Added:Why is the math book sad?
Because it has a lot of problems.
>> [laughter] [clears throat] >> Not funny?
Why is this joke so funny?
Or maybe not. Because of the word problem. You see, the word problem has two meanings. One of them is having a problem in your life, something that you cannot solve. And one of them is a math problem. In this joke, we're saying that the math book is sad because it has too many problems. Problems in life or math problems? This in English is called a pun. A pun is a funny use of a word or a phrase that has several meanings. And in this lesson, I have five jokes for you.
We're going to see why these jokes are funny, and then I will explain the two meanings of the word that has made the joke funny. Are you ready? Let's begin.
The past, the present, and the future walked into a bar.
It was tense.
Okay.
Tense has two meanings. One of the meanings as an adjective is not relaxed, with tension. So, the bar was tense means the bar had an atmosphere full of tension. The other meaning of tense is grammar tense, past, present, and future. They are tenses. So, when past, present, and future walk into a bar, it is tense.
Not funny?
I think it was funny.
>> Not bad. Not bad.
>> [clears throat and cough] >> Okay, next one.
My wife told me to stop impersonating a flamingo.
I had to put my foot down.
>> [sighs] >> That was funny.
You know, flamingos stand on one foot, right? And my wife told me to stop impersonating one.
So, I had to put my foot down.
But, to put your foot down has another meaning. To put your foot down means to be firm and to assert yourself. So, with one meaning, it sounds as if the guy has put his foot literally down and is now standing on two feet. But, the second meaning is the guy said, "No, I won't impersonate a flamingo." He put his foot down. How was it? You're laughing, aren't you? You're at least smiling.
>> Hell no.
>> If you're not smiling, answer this question. Why did the picture go to jail?
Because it was framed.
You know that. Why is it funny? Look at the word framed. You know, a picture frame is what you put the picture inside. And usually, all pictures or most pictures on the wall are framed, which means they are inside a frame.
But, also in English, to be framed means somebody set you up and you go to jail and you are a criminal for a crime you did not commit. So, why did the picture go to jail? Because it was framed. That was funny. Come on. You know, that's why they call me the funniest teacher on YouTube.
>> Nobody calls me that.
>> I used to hate facial hair.
But, but then it grew on me.
>> [cough and clears throat] >> Okay. You know that facial hair grows.
It grew on me means my facial hair just grew, right? Grew on me. But, also, if something grows on you as an idiom, it means you slowly become interested in it.
So, I used to hate facial hair, but then it grew on me, which means either it really literally grew on me, or that it grew on me, meaning I became interested in having facial hair. You know, the thing is, when you explain a joke, it stops being funny.
But without explaining it, this joke is hilarious. Okay, getting to the last joke, my favorite one.
Oh, by the way, in the middle of all the funny jokes, if you want to join my English mini course for free, scan the QR code or click on this link, go on my website, and learn more about it. You can now register for free. Okay, back to the joke, and this is my favorite one.
>> [clears throat] >> I told my doctor I broke my arm in two places.
He told me to stop going to those two places.
>> [laughter] >> Oh my god, this is a good joke. This is a good joke. This is a great joke.
>> Okay.
>> It's funny, come on. You know, the funny thing about this joke is the meaning of the word place, because place can refer to a physical place somewhere, or to a place on your bones or on your body. So, I told the doctor that I broke my arm in two places, one here and one here, but the other meaning of the word place is a location, so the doctor told me not to go to those places.
Um >> [clears throat] >> Oh my god.
