Huge Unexpected Expense | April–May Budget UpdateAjouté :
Hello everyone, this is Money Mom.
Welcome to the channel. Today I want to talk to you guys about our budget update and one huge, for me huge, unexpected cost that came up or repair. Let me get right into it. Okay, I told you guys for 2026 I'm reallocating our budget and I'm taking it slow, but each month I'm taking a different area of our budget and seeing how we can save money on that one item. Let me tell you what I've come up with so far. Then I'm going to tell you how much money I had left over my cash envelope system and then I'll tell you about the fun repair. Okay, first of all for the month of February and I decided I'm going to do this twice a year, we did a $300 grocery month, so we saved $200. I'm going to be doing that in February and September, which will save us $400 a year on groceries. I'm still spending right around 500 a month give or take, maybe a couple dollars more, maybe less. So anywhere from 470 to 520, right in that range is what we generally spend for groceries and I don't have a lot of food waste, which is good, okay? So that was for February.
For March, the next thing that I did for the month of March is we we didn't save money because we wanted to compare services. We got glasses online from Zenni and then my husband also got them from Target. Both excellent glasses and now it's good because he has three pair of glasses, okay? One his older ones just in case something breaks, but if we were to from now on order our glasses from Zenni, it would save us 50% from buying glasses online, which is really good if we were to go forward and do that. And so that's going to save us money. Also for the month of April I did cancel our bug service, which is going to save us 900 a year. And another thing I decided after speaking to a friend, I do get a pedicure every month cuz I'm on my feet a lot. And I would say with tip and everything and then they usually trim my nails too and just buff them. Um I usually it's around 50 I think with tip right around there. And I'm there's going to be two months I take off and I don't do that, which will be the month of November and the month of January and that will save me $100 a year, which total that is going to save me $1400 a year, which is $117 a month off our budget. So it's a beginning. Now remember, I just started this process.
I'm going to leave it as a surprise what I'm going to be doing in the month of May cuz right now it's at the end of April, but in May I've already decided something that I'm going to work on saving money on and then my next budget video I'll share that with you. So that's good news cuz already we're saving $1400 a year if I implement those changes, okay? Which I already have implemented them. So that and then I will be the month of September I'll be showing you how I save money on groceries and our meal plan and everything for that month in September cuz September will be here before you know it. Okay, cash envelope system.
Last month I came $20 short. Didn't want that to happen. This month I had $145 left over. What did I do with that money? Well, I do have my my husband has money for gas and spending cuz he's the one that drives. He's the only you know, he's the one that drives me everywhere that I need to go and if he has an errand and things like that. So he has his own little spending and gas money.
He takes care of all that. So I set that aside for him instead of me using it for something I don't need and then the $40 I set aside for my cell phone bill, okay? So that's going to go towards that and then I have $5 left over for me. Now I could have kept 145 for myself, but I thought it was a good use of money. Now, let's get to the not so great news, but this is why we have an emergency savings. I do have an air conditioning, plumbing and heating service, okay? And I had them come out and they do a check once a year on plumbing, once to check on heating, once to check on air conditioning. He went out and my air conditioner is 7 years old, okay? And he went out there and he checked on it and he said, you know, he said your and I never know how about all this stuff, your capacitor is not working at really great speed and if you don't, I don't know if he said speed, it's not working to its capacity. I'll just say that, okay? I don't know a lot about air conditioners. And um it it's, you know, you really do need to get it replaced.
And I need that air conditioner for the summer cuz it gets hot here and so I did have it replaced and that was a little over $600. I know in the comments you're going to say, well, my husband could buy the part and fix it for $10. That's fabulous. My husband and I and people I know do not know how to fix an air conditioner. I felt like I had to do it and he said I have a really good brand of air conditioner and he thinks that he well he thinks that it'll last me longer than 8 years my other brand. And so that's good. So at least it's in good condition, it's 7 years old. I'm hoping to at least get another I'd love to get another good 5, 6 years out of it. So I did get that replaced and I was able to do that. So I felt like the budget went up really well. I'm excited about reallocating and looking for ways to save and I'll be saving sharing that process with you. I'm really excited I had $145 left over. It's cuz I'm not doing any impulse buying and I'm really watching my spending and buying things only that I need, not that I want. And then um and because now I'm going to be able to make some good decisions. It's a bummer about the air conditioner, but guess what? I'd rather it happen now than the middle of August. So that's all I have to say for now. Do you want to share anything about your budget? I'd love to hear from you. I love you, appreciate you and I hope to see you on tomorrow morning's video. Bye everybody.
