The Key to Mastering Greek VocabularyAdded:
Greek vocabulary feels overwhelming sometimes. It's like a thousand letters doing parkour.
It can totally look that way at first, but Greek is actually really organized.
You just need to know the right root.
Okay, show me.
Yeah, that still looks complicated. How is that going to help me? Because you're looking at the surface. We need to go deeper. So, you have the word grapho, which means I write. And then you have the word graphe, which means writing.
Two words, one tiny little change. And then you have epigraph, which means a signature.
Epi means under. So, you think under writing. Why would that make sense to me? But, you sign under what's written above. That is your signature. Then you have um diagraphy.
Deletion.
So, [snorts] dia means through. And so, you think, okay, through writing, how does that make sense? But, to write through meant to cross something off.
So, if you break it down, it's completely logical. Then you have perigraphy, a description. Peri means around. So, originally it meant tracing around the edges of something, like an outline. Perigraphy. Then you have engraphy, registration. En means in. To register someone was to write them into a list.
So, they're not random? Same root, same structure. That's not parkour.
It's a pattern.
And now you know.
