[00:00:00]As a teacher, preacher, whatever you want to call him, I just find him mildly interesting and not that helpful and certainly not very relevant to today.

[00:00:11]More than anything, I find his teachings have turned into problematic things that have been used to justify horrific acts throughout history. And I would have hoped that an all-knowing, all-powerful God would have seen that coming. So much so that many of his words were used in books and in writings to justify owning other humans as slaves. She's equating Jesus Christ to God because they're the same person, right? Cuz I know what everybody say as a Christian. Everybody say, "Well, Jesus Christ himself didn't endorse or condone slavery, but he's God, right? They're the same people in one."

[00:01:08]And I always say this, bro. My favorite part about the Christian Bible, about the Christian faith, is indeed J Christ.

[00:01:17]Right? Because I believe that the teachings and the things that he embodied are things that are beneficial to society, you know? Love yourself, love your neighbor as yourself, you know, turn the other cheek, you know? I think Jesus Christ as a person just screams peace, personally to me. But that is not the same perspective for everybody, for every atheist, for every agnostic in regards to Jesus. Some people think that there are issues about this Jesus Christ persona. Right? Now, I don't want to take it towards the lines of whether or not he claimed to be God or whatever. Uh I just want to explore some perspectives through which people might see J Christ as somebody who didn't live a sinless life, as somebody who is problematic in some ways. So, today the video that I'm going to be reacting to is coming from Promise Backland.

[00:02:24]Amen. Same, man. I'm so excited to hear what she has to say, bro. Cuz personally, I like J Christ. I think he was a cool guy, like I said before. But, I wouldn't say he was perfect because he referred to Gentiles as dogs, you know, in one of the in one of the passages in the Bible. I wouldn't say that's perfect, but to me he's a good guy. But, let's hear what Promise has got to say.

[00:02:51]>> are five reasons that I think Jesus wasn't actually that great. Let's hear them.

[00:02:56]>> Number one, I don't think there's anything that unique about the claim that he participated in a sacrificial death on behalf of all humanity. That's where we're going.

[00:03:06]>> People put their lives on the line for others all the time. In fact, we have countless stories of people actually sacrificing their life to save somebody else. And often times it's not to save lots of people, it's just to save one person.

[00:03:20]>> Okay.

[00:03:21]>> So, this idea that Jesus was able to sacrifice himself on behalf of the entire world, there are lots of people that would be willing to do that. If they heard that their death would result in saving the rest of humanity, they would absolutely say yes because we already have people saying yes every day to risking their lives for others. Listen, bro. I'll tell you right now, bro. I'll tell you right now, bro. If some fairy godmother came to me and is like, "Posh, would you give your life if cancer suffering, stealing, lying, cheating, robberies, corruption, volcanoes, earthquakes, if all those things were to be wiped away and the world became an oasis of love, peace, and safety, and harmony across all boundaries, all peoples and everything, but you die. You'll take me right now.

[00:04:21]Take me right now. It'll be an honor to let down my life for such a glorious act. I mean you take me, but that two-year-old in the hospital with leukemia right now gets to live?

[00:04:39]Bro, that's a no-brainer. And fun fact, fun fact, I'mma give y'all some game right now. I don't know if it's going to be game, but whenever I'm talking to a girl and it's a serious thing and I really like this girl and I want to I'm going to get to know her. I want to be with her.

[00:04:54]I ask her this question. The same thing I just said. If a fairy godmother or somebody powerful, somebody who was powerful comes to you and is like "Hey, beautiful lady.

[00:05:04]Would you give your life right now if all the things I mentioned came to pass?"

[00:05:11]Sometimes they'll say, "Of course, no-brainer." And those are the ones that we get along and eventually ends cuz so you know some other things, but we get along, but some have said no and at that point I got to cut ties.

[00:05:26]>> [laughter] >> At that point I got to cut ties because for me that question points one thing out to me. It shows me your level of empathy. Like how much do you care about the world around you? And one girl in particular answered saying, "Why would she give her life? Her life's too precious to be given for such acts.

[00:05:49]And I'm like, "Wow." Yeah, don't talk to me again.

[00:05:53]I will never message you again, ever, because I need empathy. I need people who care about others, right? I feel like the world is riddled with way too much selfishness.

[00:06:05]Way too much. And I And I need people who care. People who care, it's just care, you know? Care about the random guy on the bus sitting next to you. And don't put your bag on the seat so you can have a seat as well. Like little things like that, you know? Just care.

