That was a valid educational goal for most of the last century. But here is the shift that's already happened. AI can now execute any standard mathematical procedure faster and more accurately than any human, which means the value of a human who can follow procedure has dropped towards zero. The value that remains, the value that AI cannot replicate, is the human ability to understand why a method works, to recognize when a different method is needed, to reason through a problem that has no established procedure yet. So, what should replace procedural drilling?

Programs that ask children not just to execute a method, but to explain it, challenge it, and apply it to situations they have never seen. The goal shifts from can you perform this correctly to do you understand this deeply enough to use it creatively? The families who understand it now are giving their children a compounding advantage because you can always teach a child a procedure. Teaching them to think takes a lot longer and cannot wait.
