Men's mental health awareness month highlights how societal conditioning that teaches boys to be strong and not cry creates barriers to men seeking help for mental health struggles. According to WHO, approximately one in ten men suffers from depression, yet many men feel misunderstood, lonely, and unable to express vulnerability due to fear of being perceived as weak. This cultural expectation leads men to suffer in silence, often developing unhealthy coping mechanisms. Safe spaces where men can be listened to, held accountable, and feel they belong are essential for addressing this silent crisis.

And because of that a lot of men are suffering in silence. Men are facing struggles silently. Men are not reaching out for help. And tonight we'll be exploring avenues where men can find safe spaces to talk and open up and indeed beat whatever challenges they're facing.
>> Very key issues that we'll get into later on. Right. Uh so yes, looking forward to that. But my name is Emanuel Dongo. In the sports news, we have Davis Cup tennis which is taking place here in Kenya. Mixed results for the team Kenya that we'll go into a little bit later.
And of course, we have some World Cup action. At 10:00, we have the United States going against Australia. And we also have more from yesterday's fixtures as well.

Police say they have begun investigations into the incident.

President William R has directed the National Police Service to take decisive action against goons calling for a thorough crackdown on criminal gangs and those accused of financing them. In his apparent response to last Friday's attack on the All Saints Cathedral, uh President R told police to tackle goons and hold those financing them accountable. Elsewhere, the National Police Service says three suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack on Chamele Academy on Thursday.
>> President William R has for the first time broken his silence on the subject of goons a week after the shocking invasion of All Saints Cathedral during a public participation exercise on the finance bill. The president who had been on a whirlwind international tour addressed the issue while attending the funeral service of Zapora Kuskege, wife of former tenderate member of parliament Henrik Kuskege in Nandi County on Friday. President R directed the police to take action on goons telling officers to quote cane those involved.
bankrupt.
So police aside from his order for corporal punishment, President R also called for a crackdown on the financiers.
Yes.
Why? Interior cabinet secretary said action against goons has already yielded positive results in will be replicated across the country.
all that kind of thing.
>> Blaming the political class for creating a monster.
>> The problem we have with goons is not the people. It's not the young people.
It is eron or wayward political leaders about they go deliberately recruit because they don't have alternative political policies.

Speaking at different events in Nandi and Nairobi counties, President R also claimed a section of the opposition was planning to sponsor the demos. As Emanuel Tor now reports, the president lorded MPs who passed the finance bill 2026 on Thursday, calling them heroes.
>> Less than a week to the June 25th Gen Z protest anniversary, President William R is firing warning shots against those he says are planning to participate in violent protests against the government.
The president who attended the burial of Zapora Kos Gay, wife of former cabinet minister and former Tinder MP Henrik Gay in Kip Coror Nandi Hills constituency Nandi County Friday said the government will deal firmly with violent protesters.
The president extending his warning to those he labeled as financiers of the chaotic protests.

>> President hipping praises on the 122 members of parliament passed the finance bill 2026.
History will record that when a time was required to stand for country, you were there. The head of state training his guns on opposition leaders, trashing their track record.
Anything my friend, you don't know who you are DEALING WITH.

