How Luxury Hospitality Is Evolving To Blend Work, Lifestyle & Experience w/ Maria MarzulloAdded:
Welcome back beautiful New York tristate area and beyond. You're listening to a moment of Zen right here on 710 WOR, the voice of New York I Heart Radio. I'm your host Zen Sams. Welcome back to the lifestyle edit brought to you by Melia Hotels International, where luxury meets lifestyle and how we move through the world is evolving faster than ever.
Travel as we once knew it is gone. In fact, recent 2026 data shows that over 70% of travelers now blend business and leisure into a single trip and nearly 2/3 prioritize flexibility, design, and experience over traditional amenities.
So, the modern traveler isn't just checking in, they're plugging into a lifestyle. And today's conversation lives right there. We're joined by Maria Marzullo. She's a 28-year-old New York-based lifestyle and travel content creator. She's an emerging voice representing this new wave of hybrid travelers, those seamlessly blending work, content, and personal experience into one fluid journey. Through her lens, we're going to explore how travel behavior is shifting and how hospitality is being forced to evolve alongside it.
Maria, welcome to the show, superstar.
I'm so excited to be here. Thank you so much for having me. I'm so excited to chat with you. So, I've been stalking your social media page. I see where you travel. I see how you travel. I see the amount of intent you put in each one of your posts and it's quite remarkable. I mean, we're seeing a massive behavioral shift. You know this better than anyone else, where trip where trips are no longer categorized as business or leisure, but more like a blend of both, often layered with content creation and personal intention. So, Maria, when you look at how you travel today, how would you define your own behavior as a hybrid traveler? And what are the non-negotiables that now shape every trip you take?
Yeah, well, being that I just got back from a trip yesterday internationally. I was just in Portugal.
Um I can very much so attest to all of what you're saying.
Um definitely a hybrid traveler. You know, most of my trips blend content creation, exploration, and work responsibilities um all in one, especially when my husband travels with me as well.
Um I'm a full-time content creator. He works in finance. Um so we like to you know, we're rarely we're rarely staying or we're rarely traveling for just like one reason. So spaces that can adapt with me throughout the day um truly are super important. So my non-negotiables are definitely location number one, always. Um design and and flexibility. You know, I want to be somewhere that feels connected to the destination, but also functions as a space where I can create, reset, and at the end of the day come back and recharge. So I'm drawn to hotels that like balance that lifestyle where you can like seamlessly move between work and leisure um without it feeling forced. Uh and I think Melia does really well with its mix of city and resort experiences. Yeah, Melia does do a great, great job at that. And it's a it's a powerful reframe, what you just said, because it really highlights how intentional travel has become. I mean, it's no longer just passive. It's curated, almost like you're designing an experience around your life, not escaping from it.
Exactly. And you And you want to be somewhere and stay somewhere that feels at home to you, but also a place that feels a part of the destination you're traveling to. Yeah, you said it. So let's chat about exactly that, the death of traditional hotel stays. So I was researching um this last night. With this shift that we're seeing, the role of hotels is being completely redefined, right? What used to be a one to sleep is now, to your point expected to function as a workspace, a creative environment, a wellness hub, like all in one. So, from your experience, Maria, how has your expectation of a hotel evolved beyond just a place to stay? And what separates a static property from one that actually adapts to your lifestyle in real time?
Yeah.
So, like you said, they're not just where I stay. Um it's a part of the story I'm telling. So, I look for space spaces that feel intentional um through design, natural light, good energy, and a strong sense of place. Um and what really stands out is when a hotel feels personalized, whether that's through curated experiences, local recommendations. Um and for me, being a content creator always on my phone, technology makes the stay more seamless as well.
