Anatomy of third ventricle and it’s boundaries
Added:This area is known as third ventricle.
In today's topic, we'll be knowing about boundaries of the third ventricle. It is a midline slit-like cavity which is situated between two thalamus and a part of hypothalamus, which is communicating above with the lateral ventricles and below with the fourth ventricle, as I have mentioned in the previous video, right? So, let's know about the very basic thing. Imagine that this base is known as the midbrain. At the top of the midbrain, there are two thalamus. So, this is known as the right side of thalamus and this is the left side of thalamus. And between the two thalamus, there is a cavity known as third ventricle, right? So, let's know about its boundary in detail, right? Let's correlate with the diagram. This is the again the two side of the thalamus, right? And the left side of the thalamus over here. Now, we have the anterior boundary, somehow posterior boundary, above the roof, below there is a floor, as well as lateral wall, which can be seen on the either side. Let's correlate with the diagram. Roof, the extension of the roof is from interventricular foramen of Monro to habenular commissure, as well as it is formed with the help of the fornix anteriorly, the ependyma, as well as the structure which you can see here is known as the choroid plexus of the third ventricle.
Uh now, we have to know about uh the other boundaries, that is known as the anterior boundary. Just correlate with the diagram. So, anterior wall is formed with the help of uh from above downwards, this is known as the anterior column of the fornix. And below, uh if you trace here, this is known as the anterior commissure. And more below, there is a structure known as the lamina terminalis. So, this is about all about the anterior wall of the third ventricle.
Posterior wall from above downwards, it is formed by so many structures. This is the pineal gland. Just above the pineal gland, you can see habenular commissure.
And below, there is a structure known as the the posterior commissure, right? And there is a duct known as the commencement of the cerebral aqueduct, which is connecting third and the fourth ventricle. So, let's know about the floor from before backwards or from anterior to posterior aspect. Can you see this one is known as the optic nerve? So it forms optic chiasma. Same of there is a tuber cinereum as well as the infundibulum of pituitary gland because pituitary gland cannot be seen here. Breakdown of pituitary gland takes place. This is known as the mammillary bodies over here. And on the backside, this area is known as the tegmentum of the midbrain. So this is the structure which is forming the floor.
So now before dealing with the lateral wall, we have to know about one of the main structure known as interthalamic adhesion. So this is interthalamic adhesion which is connecting the either side of the the thalamus. This area is known as the hypothalamic sulcus which divides the lateral wall into the larger posterior part known as the thalamus. So this is thalamus and below smaller part known as hypothalamus. So this is all about the boundaries of the third ventricle.
There are so many resources. I'll upload about the resources in the long video and I'll upload in the YouTube. If you like the video, please do like and subscribe and share it. Thank you.