Mothers and relatives of the youth who were killed during the Gen Z demos in 2024 and 2025 marched to Inspector General of Police Douglas Ka's office on Thursday to demand justice for their children. Emmanuel to Citizen TV.
>> Right. And victims of anti-government protests have welcomed the two billion shillings compensation package, saying it will help cover medical bills, support families, and ease the financial burden on those who lost their livelihoods. But even as they praise the move, survivors and berieved families insist that justice must accompany compensation with those responsible for the abuses held to account. They say no amount of money can replace lost lives or heal the deep physical and emotional wounds left by the violence. But the payouts offer a chance to rebuild shattered lives. Citizen TV's Ben Kiry reports.
Taking even a few steps remains a painful struggle for Charlesbo.
Nearly a year after he was shot in the leg during last year's Saba Saba protest, the bullet wound nearly cost him his leg. But doctors at Kenyat National Hospital managed to save the limb, sparing him an amputation. Since then, Charles has spent most of his days confined to his rented home in Luangong.
The tailoring work that once enabled him to support his family of four is now beyond his reach, leaving him without a source of income and struggling to make ends meet.
The result of the gunshot wound has been a life marked by immense hardship for both a child and his family. With his wife now the sole bread winner, meeting household expenses, paying school fees, and covering other essential needs has become an uphill struggle due to the family's limited income.
Actually, >> the recommendations by the experts committee on compensation for protest victims have been met with cautious optimism. For Charles, the proposed payout cannot undo the damage caused by the gunshot or restore the life he once knew. But it offers a glimmer of hope, a chance to rebuild, support his family, and regain a measure of stability after months of hardship.
Yeah, at least balance my sh will be okay.
>> Other victims suffered lifealtering injuries, including the amputation of limbs, fundamentally changing the course of their lives. Many others lost their lives, leaving behind grieving families and wounds that may never fully heal.
street the people that I can mention with their names and their parents around 40 40 45 amputes around five.
>> The panel of experts on compensation for victims of protest related violence recommended a 2 billion shillings compensation package for families and individuals affected between 2013 and 2016. Under the proposal, families of those who died will receive 3 million shillings each. While victims who sustain severe injuries will be awarded 1 million shillings. Survivors of sexual violence will also receive 1 million shillings. While victims with minor injuries will receive a 50,000 Kenya shillings. Hospital bills will be covered up to a maximum of 100,000 Kenya shillings each. And those who lost the property would receive a 50,000 Kenya shillings. Ben Kiri Citizen TV Nairobi.
Now teachers across the country are unhappy with an increment of their pay as you earn without proper communication from their employer, the teacher service commission. In their June's pay slips, a majority of teachers were deducted approximately 108 shillings more on income tax, which according to union officials would translate to an aggregate of up to 32.4 4 million shillings in one month if affected on the pay slips of all the 300,000 teachers employed by the TSC. The teachers are demanding clarification on the new deduction from TSC and it comes amidst calls for improved pay for educators against pressures from the high cost of living. Surfin Aang looks at those concerns.
Teacher Juma, not his real name, is among thousands of teachers across the country who are lamenting an increment in pay as you earn deductions on their June pay slips without an explanation from their employer, the teacher service commission.
>> Before the current increment on our pay, we were paying we were being deducted 8,687.
Now it's about 8,74.
The puzzling deductions, he says, adds onto the agony of teachers, a majority of whom are grappling with low pay despite the rising cost of living.
>> Added tax on our face will [ __ ] us more further financially. We are taking peanuts home and you know as teachers or as teachers we are not happy about it.
>> Citizen television obtained pay slips from several teachers indicating the payee increment. This teacher for instance used to pay 10,334 shillings as income tax but the June deductions rose to 10,442 shillings. While another teacher in Kisumu who used to pay 18,279 shillings was pain to notice that his deduction increased to 18,387 an upward adjustment of about 108 shillings which according to union officials would translate to an aggregate deduction of as high as 32.4 4 million shillings for just one month if it was affected on the pay slips of the over 300,000 teachers employed by TSC.
>> Others are even above that depending on the teachers grades and the teachers have raised a concern that why is there this raise despite the fact that there is no salary increment in their pay slip. The concerns coming just a day after the teachers unions and TSC signed the 2026 career progression guidelines that seek to streamline and hasten the process of promotion of teachers. The teachers are also expecting full implementation of phase two of the 2025 2029 collective bargaining agreement that promised among other things salary adjustments. This is after TSC confirmed that it had secured 8.4 4 billion shillings of the required 16 billion shillings to begin the implementation from 1st July 2026.
If there was a change at the end of July, we would really understand after they have gotten their second phase of the collective bargaining agreement 2025 2029. But as at now it is alarming to see that there is an increase in the deduction yet there is no minus that has been added to their pay.
>> TSC is yet to shed light on the genesis of the June deductions.
>> No deduction should be done in the teachers pay le without them knowing exactly what the deduction is all about and if it is an erroneous deduction then it should be refunded back to the teachers. Safina Cheng, Citizen TV.
>> On the crime scene, detectives from Kasarani police station are pursuing the employer of 35year-old Nani Susan Wanjikuyamura, who was brutally murdered just 2 days after securing a job in the Siero area of Casarani. Susan is believed to have been killed between the 11th of May and 12th, but her family only learned of her death yesterday after police officers from the DCI's fingerprint department at City Morty contacted them to identify her body. As Odia Francis reports, the prime suspect remains at large even as a postmortem examination confirms that Susan died from severe blunt force trauma to the head.
The family of Susan Wanji Konamura gathered at city moin grave coming face to face with the painful reality of her death nearly a month after she vanished.
Detectives were able to establish her identity through fingerprints records leading to the heartbreaking discovery that her body had been lying unclaimed at the Nairobi funeral home for weeks.
Susan's lifeless body was discovered on May 12th, 2026 at the entrance of her employer's residence.
Inside the apartment where she had lived for only two days, investigators encountered a disturbing scene.
A solitary photograph marked by a red stain on the lips stood out among the evidence while the house appeared deserted with clothes strewn across the floor. The state of the residence painted a troubling picture of disorder and raised further questions about the circumstances surrounding her death.
Neighbors say that on the day Susan was killed, the suspect asked one of them to look after her child before mysteriously disappearing.
So all of a sudden, Detectives say the suspect's phone was last traced to Mueni County. Witnesses believe she is using disguises, including hijabs, to avoid recognition and evade arrest.
This lady is not the first time. No, she's not the first.
As detectives intensify the manhand, Suzanne's family is left demanding justice.

