Simon Clark delivers a scientifically rigorous yet accessible breakdown of methane’s disproportionate impact on global warming. It effectively frames the gas's short atmospheric lifespan as a critical, high-leverage opportunity for immediate climate mitigation.

Why is methane so important for reducing warming?本站添加:
There is no opportunity that we have right now that is better than methane for slowing down warming in the near term. Methane absorbs more radiation than CO2 because of its molecular structure. There's a lot more ways for it to interact with radiation and it can vibrate and it can rotate and move and so because of that it can trap more heat as opposed to CO2 which is a more linear molecule and doesn't have as much rotation and vibration. That said, when methane breaks down in the atmosphere, it also forms other greenhouse gases >> [music] >> like tropospheric ozone, stratospheric water vapor, and carbon dioxide. So, methane's warming impact doesn't just come from it as a greenhouse gas itself, but it's also increasing amounts of other greenhouse gases. Methane is responsible for around 30% of the warming we're experiencing today, but all of that warming is mostly coming from methane that was emitted within the past couple of decades because the methane doesn't last very long. So, that means the moment we stop replenishing the atmosphere with methane, that warming impact can be eliminated. And so, what that means going forward is that if we start reducing the amount of methane that we put into the atmosphere, that 30% of warming just diminishes as well.
