Fighters often conceal injuries during pre-fight medical examinations due to financial incentives to compete, requiring ringside physicians to use physical examination techniques like pressing on metacarpals to detect hidden injuries such as broken hands, separated shoulders, or knee damage, with fighters typically reporting injuries only after the fight to collect insurance benefits.

Why fighters hide injuries and how doctors find themAdded:
Yes, fighters are supposed to report injuries and they never do.
>> [laughter] >> Let's just be honest. Got to get paid.
>> Fighters Fighters get paid to step in that cage and they know that and they go every one of them will say I I'll take care of this after.
But there comes a point where fighters do everything in their power to hide any injuries and to make sure that no one knows about them. You know, this is one of the the simple things that I talk about with ringside physicians and why I'm so impressed with you know, a lot of the really good ringside physicians because when it comes to the medicals on the fighters you got to figure the fighter is the exact opposite of what a doctor gets. A doctor gets someone walking in their office and oh, I have this problem with my elbow and oh, my wrist hurts and oh, I've got this pain in my chest and they tell the doctor everything. Right? And the fighter can be sitting there with a separated shoulder, he could have a knee that's blown and he could >> [laughter] >> he could have They I you can have he could have a jaw that he knows is broken and then he's you know, the doctor's going to say, "Hey, how you feeling? You know, do you have any injuries?" No No No. Looking good. Ready to go. Let's go. Can't wait. Let's go.
You know, and so the doctor has to try to find you know, and sometimes you'll you'll see them you know, grabbing you know, how many times do you have a doctor in California especially taking your hands and pressing on the metacarpals of your hands and everything. And I've seen guys that I know have a broken hand. Not a doubt in my mind and then the doctor will press on it and you'll just you'll see that fighter just looking at him like They're [ __ ] ass cheeks. Dude, I want I want I want I want to punch you with my good hand so bad [laughter] right now.
It's like It's true. It's fighters are never going to report anything. After the fight, they'll report everything.
Absolutely cuz then then you can collect the insurance on it.