And something that Melia does especially well with their app, uh being able to manage so much of the experience in one place, from checking in ahead of time to accessing your room digitally or booking experiences, um makes everything feel more intuitive and effortless, especially when I'm balancing multiple things while while traveling. I can be doing one thing while planning for the next. Um at the same time, I really value the human side of hospitality. Um so, it's about that balance where technology enhances the experience but without taking away from it. Um and that's what makes the property feel like it's truly adapting to my lifestyle rather than the other way around. Well, you're right. And that distinction, I mean, between static and adaptive is what you're describing is everything because it's not just about design anymore, to your point. It's about responsiveness, almost like the space is anticipating your needs before you even ask. And that's important. It's important. Um are there any favorite Melia properties that you would like to highlight?
Yes. Um one of them is a Melia hotel in Milan. It's more of a bustling city, but when you go to this hotel, you kind of feel a sense of peace and leisure while you're there. And then Punta Cana Melia International was so lovely. Getting off the plane, they provide you with like a luxury transfer, and the properties themselves are just beautiful. I mean, curated and clean, and really just speak to where you're staying. So, like the Melia Milan was a gorgeous resort, but it didn't have like a pool or anything um because like you are in a city and you kind of it creates that that vibe versus Punta Cana, there's a beach, there's multiple pools, there's so many things that that it offers. Um yeah, so those are those are two that I love.
Well, I I think that you're spot on with those two very two extremes, but you touched on something I want to go back that's extremely important, right?
I want you you mentioned the app, but what you're really saying is ease as the new luxury, right? So, we're also seeing the shift where luxury isn't defined by access, it's defined by ease, something that makes it easy. So, the frictionless check-ins, the intuitive layouts, uh the seamless service, it's about how effortlessly your experience flows. What does ease look like for you in a hotel experience, and where do you think most properties are still falling short when it comes to delivering that level of intuitive service?
Yeah, so I briefly just touched on this, but ease for me is like you said when everything just flows from booking to check-in to the actual stay, it should feel super seamless. So, two pain points that Melia tackles uh when traveling especially internationally is, like I said, the luxury transfer, so you don't have to worry about transportation, where to go, how to get this transportation to the hotel, and again telling the driver where to go. Um and also when your flight gets in early, this has happened to me so many times uh when your flight gets in early in the morning and your room isn't ready, uh super I don't want to say annoying, but >> It's annoying. Yeah.
We can say it's annoying. But, MEliá, I remember at the MEliá in Milan, we were able to store our luggage, freshen up, and grab refreshments um before hitting the town, and it made our travel experience so much better.
Um it's just being able to arrive somewhere and like immediately feel settled, like the space was designed with travelers in mind. So, >> [snorts] >> yeah, some properties that get the aesthetic right um but miss the functionality or vice versa. Um the best experiences are are when both come together. So, something MEliá emphasizes through or thoroughly is the balance of the design service and the consistency.
Yeah. Yeah, you're right. And that's such an important call out because true luxury today, well, it's invisible. It's It's when it's done right. You don't even notice it. You just feel taken care of. Mhm.
So, let's chat about blurring business and leisure because like you said, you know, you're traveling and sometimes there's personal moments involved, but whether it's you or your husband, um I'm sure his work is very intense, and so is yours. So, blending the blending of worlds, so work, life, and travel, it's not It's not occasional anymore. It's the norm. People are extending trips and working remotely and building entire routines on the road.
How often are your trips now serving multiple purposes at once, and how has that shift changed the way you choose where you stay and how long you stay there?
Right.
Um loaded question.
>> [laughter] >> Um being a full-time content creator, it is such a luxury, and I'm so grateful to be able to have both um work and leisure when I go to these amazing destinations.
Um and now almost all of my trips serve multiple purposes. Uh I might be traveling for content, but I'm also exploring, shooting, and sometimes even working remotely while I'm there. And because of that, I tend to choose like destinations where I can stay longer and really settle in rather than quick trips. Um I'm drawn to places that offer both good energy, relaxation, cities where I can create, but also unwind. And that's why I really appreciate hotel brands that understand this shift towards the leisure travel um and create spaces that support both sides of that experience. Um Like my husband and I's work are they take time. So, to to be able to be in a hotel and in a space where, you know, you can get coffee and food while being on your laptop and also just like enjoying the ambiance of where you are is kind of, you know, perfection.
