of time because it's set in an area of Britain where you can only film at certain times of the year, probably because of the weather.

[00:23:33]We ran out of time this year. We literally ran out of time." He keeps saying he ran out of time. So, it'll be, hopefully, fingers crossed, next year.

[00:23:38]>> I think he ran [laughter] out of time.

[00:23:39]>> But there's the enthusiasm there, and Alex Garland has done a wonderful script for it.

[00:23:44]>> All right. Yeah, I hope you just Yeah, finish the trilogy. Let's go. Uh >> Yeah, apparently though, Danny Boyle ran out of time.

[00:23:49]>> [laughter] >> I'm getting word he ran out of time.

[00:23:51]>> [gasps] >> I was not expecting reading that quote for it to say five times. But they um Yeah, they shoot in a place that uh the it's like the water rises too high or something with the the island.

[00:24:02]>> Mhm.

[00:24:02]>> I think that's what it is. All right, we got an interesting trailer for In the Hand of Dante.

[00:24:07]>> What an interesting cast.

[00:24:09]>> Yeah. So, starring Oscar Isaac, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Gerard Butler, Al Pacino, John Malkovich, and Martin Scorsese himself. It follows contemporary [clears throat] and past storylines. It follows a modern scholar who steals a valuable manuscript, the original writing of Dante, uh to find the New York Mafia. And this guy has a connection to the the material.

[00:24:32]And at the same time, it looks like Oscar Isaac will be playing Dante as he's writing the story.

[00:24:38]>> It's such a random mashup of cast. It makes it feel like it was a fantasy draft. And they're like, "I can get them. I can get Gal Gadot. I Oh, fine.

[00:25:12]Let's talk about Rambo the prequel movie official release date June 4th, 2027. So basically a year from a couple days from now. Noah Centineo, David Harbour, and James Franco are starring this film directed by Jalmari Helander who did Sisu.

[00:25:27]You know it's going to be a ton of action in that really cool action movie.

[00:25:29]>> All right, final bit of news. Florence Pugh has a a film in development and they pitched it at the Canne Film Market and Paramount won a bid uh securing the rights for $30 million the biggest one of the biggest purchases ever at Canne.

[00:25:44]Um and Studio Canal will help distribute the film. This is an adaptation of a book by Matt Haig.

[00:25:50]It's called The Midnight Library and centers on a a woman named Nora who finds herself in a magical library between life and death filled with books that offer her to see the many outcomes of lives not lived. And she's also slated to produce the film as well as play the lead character.

[00:26:05]>> Huge huge purchase.

[00:26:07]>> It's a big purchase. Is that all Is that Is that the budget as well?

[00:26:11]Or is that just purchase for the rights?

[00:26:13]>> just purchase rights.

[00:26:14]>> been made. So >> No, I know it's not been made but it's like to give the budget as well.

[00:26:18]>> I think um maybe maybe >> That's my guess is it's a $30 million purchase.

[00:26:23]>> it but that's >> Yeah, yeah.

[00:26:25]>> That's how it is.

[00:26:25]>> That includes the budget of the film. So yeah, they're like the team now has $30 million to to make >> Cuz they don't have anything to sell.

[00:26:32]It's like yeah, you can Here's $30 million go make the movie and fund yourself. So I'm assuming it's the budget of the >> that's a massive purchase.

[00:26:38]>> It's massive.

[00:26:39]>> Pretty pretty big.

[00:26:40]>> people don't know that's another reason for film festivals is they're like a business selling market.

[00:26:44]>> Yeah, film market. Yeah, that's that's one of the the main functions of film festivals besides playing movies and giving out awards. But we're done with movie news now, guys.
