Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has increased CNG prices by ₹2 per kg to ₹86 per kg, marking the second hike this month and the fifth in three weeks, which affects approximately 12 lakh CNG-powered vehicles across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and surrounding areas, including 4.7 lakh auto rickshaws, over 2 lakh taxis, and more than 10,000 buses, with the increase driven by rising gas procurement costs due to supply constraints and geopolitical factors.

Mumbai Commuters Face Fresh Fuel Burden As MGL Hikes CNG Prices For Second Time This MonthAdded:
Top of the hour, speaking of fuel price hike, now what is being reported that the price of CNG has now gone up from 84 to 86 [music] rupees per kg. Along with CNG, PNG, which is also piped natural gas, has now become even more expensive. And the price of piped natural gas has now been increased by 50 paise. That is now going to be effective. This is going to be the fifth CNG hike [music] being reported in Mumbai in the last 3 weeks as the CNG prices have now become costlier as far as in Mumbai is concerned. We are looking at rupees 2 per kg. And the fuel cost burden that has been growing on the commuters that are now going to feel the heat as the blow is now to the daily commuters and another jolt coming in for the transport agencies as the costs are likely to climb. So, this is another development with regards to fuel price hike and CNG is now costlier by 2 rupees. This is the second hike in the last 15 days that has now sparked fresh fare hike demand as well. And this latest revision is now taking the retail price of CNG from 86 rupees per kg uh right from 84 rupees per kg. So, domestic PNG car will also now cost at least 52 rupees per SCM in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and adjoining areas under the Mahanagar Gas Limited. Let's connect with Ruchita on this. So, Ruchita, another hike as far as CNG prices are concerned in Mumbai.
>> Uh well, that is right, in fact. Let me show you uh the price here. Uh it was initially 84 rupees, but now we can see it is 86 rupees per kg. And this is uh uh Thane, uh which is the uh nearest district of Mumbai. So, not just Mumbai city, but several other districts from uh Maharashtra have been affected including Navi Mumbai and rest of the areas. And that is uh not only affecting uh the common people, but it is also uh uh going to uh uh make a big challenge for the government authorities as well because there are about uh 12 lakh vehicles that run uh on CNG. it uh includes the uh 4.7 auto rickshaws, more than 2 lakhs taxis in Mumbai city. So, it is directly going to affect the commuters who rely on the auto rickshaws in Mumbai city. And apart from that, there are Ola Uber like car services which are also going to be affected. And most importantly, if you talk about Mumbai metropolitan region, there are about 2,000 government buses and more than 10,000 private buses which run on CNG. So, this is something that people are now afraid of that people were relying on CNG as it was affordable if you compare it with the other fuels, but now with the increase of 2 rupees, it is also going to affect the public transport as well as with the hike of 2 rupees, not just in Mumbai city, but we are seeing its effect in the nearest areas including Navi Mumbai, Thane, and the western the area of Maharashtra.
>> So, the hike that is expected to nearly affect nearly 12 lakh CNG-powered vehicles in Mumbai metropolitan region including around 2.8 lakh auto rickshaws as well. So, Rucha, that means that the previous hike that happened on the 13th or 14th May, the consecutive hikes has been necessitated by a sharp increase in gas procurement costs.
>> Oh, well, that is correct. In the past 10 to 15 days, we have seen a hike in fuel and CNG and people were relieved that CNG had not gone that high, but now with the hike of 2 rupees overnight, people there is a little panic among people, but there's also awareness that why it is happening because of the because the state of emergency is closed, people are understanding that the Indian authorities do not have access to uh the CNG uh supply and additionally there are some companies. There is Mahanagar and rest of the companies which produce the gas.
That is also now becoming a concern considering the supply that the Mumbai city or entire Maharashtra needs. So, people are also aware of the situation because of the war conflict in Middle East area and the rest Asia. Uh people are also understanding why it is happening and clearly we are seeing it is directly affecting the common man's pocket, but it is also affecting >> availability of domestic gas that seems to have forced the utility to procure a larger share of its requirement from high cost sources. That is now pushing up overall cost, but this fresh increase has reignited demands from auto rickshaw and taxi unions for a fair revision because of the consecutive CNG price hikes. Thank you very much for the moment Richard for getting us that live update. In
