The thoracic cage consists of 25 bones: the sternum, 12 pairs of ribs (24 total), and thoracic vertebrae. The ribs are classified into three types based on their attachment to the sternum: true ribs (1-7) attach directly to the sternum through costal cartilage; false ribs (8-10) attach indirectly to the sternum through the cartilage of the rib above; and floating ribs (11-12) have no anterior attachment to the sternum.
