Looking for a quick fun read this summer? I’ve got you covered!Ajouté :
Hello friends. Welcome or welcome back to my channel. My name is Danny and today I'm going to give you guys some summer reading recommendations. Let me explain to you before we get into the books what I mean by a summer reading wreck. This does not mean a book that is set in summer. I typically find myself not gravitating towards the summer month in general when I'm looking at reads, but I do think that some of my reading preferences are quite summery in theme.
And what I mean by that is they are light, witty, they are fast-paced stories.
Uh, these are books that I feel as though they read very quickly uh, and they're a lot of fun.
Vibrant reads. So, that's what I'm going to give you guys today is a list of recommendations. I have five books for you. There are a variety of genres that I'm going to give you today. I have horror, fantasy, sci-fi, a genre blend, and mystery all represented, so hopefully you can find something that you can enjoy this summer. Let's start with the genre that I found most difficult to find a summer recommendation. I did want to make sure that I was giving you guys a variety of genres in this video and so I gave myself the challenge prior to sitting down to record to make sure that I had a recommendation for you in the fantasy genre, sci-fi, and horror. Those are my main reading genres. So, I figured I should be able to come up with an example for each of those and I think my preference for horror leads a little bit darker and not quite as bubbly as I would imagine a summer read being, but I did find what I think is the perfect recommendation for you guys and it's a story I haven't thought about in a while and I kind of want to reread it now that I'm thinking about it. And that is The Pale House Devil by Richard Kadrey. This features two men. One of them is undead and one of them is just a regular human and they are paranormal mercenaries. And you get to follow them while they are being propositioned to come to this house that has a being that is living in it that people don't want to live there anymore. And you get to see kind of their investigation into the the circumstances, but what I think is really the star of the show in this book and the reason I think it is a summery vibe is the relationship between the two men in the story. They are a hoot to follow. They're witty, they're sarcastic, and I want many, many, many more stories following these two men fighting the paranormal beings that exist in their world. There's a lot of dynamics between the un- undead and the living that I think still could be explored by Richard Kadrey in other stories that we started just get a glimpse of in this first little novella.
And I was pleasantly surprised as I ran across this on Goodreads the other day that it does now have a sequel that I was unaware of. So, it looks like Richard Kadrey is going to come back to these characters every once in a while and write a little novella, maybe a little short story following their antics that they get up to while they are on a job. The next recommendation that I have for you guys is sci-fi. And this is a series as well. It's a series of novellas. I wonder how many of these are going to be novellas. I didn't look at that. [laughter] And that is the Chaotic Orbits series.
The first one is a full full speed to a crash landing by Beth Revis. And I absolutely loved this whole series. I think that it's so fun. It's very clever. The main character whose name is Ada, I believe, is at the very beginning of the story kind of in dire straits.
She has wrecked her spaceship on the way to another spaceship that has also wrecked and she was going to salvage that spacecraft. And she has put out an SOS signal because she is in space. Her uh life support systems are failing. She needs someone to save her and a government shuttle ends up picking her up. And they are on the way to this crashed spacecraft that she was on the way to as well. And you get to learn about what her purpose was in the whole thing. Like her going towards this other spacecraft that had had been shut down. The government entities on the ship that she gets in are a little bit secretive. She's so clever, especially when you get to the end of the story, you really understand what's going on. I just absolutely love this. I think it's so fun. You also have kind of some banter between her and one of the main government agents. His name is Ryan.
I love it.
>> [laughter] >> It's fantastic. It's super fast-paced.
Definitely one I would recommend picking up. Next I have a fantasy. It is actually a genre blend, which is a fantasy mystery, but it's one I couldn't leave off of this list because it is quite chunky, but I do think the vibes of the story, the cast of characters that are in this book are so amazing that it's definitely kind of a bubbly summer read. I think they read really quickly even though they are a little chunky. Let me see. The first one is like 430-ish pages.
>> [laughter] >> And that is The Stranger Times series. I haven't finished the series yet. I've read the first four, I think. Three or four. I think I've read the first four.
And this is a series featuring a news organization. They are called The Stranger Times, and they actually go out and investigate weird topics.
And weird things that happen within the city that they are in. A lot of people consider them a tabloid. They think that the this organization is really just reaching out for things that are going to get clicks and reads, and not actual news. And they are investigating things that people think are fake.
And you have to figure out with the characters as you're reading whether or not these events are supernatural, if there are some things that are happening behind the scenes that maybe people in the real world don't really understand what's happening. There are news clippings throughout this. You get to actually hear, if you listen to the audio, the audio is excellent. You get to hear like these newscasters coming in and announcing these crazy things that are happening within the city that people just think are are antics and things that are put on by the media to freak people out that aren't actually true. I really love this. I think that each and every book that I have read, I have enjoyed the characters even more.
