[00:00:00]Have you ever wondered why in some parts of Papa New Guinea, land passes through the father's family, but in other places it comes from the mother's side? PNG is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, and that diversity shows up in how families organize themselves. Across the country, two main systems shape identity, land ownership, and clan life. Petrineal and matrineal societies.

[00:00:33]That means lineage and land inheritance follow the father's line. Land is usually passed from fathers to sons and clan identity comes from the male side of the family. This system is especially common across the highlands and many mainland areas. But in some coastal and island regions, the system is matrinal.

[00:00:56]Here children belong to the mother's clan and land is often passed down to women. Even when men hold leadership roles, women's control of land gives them strong social influence. Maternal uncles also play key roles in raising the sister's children and managing clan affairs. These systems shape gender roles, land rights, and community relationships across PNG.
