This narrative simplifies complex systemic barriers into a mere matter of personal "work ethic," effectively blaming the individual for any failure to thrive. It is a classic meritocratic trap that validates the status quo by romanticizing the struggle of adaptation.

LIFE AS AN IMMIGRANT LIVING IN CANADA 🇨🇦
Added:And you're so curious like what's going on.
>> Anyways guys, we haven't done a >> We haven't done a sit down video in a long time.
>> She looks like that.
>> We haven't done a >> She looks like almost like what's going on?
>> Yeah, we haven't done a We haven't done a sit down video in a long time and we decided to do this video. Um and I've been getting well I've been seeing a lot of persons like sharing their experience good and bad mainly bad about their time in Canada or migrating in Canada from the Caribbean can be from Jamaica or Trindad wherever it may be.
>> Um and most if I watch like 10 videos at least nine is is a bad experience. So I'm per I'm going to show um share my personal experience since migrating.
What less than how how long since I've been >> Yes. [laughter] >> Um well I think this fall will be 2 years will it not?
>> Two years. Yeah. October. Yeah.
>> October. This October.
>> October coming will be two years since um since I've been here.
>> That's it.
>> Yeah. And let me tell you um I think Kelsey would would normally say is luck but I don't think it's luck. I think it's a matter of um you know God is just continuingly um continuously blessing blessing us blessing me um blessing the family.
So my experience is I do you think it was a bad experience?
I don't think so. Considering it did not take you that long to find a job, I feel like that's probably the hardest thing >> that people when they migrate and they come over here because even Canadians are having a hard time trying to find a job. So considering that cuz what you got here end of October and you got the job basically December.
>> Yeah. All right. So right so yes I think. All right. So let me let me tell you guys let me um jump back a little before I even reach that part. So the moment I got here I knew I had um >> I had a job to do and the job to do The job that I had to do is to just send out a lot of applications because if you know me, I never I'm the I'm the personal person that I don't settle for less.
>> Uhhuh.
>> If I know that I I can um reach the at this level, I'm going to work towards that level. So when I got here um when I whenever time Yeah. in October, I started right away. I just started sending pure application letters like application application resume. I think I sent about more than 50 resume or whatever. Um to be honest, I did not get back a lot of feedback, but I did I did got back a few cuz initially I I wanted to like get into what I used to do in Jamaica, but then you know the train then they need like more training and um the license most of most of the jobs here I need need like social work license. Yes, I was going in the process of sorting that out, but I didn't actually get that um sorted out um in the time that I wanted cuz I didn't want to just come here and just sit down for a long time, right? So, after after sending out a whole lot of applications um a few weeks, I think it's like 2 weeks or whatever. Um and even before that, persons were like um German you should you should try and see if you can get a job in a in a supermarket and whatever. I wasn't trying to act as if I am up there and I don't want a supermarket job. No, that's not the case. But me personally, if I had settled for a job that I really kn I knew I didn't really want at the time, I probably would have stayed in in that job for a long time.
>> So that's why Yes. So that's why I pushed myself out to apply [laughter] and apply for jobs. Not necessarily.
and apply for jobs that um would kind of be in my like purview a little. So, two weeks later I I did um got some some feedback, not necessarily not necessarily jobs in like the social work field, but [laughter] >> what she doing?
>> But I did um send out a few and I got as said, I think I got the feedback in like 3 weeks.
>> Yeah, >> I think it was like in November I got I was able to start a a process. I got through to a um I got a job in a government job >> in actually I got two options at the time. I did have two option at the time but um I couldn't do the the first one because >> I I didn't have um my driver's license at the time. So I didn't I couldn't do that one and then I I I went with the second the second option and that went through by December I had everything by December I I knew I got the job and everything. I was just waiting on the time to start process.
>> Yes. It was a very long process >> a government job. You got to go through >> the screening the physical the how many interviews there were? Three or something like that.
>> Yeah it was a long Sorry about that guys. Yes. By December, I I knew what was going on. And then um I started like end of >> end of March.
>> I think I started end of March closer to like >> beginning of April.
>> Yeah. Be beginning of April. Yeah. Yeah.
So that for me it um I would say it's not even luck. It's just you know God in um God is just working. God has always been working. And then n and then as I said earlier, I'm just this type of person. I cannot sit down. I don't know about sitting down. If if you know me, you know that I've never been sitting down. Right. I'm I'm like this type of person. I have to just just be doing something. Like I feel like if I'm not doing anything, I feel like a a loser.
So I always have to be doing something.
Even cuz even when I left left um left university and persons were like, "Oh, Germaine, you're so lucky to get a job right as you leave university and everything." But I just feel like I'm this type of person. It's not that not about it's not about luck. It's just about the type of individual that I am personally working to get it.
>> Yes. And I go for it. I go for it. And not to say that I wouldn't do any any and any job because if you know me, you know that my first job I was walking and selling stuff for a company. [laughter] >> Yes. So, >> but I think too like I would have felt super guilty you coming to Canada, leaving your dream job in Jamaica and then doing something that like doesn't even pertain to your degree. I would feel super guilty. And I did not want that for yourself. Like I was like, I'm good. I can take care of the bills for a bit. Like I I would rather wait until so you could get into a job that you actually like into something because if you were doing something that you didn't like, you probably would it could change your whole perspective on what you think of Canada.