The family of 14-year-old Randy Madena is demanding answers, rejecting the school's account that he jumped and died instantly. They're calling for a thorough and independent investigation as questions mount over the circumstances surrounding his death.

The family says the school's explanation remains unconvincing, questioning how their son could have died barely an hour after arriving at school on Friday morning in good health. Tonight, we ask the men in our lives one simple question. How are you really doing? And as we mark men's mental health awareness month and head into Father's Day, we're joined by Gabriel Achayo. He's a transformational coach and leadership consultant. And tonight we discuss the pressures men face and why mental well-being matters. Thank you so much for joining us.
>> Thank you, Lillian, for you.
>> Good to be here. I'm happy to be here.
Right now I want to begin with the fact that many men right from when they're growing up as you know boys are socialized to be tough that manua be strong boys don't cry. How does this socialization affect men later in life?
>> Well words are powerful and the words that people tell us. I remember growing up someone told me that nothing good will ever come out of you and that stuck with me. And so words are very powerful and I keep telling people we are a product of nature, nature and choice.
And so naturing are these environments and statements that people tell us. They later really affect they give us the lens the bias with which we see people we see life. You hear someone say I'm always like this.
>> This is how I am. And so the words we we are told they really affect us a lot when now we are at a point where we have to make choices how do I respond to this situation because that's the foundation we have and so these words that boys don't cry um man up and if taken to the extreme it's going to make it makes men really feel like they don't know what to do with some of the things that they're going through. So a man who was never emotionally supported, who was never validated as a child and now coming into manhood and and you know you know dealing with the world, dealing with a family, uh children, a spouse, co-workers, can this person ever coexist or even function well in in such an environment. I think what you need to ask yourself as a man is how well do I know myself to be able to be a positive influence in the lives of those people who are looking up to me. You might have a spouse who comes from a space where they're well taken care of, but you as a man, you just grew up and you went through the roughness of life. And so for you then to be able to be a man who can really be a positive supporter and a positive influence in this space especially when you have children in this day and age when we have children with all this awareness of what's going on about them. It confuses men who maybe you came from a background where you are you're never validated. You are never told you're good enough. And so you're out here fighting to find a place to prove to people that you are good enough. And that can be tough. So the question is how well do you know yourself and what is really the journey the growth curve for you and you have to pay the price sometimes.
>> Yeah. And you know Gabriel men are coming rather boys are coming of age beame becoming men in a society where they're expected to provide >> uh where they're expected to hassle if if things are not working out. And in this day and age, we know unemployment is a real issue. So there's that. But still the pressure on the men is there.
Now when life doesn't go according to the script um and we know that um this this this happens a lot um you know where things are just not working out, but you're still the father, you're still the provider, you're still supposed to meet the bills. What happens to this man in in such a scenario?
>> It's tough. And I've met men who find themselves in spaces where they they don't know what to do. They don't know whether to give up because they had an expectation and this expectation was never met. Society expect that when I finish school or when I do this this will happen, this will happen and this expectation was never met. So they got frustrated because unmet expectation leads to frustrations. And then when frustrations continue, you start resenting the situation. You either resent everybody around you, resent yourself, you resent everything and you just become bitter at everything. And maybe if you go past that, you define a new normal. And this new normal, if it is a negative new normal, it's going to be dangerous for those around you. Some people hopefully are able to marshall a positive new normal where you realize I got to figure out what this means for me and I got to figure out what it means to show up well because it's how you show up as a man and that's what is important. You might not be able to get everything that was expected of you. But how do you show up as a man?
>> Do you show up demoralized and blaming everybody around you? I have three boys for me and when I get home they look up to me. Oh, daddy's back. and they all run and they want to hug me and it depends when I show up. Am I going to pull them down because of the frustrations out there or am I really able to show up well for them so they can continue to look at me, daddy is back and they can come to me with their questions and with their concerns and whatever it is they want us to talk about. So what is your new normal when things don't go your way? What is the new normal that you're defining? Right?