Um I always say to my husband, I would love to travel and create content forever. I mean, travel is one of the most beautiful things we we have in this life. Oh, you're you're you're 100% right. It's almost like travel has become an extension of daily life for you, not a break from it. And I think that that changes everything about how we value time and space and experience.
So, you're living your best life and you're stay blessed, my dear. Stay blessed.
>> Exactly. Thank you. And now I want to chat about authenticity and the local immersion because as you said at the beginning, you know, you want to feel integrated in the culture. So, another major shift to your point that we're seeing, especially with millennial and next-gen travelers, is the move away from surface-level luxury towards something more meaningful, more connected to a place and culture. So, for you, what makes a hotel feel truly connected to its destination? And how important is that sense of local immersion when you're deciding where to book?
You know, I think you decide where to book because of that. Um connection to the destination is everything for me. I don't want a hotel that could exist anywhere. I want it to feel rooted in where I am. So, that can come through design, local partnerships like with food, um and even the energy of the space.
Uh hotels incorporate I love when hotels incorporate local culture in a way uh that feels elevated, but still authentic. And Meliá's approach to creating properties that reflect their surroundings, whether it's through architecture, experiences, cultural programming, it's it's something that really resonates with how um I choose where to stay. And an example is when I was at the Paradisus Cancún Meliá, they have all these different restaurants, and all these different restaurants have ethnic food from the destination, as well as these amazing chefs. Yeah, you said it. It's the emotional connection. What you're describing is the emotional connection.
It's what people remember, not just where they stayed, but how that place made them feel, and how deeply it tied them into the destination. So, I feel the same grounded rootedness when I travel with intent and choose places that are culturally meaningful to your point. Now, let's chat about where hospitality is headed. So, as we zoom out, what's so interesting to me is how brands like Meliá are evolving within the space, not not forcing the narrative, but adapting to it. So, when you look ahead, Maria, what do you think the next generation of hospitality needs to get right to truly serve travelers like you? And where do you see brands like Meliá fitting into that evolution?
You know, I think the keyword next generation is crucial to explaining this um because there's so many generations of individuals' lives. Um so, they I know Meliá has hotels for adults only, children, you know, there's some hotels with slides. Um so, it really caters to every generation um in that sense of the word, but the next generation of hospitality, it needs to focus on flexibility, you know, personalization and experience-driven stays. So, travelers today want spaces that adapt to them, not the other way around, and that means blending work and leisure seamlessly while offering those curated local experiences and using technology, like I said before, in a way that enhances the stay. So, I also, you know, think loyalty is evolving into something much more than experience-driven.
Programs like Meliá Rewards are a great example of this. Um it's not a just about the points that you collect, but creating a more personalized and seamless experience over time, um where your preferences, habits, and and your travel style are actually reflected in each stay. So, Meliá Rewards is such a good way to weave into the next generation of hospitality, and you know, I see Meliá Hotel Hotels International fitting into that future really naturally. Their focus on innovation, the local connection, um and balancing lifestyle really aligns with how people are actually traveling now. So, it feels less transactional and more like an evolving relationship between the traveler and the brand.
And and I just love that no matter the trip, Meliá Hotels are everywhere, so you can always rely on them. It's like being a part of a private club, but in fact, it's available to everyone. I love that, being part of a private club.
Yeah, and that's the future that's the future right there. I mean, Yeah. what you're describing is hospitality that moves with the traveler, not around them. Something that is fluid and intuitive and deeply aligned with how we actually live today is what you're describing. I love it. Well, Maria, this is this was such a sharp insightful conversation. I mean, it really reframed travel not as an escape, but as an extension of who we are and how we live.