>> Yeah. And that's where I was going. So as it relates to that part, thank you.
as it relates to that part that I feel like that's why I have not I have not seen or I've not experienced the the the bad part that person that I see persons um saying out or you know experiencing out there saying that oh Canada is not good and the the job market and whatever um I I haven't experienced that um and also I see a lot of person go ahead >> oh no I was just indigestion >> I see a lot of persons also Um, also saying that listen the the weather and whatever they can.
>> I am fortunate to have landed into a a province or yes province that is not this year guys. I haven't seen any snow at all and I'm in Canada. I haven't seen any cold, but our how persons in Ontario and other um provinces, how they um they try to spread the word is like um Canada is just snow and cold and whatever.
>> It's manageable for me >> here in BC.
>> And when you hear me saying that it it is manageable, you're supposed to know that it's actually manageable. Like as I said, we haven't experienced any snow.
Well, they had a they they got a little but it wasn't in Jamaica, but it was literally I heard it was literally just a little.
>> Yes, >> just a little. Yeah, it wasn't much. And then I'm not I've never be experienced that the um >> Yes. N I've never been in a situation where it's like cold cold where I can't manage at all. No.
>> So like these are the things that personally I can't I can't say my experience have have been um have had have Yeah, sometimes my yeah I I can't say my experience have been bad. Um, yes, there are some there are some instances where you will say, "Okay, you know, I feel like it would be [screaming] better feel like it would probably be better in this instance in Jamaica [crying and screaming] as opposed to being here at this at the specific. It all depends on the season.
But to be honest, but to be honest, I cannot I cannot say and and I've never said that because my experience haven't been one that is [crying] is stressing or is depressing. No. Uh and thank thanks be to God.
>> Thanks be to God that I can sit here um today and say that I am not saying this to say that um persons out there don't have different experience and they're not depressed or whatever. Everybody experience is different but I'm just sharing my point of view and my experience since what a a year and a half or whatever a year and a half of um and I I can't I can't look back and say listen oh this or whatever because because of my personality and and and we we we both we both like we're like that type of person that we fight for whatever we want. So yeah, it hasn't been been a bad one for for us personally or for me personally.
>> Anything to add, Kelsey?
>> I don't know. I just think I see like Yeah, when people, you know, migrate, I think they just have like a different perspective or they've got like a false narrative of like, oh, it's going to be so much better to come to foreign blah blah blah blah blah. So like I feel like people put things on a pedestal or have these big um >> what's the word I'm looking for?
>> Expectations. Yeah. Of what they what it should be but then in reality like >> it's not. So it's like and I think that also plays a huge role into how people like experience things too because they have this big expectation like I'm going to come here and make so much money blah blah blah blah blah and all this stuff and it's like in reality like it's hard like and his job that he has like any Canadian would want to get that. So it's like not lack but like you have the the schooling and like the credentials behind it. So like >> but it's also a blessing because of course good say that but it's also it's also a blessing because I've seen other persons coming here with degrees and all engineer degrees um law degree they they're saying that they have a bad experience but I I I don't want to say that those persons um are not trying enough. I don't want to say that, but I feel like sometimes we we get too comfortable or complacent when we land. When we land, I feel like we get too comfortable. We tend to be get too comfortable or get too complacent sometimes.
>> You don't think?
>> Yeah, probably.
>> No, I'm just throwing it out there like the reason why it's probably the case.
And yes, Canada is a is sometime the process is long and it's not that it's not that easy to get into like because to get into my field at um my like my social work field like it is it is it is very very very very hard. So I'm like I'm not like I'm not in my field right now but I'm I'm partially in it.
>> So it's not like I like I'm fully doing like social work social work.
>> All right. So yeah >> kind of.
>> Yeah. It's Yeah, it's kind of cuz Yeah.
[laughter] >> But >> but yeah. Um >> yeah, that that's really my experience.
And um >> I mean I'm sure like food's probably been like the biggest cuz like I mean >> heck I miss the food in Jamaica. So like you you got to be too.
>> So overall I cannot say I um that my experience was bad or it has been bad.
Knock on wood.
>> Mhm.
because I don't want anything to change.
I mean, God has been so good to us and I know he will continue to bless us and continue to, you know, be good to us.
So, yeah, but overall, I cannot um I don't have the same experience like everybody else >> to say that, oh, I it's not good and I want to go back home. I can't I can't say that. Not to say that I'm not I don't want to go back home, >> but I'm just I'm just saying that it's it has not been the worst >> experience.
Yeah.
>> Mhm. And what are you doing?
>> Anyways guys, I think that's that's that's in a in a nutshell. That's everything. Um thanks for watching. Hope this this video kind of motivate um or encourage some persons who are probably thinking twice, thinking of going back home, whether in Canada or US or UK, wherever cuz everywhere I'm I'm hearing like persons going back home. You can go back home if you if you want to. That's [laughter] fine. Um cuz that's my that's my goal ultimately. But at the end of the day, if you want to progress also, you can you can stay and build build your life and make make sure say you build a mansion at home so that when you go home, you have that mansion to live in and everything. All right. But yeah, so I hope this video kind of motivate motivate you or give you that little encouragement to go out there and do it, man. No matter what you do, no matter where you are or how hard it may seem sometimes, just just push through. Just go at it and don't don't you ever give up. All right.
>> Mhm.
>> Anyways, thanks for watching. Peace out.
>> Bye.
>> It's [laughter] been it's been a while we haven't done something like this.
Kelsey, >> I know. What is she doing? She's busy.
>> Please remember to like, >> share, >> comment, and >> subscribe.
>> See you all. Peace out.
>> Bye. Say bye. Na na. You can wave.
Say bye.
>> She's just Say bye >> like this.
>> Bye.
