Highway 1 has undergone significant changes over time, with many roadside businesses closing or transforming, while the natural coastal views remain unchanged; this reflects broader patterns of economic and regulatory shifts affecting small coastal communities.

the road trip is RUINED highway 1Added:
I'm on my way to Santa Cruz on the much anticipated video from Pacific Avenue.
And on my way on Highway One, I came across places I used to frequent like the Seabol gone.
Lots of memories here.
The sign still up.
Just looking at that signs brings so many memories from this place.
The best part, it was affordable.
Those days are gone. It's been closed for 3 years.
And that used to be the bar.
Just look at these views.
I just came from that tunnel.
Everything's sliding down the cliff.
You can tell those rocks down there.
I miss driving through here, especially at night on winter rainy days.
I couldn't go by without stopping at this old bunker. You can see it from the road and it's very easy to get to. Let's take a look.
From what I hear, some rich guy from Texas bought this land and tried to build on here, but he was stopped.
That's not erosion.
That's just digging that somebody did.
Then technically this is private property, but there's no signs or anything.
A lot of people come up here, take pictures.
They even climb that thing.
There's even a rope that goes up there.
This was another building that caught my eye. This used to be a restaurant and the sign used to be right there.
This used to be a Peruvian restaurant and now it's gone.
I like the shape of the building and the very large windows.
Let's go take a peek.
This is where the entrance used to be.
Let's see here.
Everything looks like it's kept clean.
This was the main entrance right here.
It's white out. Can't see inside.
This place here is public and it has beach access.
A rich native history.
Native Americans tell us they live in their homelands since the creator placed them here.
That was a while back.
This must have been the outdoor seating area.
Can you imagine the views they have at that house?
We have a really cool shop across the street.
And over here, looks like we have a new restaurant there.
That's really cool to see.
I haven't been out here in a minute.
Says grand opening.
Must be new.
And it's right next to the Ocean View in no vacancy.
They're all booked.
I feel sorry for the gas station owners.
There's a lot of regulations here in California and they have required all gas stations to change their underground tanks and install double layer tanks so that they don't leak. It's costing the owner a lot of time and money to have this replaced. These replacements can go up in the millions of dollars just so they can comply with the California laws. And part of that is what's making the gas so expensive out here. Look at that big crater there.
The tanks are gone. They lose money on the replacement and on all the time they have to be closed.
You can tell this place has been closed for a long time because that says $469 a gallon. It's been a long time since gas was 469.
It's way over $7 in some places around here.
And here's another restaurant. Now, this restaurant doesn't look open right now.
Maybe because it's a weekday.
Too bad they have all that outdoor seating area there.
Nobody there.
Now, this one is open. Or maybe it's not open right now.
Oh, yeah. It just closed at 6:00 p.m.
It's already 6:14.
really cool outdoor seating area as well.
But this place brings a lot of memories.
This was here for decades.
I'm sure a lot of you have seen it.
All the military supplies out here.
I wonder what happened to that guy.
It doesn't look like it's anything right now.
I don't see any signage.
Yeah, but this this is where the army surplus was.
I stopped by a few times on my way back to the city.
I think it's been closed for years now.
Houses are small, narrow streets, peaceful and quiet out here. Really relaxing. I'm liking the small town vibe out here.
It's a gallery across the street. And over here we have the post office.
The Montara post office.
Really nice to have some food right on the side of the road.
Maybe a cup of coffee. I saw the distillery sign and I had to go. A lot of history from this place.
Very secluded by the beach is the M distillery.
It's been here since 1927.
And this seclusion is what made it perfect for a speak easy back when prohibition was in effect.
Lots of stories from politicians and filmmakers from the era.
Even huntings about this place. And of course, seafood is their specialty.
I had to mention it.
I also had to stop at the Pilot Life Cafe to grab a bite. They have this outdoor patio where you can check out the active tarmac.
This is a public airport for small planes, mostly private planes.
Check out this patio.
Nobody here right now, but it's a really cool spot.
Not a lot of people know about this place. They have air shows here from time to time.
Pilot classes, emergency services.
They even have their own selfservice gas station. 675 a gallon. Looks like they didn't have to replace their tank since it's not underground.
Maybe some gas stations should do that, too. I'm sure they're not allowed to do that.
There used to be a train that will take you from San Francisco to Santa Cruz.
You could catch it from the cliff house all the way here. You can tell the railroad hasn't been in use for a while.
They stopped using it over a 100 years ago.
Mandatory stop on your way to Santa Cruz. Check out Shark Fiend Cove.
By now you can tell why they call it Sharfing Cove. It's right next to Highway One. You can't miss it.
Look at that cave.
It's like a water tunnel.
The fog gives it another look.
A mysterious pirate movie. Look.
Finally made it to Santa Cruz. Took me a long time because I was doing all those stops to show you guys around.
And I'm next to what used to be a chase bank gone.
Really large branch right here in this corner. And I think the video is getting too long. I'm going to leave it here for the next video where I'm going to walk on Pacific Avenue.
See what it's like these days. So stay tuned for the next video. Check out this car. What a classic that soon.
What a cool car. Check out this other one I found here in the city.
Islander.
Really cool.
Look at those tires.
What a treat.
And it is a Ford.