>> And is it negative or is it toxic?
because some of us define very toxic new normals, coping mechanisms not healthy at all. So what do you do?
>> What is your new normal?
>> The WHO has clearly um told us that out of 10 men, one man is suffering from depression.
>> Um so when you look at u the the mental health conditions, the issues that men are battling silently, what would you list as some of the three perhaps that that men are really struggling with? I think from my understanding men feel misunderstood. So many men are lonely.
They feel they're alone. Nobody gets me.
And then they feel like nobody's thinking about our well-being. You're ignored. You just you're supposed to figure things out by yourself, but nobody's coming to ask you really how are you really really doing. It's easy to say and it's easy to say that statement, but a lot of men are they don't know how to hand whether to cry. They don't know what to who to talk to because you're like, if I sell this case what I'm going through, what will they think of me? And so what happens is we withdraw.
>> Yeah.
>> And lock ourselves in our own quarters and figure out how do we cope? And some of those coping mechanisms are not the best.
>> You talk about men feeling misunderstood. Could that be the reason why most of them don't ask for help?
Because women are known to openly speak about their issues. But with men, re research has shown that they struggle to ask for help. In fact, um, a daily just the other day specified that suicide rates are showing to be higher amongst men. Why are men struggling to ask for help, Gabriel?
There's something about self-preservation.
And self-preser preservation is good is a good and a bad thing. And many men struggle asking for help because they're like, what will they think of me?
They'll think I'm a loser. They think I am not good enough. And so I just struggle it out. I just sweat it out until I figure it out. And sometimes that might not really really work.
Personally, whenever I get myself to a situation where I'm struggling, should I ask for help or not? I get to ask myself three distinct questions. What am I afraid of losing? And am I afraid of losing the reputation that people think of me that oh, this guy go has it figured it together? Or what is it that I'm afraid of losing that I'm feeling like if I ask for help, I lose this?
What is it that I'm trying to hide? Am I trying to hide the fact that I don't know what's going on? And sometimes that can make me sit in my own corner here thinking nobody will understand me so I'm not going to ask for help because I'm trying to hide the fact that I don't know what's going on or what am I trying to prove? Am I trying to prove that I'm the I'm the one who knows everything else and to who am I trying to prove this to? For me those are very sobering question that I ask myself and depending on my responses to those questions I will then decide whether to proceed and ask for help rise above the situation and ask for help. And sometimes the answers for the questions might be very valid.
>> It might be because I'm afraid of losing money.
>> Yeah.
>> So for that reason I will not go out and do this situation. But if I realize the answer to these questions are stopping me from experiencing something much better >> that maybe I could be able to could be able to take me to the next level then I need to be honest with myself and say I'll rise above my self-preservation.
>> What would a safe space look like? We know that men are seeking solace in church. Um, others are seeking soloulless in pubs. Others are seeking soloulless in other homes, new homes.
>> A space where you are listened to and appreciated for who you are. You're not you're not being made to feel like you're not good enough. A space where you are embraced for who you are. And that's key because when you are embraced for who you are, you feel you belong. I belong here. I'm not out of place. And when you feel that you belong, then you can be able to engage well in that space. But when you feel like in this space, I don't think anybody cares.
Nobody sees me. I don't think I belong in this place. I'm I'm a firm believer that men need to find spaces where they hold each other accountable, >> right?
>> Where I hold I hold you accountable. You hold me accountable. I give you permission to speak into my life and you give me permission to speak into your life. Now, you can't do this with everybody. You have to maxim when things are tough at home. I can show up and tell guys, I don't even I think I'm not in a good space right now at home. And your friends will not laugh at you or make you feel like, oh man, you're you're a loser or whatever that is. But they will be able to listen to you and as a comrade be able to say, man, what can we do? M >> how can we help? Not be quick to fix you because again I don't think most men are looking to be fixed because that's really I don't know but I think men are looking for just spaces where they can feel I feel >> yes >> and I feel I belong here >> and I have a someone to hold me accountable. I got a someone to watch over my back to hold me accountable for me. Those are the spaces that would be helpful to men.
>> Gabriel Aay thank you so much for your time and for speaking life. um to the into the lives of the men watching this show this evening. We celebrate you even ahead of Father's Day and we do care.
Many thanks for being with us. Gabriel Achar, he's a transformational coach and leadership consultant. We'll be taking a break and we're back with more in just a bit. Thank you.

