I Walked Through One of Nairobi's Most Feared Slums | Here's What I Found

[00:00:00]I wondered how life in slum areas of Nairobi ever looks like. So, come with me as I'm taking you through the life in one of the Nairobi's slum environment.

[00:00:12]So, here I am walking at the slum areas of Nairobi. And in this street, as you can see, the situation here is not that good.

[00:00:22]There are quite a number of drainage system that are not properly made. The houses also these are properly Most houses here are of iron sheet houses. But if even the one that you find very well, they are not that good for a human living. So, the drainage system is also not well, and also the street is somehow the hygiene system is not well maintained.

[00:00:52]So, here is a place where most people usually start life from.

[00:00:58]They here at the point where they come from the village. Most of them starts life from this particular area.

[00:01:06]So, here I am walking at the Kibera slums in Nairobi.

[00:01:13]One of the biggest slums. So, even the kind of houses that are available, even the water system is not adequate. Here, water is being bought at a fee at around 20 shillings. That is 20 Kenya shillings in uh 20 liters of jerrycan.

[00:01:35]And you can imagine most people in this particular slum, they don't have proper jobs. Even the schools, you can see learners are moving out of schools. So, the schools here are also very congested, making learning becomes very difficult.

[00:01:54]So, as I walk through this street, what I can imagine is that there's high cases of unemployment among the youth.

[00:02:05]You can see right now it is 12:00 noon.

[00:02:09]That is daytime, and you can see quite a number of people are just idling at the roadside because there's nothing that they can do.

[00:02:19]No job opportunity for them.

[00:02:22]Even the hygienic system is not that that clean environment. So, this is the sad reality of one of these Nairobi slums, that is Kibera. So, you can see this lorry that have just brought water to them so that they can use because most of the water here is not clean. So, they have to buy it outside.

[00:02:48]So, this slum here here is where people begin their life from.

[00:02:55]So, not all people make it from this particular area.

[00:02:59]>> [screaming] >> Most people always decides to go back to the village because life as the city has become very challenging, and they can no longer sustain themselves.

[00:03:11]The business that I happen to come around the business at this particular area, they are not that sustaining due to the less money or less wages that the families around these slums receives.

[00:03:27]So, you find that even when you own the business in such a particular place, it is even difficult for that business to to expand because of the less income per household.

[00:03:42]So, this is the life at the Nairobi slums, one of the biggest slums, that is Kibera slums.

[00:03:52]So, most people are by the roadside.

[00:03:55]Then the the containers are lined up along the roadside. Just relying at one vehicle that's supposed to supply for them water to drink.

[00:04:07]So, let's now get inside and explore how the inner part how it looks like.

[00:04:14]So, you can see most houses are just made of iron sheet.

[00:04:19]And uh families are living inside these these corners of these houses.

[00:04:25]So, it's a struggle.

[00:04:27]Nothing is is is is free.

[00:04:32]You when you need to when make it.

[00:04:35]So, less people make it. Less people get away of this place.

[00:04:42]So, you can see there's not even a street. This one is one of the corners that even walking at night now becomes difficult because of maybe several incidences.
