This case illustrates that law enforcement officers are not immune from criminal accountability, even when they hold senior positions in crime intelligence units. The incident demonstrates the importance of due process, including proper warrant execution procedures, legal representation, and the right to bail, while also highlighting the challenges law enforcement faces when investigating their own personnel.

Ismael Dawood Turns Himself In After Manhunt & Claims He Feared For His Life
Added:It has been put out that crime intelligence police officer is wanted.
So, on the 17th of July 2026, the police went looking for a senior SAPS crime intelligence officer, Colonel Ishmael Darwood, and apparently have failed to find him. It was also stated that an official warrant of arrest had already been issued, and it wasn't for a regular matter, but for an alleged extortion case involving approximately 350,000 rands.
Apparently, the police tried to make matters simple with his lawyers, in which a handover was then agreed on, which also never happened.
They went to his Centurion townhouse, and he was nowhere to be found. Soon after being regarded as a fugitive, Darwood walked into a police station and turned himself in on the 20th of July 2026, while stating that he fears for his life.
What had me wondering was if he was truly on the run from something else, and did he feel that he ended up having no other choice but to turn himself to the police?
After a little research, I noticed something triggering that might be unfolding. Firstly, we note that the police had obtained a warrant of arrest for Darwood, in which the matter is said to be linked to an [music] alleged extortion case, which was opened on the 5th of March 2025.
See, this is a case that has been investigated for a while now, and the alleged amount forming part of the case is said to be approximately 350,000 rands.
An investigation that has been running for over a year until this two-day operation.
>> Law enforcement have executed a J50 warrant of arrest searching for a senior crime intelligence officer, a Colonel Ismael Dawood. Now, we understand a case was opened last year in relation to extortion to the tune of about plus minus 360,000 rand. Earlier, we got leads from our sources who told us that there were talks and conversations between Dawood's legal representatives and of course relevant law enforcement units to try and have him brought to a police station in Johannesburg where he would then be arrested. The intention was to bring Dawood to the police station. However, that did not happen. Essentially, what happened was that the legal team and Dawood would meet at a nearby filling station as well and then bring him to the police station, but also that failed. Law enforcement then went to the residence of Mr. Dawood where they went inside and try to see if they can find him. However, he had left his residence as well. We know that the units, of course, operating on this takedown process as well is the hard thing PKTT, crime intelligence, hard thing tracking a team unit, and of course hard thing anti-corruption unit led by General Mbuso Khumalo. Police have urged the public to give them any information about Dawood's whereabouts and we know that investigations are currently ongoing.
>> This case has also been believed to be treated as a schedule five matter.
Dawood, who is a law enforcement officer, is also believed to be second in command of the anti-kidnapping unit and he reports to Farouk Khan.
Things started to get twisted when it was revealed that he was also the first police officer on the scene when Farouk Khan Coincidence, right?
Ishmael Tarwood has been associated with the national anti-kidnapping team.
And he has a long history with the law as this is not his first time being in trouble.
He was previously acquitted in a high court matter back in 2023 involving alleged medieval persuasive techniques and he has also been cleared in a disciplinary hearing that happened earlier this year.
Now, this is how this operation came to the spotlight. After 3 hours of negotiations and agreeing to turn himself in, he never showed up.
The later defense position from his counsel was that he would hand himself over on the 20th of July 2026.
The police did go to his upmarket townhouse in Sandton. Several police made entry triggering a panic alarm that was activated by one of the residents.
After realizing it was a police operation, they were then given permission to conduct their work.
As the police entered his residence, Tarwood was nowhere to be found.
According to reports, his wife was at the residence and was later accompanied to the police station for questioning.
According to Tarwood's attorneys, he is not evading authorities. He is not a fugitive. The on the run claims are false. He states there has been extensive with the officers on this case. The attorney wanted him to be promptly taken to court so that he could apply for bail.
Tarwood denies all wrongdoings and claims there was no emergency requiring their first execution and he has also stated that he is in fear for his life and as a senior police officer, he may hold devices containing important and private information.
The attorneys also stated that they informed investigators of the Monday surrender, and they also had a call that lasted as long as 9 minutes involving senior intelligence officers investigating this case. Dali was aware of the warrant's existence and that it had to be executed on Friday, and these instructions came from General Kumalo.
Better yet, the police denied to provide the nature of the case, the case number, the dates the warrant was issued, a copy of the warrant, and the reason why it had to be executed after court hours on the 17th of July.
Judging from how he handled this, this may also harm his chances of getting bail as he will be considered a flight risk.