The 4-day forum brought together scientists, uh, policy makers, private sector players, and farmers to showcase research and technologies aimed at improving food security and farm productivity. Discussions focused on climate smart agriculture, digital farming, mechanization, biotech, and value addition with stakeholders calling for faster adoption of innovations to help farmers adapt to climate change and increase incomes.
We have we've already noted that researchers have already contacted and done an excellent job in developing innovations technologies in the different thematic areas both in terms in crops and in the livestock systems.
But the question that remains is why are these technologies in the not in the farmer fields and therefore that was the the driving force of this conference and all the scientists in Caro today led by the director general have agreed to move from the laboratory to move from the test tube and special to go to the farmer on the farms.

We are asking them to take up the issue of innovations that we have in Caro and do enough manufacturing so that we can take our products to Kenyans.
The National Treasury is planning to offer VAT exemptions for strategic public private partnership projects as it seeks to attract more private investment into infrastructure development. Speaking at the Africa Energy Forum, PPP Director General Engineer Keeda said the incentive will help lower project costs and improve returns for investors, making it easier to finance critical projects without placing additional pressure on taxpayers. Treasury is targeting private capital for power transmission and energy projects with six transmission lines covering more than 600 kilometers already being prepared for market at an estimated cost of 64.7 billion shillings.
>> This is an attempt to reduce on project cost and the criteria we're going to use one is to look at value for money assessment. If at all the project would be generating much more revenues even with the VAT then those ones may not be candidates. But if at all we need to make it affordable reduce the cost to make them affordable by so subjecting them to VAT exemption and by extension also custom duty exemption. Then they'll be subjected to those assessment and then we make a decision.
Sugar factories could soon become a source of both electricity and fuel under new government plans to expand power generation and ethanol production from sugarcane byproducts. Agriculture cabinet secretary Mutah Hikagu says the government is working on a framework that would allow millers to sell surplus electricity to the national grid while ramping up ethanol production to help cut fuel imports and strengthen energy security. The move comes as the government seeks to transform the sugar sector into a broader industrial value chain with officials reporting a 22% increase in sugar production over the past year following industry reforms.
importantly and I think this is critical is the in is the need to make uh uh sugar just one of the products that we produce from sugar cane and we have seen it here in uh in practice. One of the biggest products that we are interested in is ethanol because as you know you have seen for yourselves what has happened in the Middle East. the the the prochemical sector is being is being affected very seriously. And if we can produce sufficient ethanol in this country and we combine it with imported petrol and otherwise then we can be able to lower down the the cost of importation and save foreign exchange once again.
Kenya has renewed its push to attract manufacturing investment following the conclusion of the Africa International Construction Machinery and Industrial Expo in Nairobi. The 3-day event brought together more than 200 farms from Africa and China with government officials urging investors to tap into opportunities in manufacturing, industrial machinery, electric mobility and agricultural mechanization.
In manufacturing, our enterprises need accessible technologies for food processing, metal fabrication, packaging, electrical products, machine tools, and industrial production. Our small and mediumsiz enterprises should be able to access these machines that allow them to move from the informal and art at production into structured and competitive manufacturing.