If you think of like your stereotypical newscast where you have like the really mean editor >> [laughter] >> and you have like kind of the the go-getter person, the person who organizes everyone. You have like some chaotic people in the background who definitely make everyone else's jobs harder. Like all of those things exist within this story and you also get um these potentially supernatural things that are happening in the background as well. Also, if you read these, you I implore you to get a physical copy so you can look at the covers because each of the covers in the series is absolutely stunning and has some really intricate details that I think you will enjoy after you read the book. Next, I have another fantasy and it's another genre blend which is a fantasy sci-fi and it's one that I will preface by telling you that I have been told by other people that I read these books out of order.
Because the book I'm going to recommend is a companion to a set of series done by this author and it's definitely later on to show an origin story of characters and supposedly there are some spoilers for the other two series in this book, but I don't care.
And I haven't read the other two series.
I've no idea what spoilers I read. I had a roaring good time with this book and I was not confused or anything prior to you know, I haven't read the other two series and so I could definitely see that there were some things some names being thrown out that maybe should catch my eye that I didn't have any idea, but I don't think that it prevented me from enjoying or understanding the story at all. So I'm going to go ahead and put it in this video.
And if you guys have read the other two series and you're like, "Oh my gosh, I can't believe that you recommended people read that without reading the other two series." Eh.
>> [laughter] >> I guess I'm just I'm I'm out here. This is the way I read them and I think it's fine. So that is the Ballad of Small Hope and Pennyroyal, which is a story of the origins of two bounty hunters coming together and you get to see them on their missions and collecting different things and items.
You are set in the world of the Time Police. I did know from Jodi Taylor that there is a series called the Time Police that I do want to read. There's also another series called I think it's St. Mary's Cathedral or something like that and that also has things a presence within the story of the Ballad of Small Hope and Pennyroyal, but I really I loved the cover of this.
That's why I originally picked it up and I didn't realize that it was part of two other series and I really liked these characters. They are a dynamic duo.
You have Small Hope who is very much a clever person who is going to get her way and it's going to be her way that she does things.
She is fiercely loyal and then you also have Pennyroyal who is a bit of I don't know how to describe him. He's a bit rough around the edges for sure and I just think that they make a really interesting I'm not even going to say couple cuz that's not the the vibe that I got at least for some of it.
And I'm not going to I'm not going to elaborate because [laughter] you have to read the book if you want to know. But I I just really liked it. I thought that their banter was interesting. I thought the the time police the world that Jodi Taylor has created was interesting to be in. Now, do I think that some of the things the missions that Small Hope and Pennyroyal went on in the series would have maybe had a higher impact on me had I understand or understood the background in the other stories? Sure.
But once again, I still enjoyed it. I thought it was a fun time and if you're not wanting to have a really long commitment where you have to read multiple series to get to this one book.
I had fun just reading this. So, I just thought I'd thought I'd throw it out there. I don't hear a lot of people talk about it, but it is a book that I've really enjoyed. The last recommendation that I have for you guys is a mystery and it is one that I've had so much fun with recently. I've read the sequel. The third book is coming out shortly in its original language which was German. Do you guys know where I'm going?
The adaptation also came out this past month which was a lot of fun to see it on screen even though it was a lot different than the book. But I think if you were looking for a mystery that is just a roaring good time, you should read Three Bags Full because I freaking love this book and this series. This is a series that features a flock of sheep whose shepherd is murdered and they have to solve the case. And you have characters like Miss Maple who is inspired by Miss Marple and she is the most intelligent sheep in the flock and has to lead the other sheep to figuring out what happened to their shepherd George.
And I think this is so cleverly done.
You get to see through the eyes of a sheep what humans do, what they talk about, why it's weird. And I just I think that it's very sweet as well.
And even though there are some heavier topics that are covered, I do think that it has a very sunny disposition throughout the entire story even though it is about a murder.
There's always kind of a silly undertone which I really enjoyed. So, this is my last recommendation for you guys. If you are interested in a murder mystery, this is definitely one I think you guys should give a shot. So, those are the five recommendations that I have for you guys for your summer reads. If you are looking for a specific genre and maybe the book that I gave you for that genre you already read or you're not interested in, I would love to give you guys more recommendations in the comments down below or have you give me your recommendations. Just so people have a plethora of books that they can get to if they're just wanting kind of a very sunny, bubbly, quick read that they can get to this summer if they have some free time. If you guys are not feeling chatty but you still want to let me know that you're here, leave me Is there a sheep emoji?
>> [laughter] >> Or if there's not a sheep emoji, they have a bird on the the front cover as well. You can leave me a bird in the comments to let me know that you're here. Thank you guys so much for watching this video. I hope you have a lovely evening and I will see you in the next one. Bye.