[00:06:20]But anyways, though, in terms of Jesus Christ's sacrifice, I would say that, even as a Christian, right? I struggled so heavily to see how Christ dying saved me.

[00:06:35]Like, even as a Christian, right? I'm like, what does Christ dying on the cross have to do with my sin? Right? Cuz I am still able to sin. I am still able to die. I am still able to go to hell. So, what's the point of Christ's death? And this is where the denomination comes into play because free grace Christians believe in free grace. So, you go to heaven because Christ already paid for your sins. In that case, I can understand the point of Christ's sacrifice.

[00:07:12]Right? But when I still have to put in a lot of work, it's like, what was the point? I'm still able to sin, and I'm still able to get punished by my sin, and I'm still able to die because they say that Christ went to hell to defeat death. And I'm like, "Okay, in what realm do you mean defeating death?

[00:07:34]Did he defeat death for the people who were going to be saved?

[00:07:38]Because death still exists. Or in what sense did Christ defeat hell? So, now this might piss some Christians off and I'm sorry gang. I'm of the school of thought that Christ's sacrifice was pointless.

[00:07:54]I'm sorry. I know Christians are going to hate me for this. I'm sorry bro. I think if the plan was to send Christ to die for our sins, I think that was a pointless death. I think because I mean since still exists, death still exists and hell still exists. So, and again, I might be wrong, all right? I am no biblical scholar and I've never claimed to be, right? So, maybe I just don't understand these things, right? And if that's the case, feel free to educate me in the comments, right? But let's proceed. Not only do these people risk their lives for others, they do it knowing that if they die, they will not get to come back. Jesus is a claimed deal. He was only dead for about a day and a half, not even a full weekend before he supposedly resurrected. He didn't even have to offer up the kind of sacrifice, the permanent sacrifice.

[00:08:43]>> So, so what I said before, right? If the deal was you die, you come back in a day and a half or in three days, sign me up.

[00:08:52]>> [screaming] >> Overly sign me up. Sign me up so hard because that's a that's a good deal, all right? I get to rid the world of evil AND I COME BACK.

[00:09:04]I MEAN, WHO WOULDN'T TAKE THAT DEAL? And I okay, I understand that suffering on the cross or any other brutal way would suck.

[00:09:12]You know, I get it, right? It's going to suck. I'm going to cry.

[00:09:15]Probably a lot. It's going to hurt. But the end goal, the reward, it's way too massive to ignore. It's too big of a deal to ignore. that a human would were they to be the ones to lay their life down on behalf of humanity. So, I don't find his crucifixion, his sacrifice very compelling at all. People will been through much worse torture and violence and pain and death than Jesus ever was.

[00:09:42]Reason number two that I don't >> know I'm sorry to keep pausing, but I know a lot of Christians would find grabs with that cuz there are Christians to this day that believe that Christ suffered more than anybody has on the planet. And I wholeheartedly disagree, gang. I couldn't disagree any more than I do, bro. I believe that there are people on this planet who have experienced suffering that I couldn't even that I couldn't even conceptualize in my noggin, bro. Like people have been through stuff. And it's not that they've been through it one time, they experienced it for decades, for years and years and years. Their entire life was pain. Their entire life was suffering, bro. There's people like that that have existed, right? I'm not going to undermine the suffering that Christ endured if he endured it, right? Cuz again, it's still under debate if But the suffering that he endured, I'm not going to undermine it as it is told, right? The nails in his hands, his feet, the whippings, putting up flesh, you know, yes, carrying a very heavy cross, you know, brutal stuff, very, very, very, very brutal.

[00:10:50]But I still wouldn't agree with you that that was the most suffering that anybody on the planet has experienced. I disagree so much.

[00:10:59]>> And Jesus was that great.

[00:11:01]For someone that's supposedly operating on behalf of an all-knowing, all-loving God, he was a pretty shitty communicator. He spoke largely in parables and contradictions, leaving people to argue amongst themselves about what he actually meant. Was he pro-violence in that he came to bring not peace, but a sword and said that every man should go buy a sword? Or did he believe in loving your enemies and turning the other cheek? Why did he claim that if you have faith of a mustard seed, you could move a mountain, and yet nobody has ever moved a mountain purely by believing that they could move it. Was that just a metaphor? Why didn't he say that? Why didn't he make it clear what his stances were, knowing, if he's all-knowing, that someday there would be people literally going to war over his words and trying to decipher who can tell what he was trying to say best.

[00:11:53]Number three, on that note, for being an all-knowing God, why didn't he condemn slavery? Knowing that eventually his own words would be used to support the idea of enslaving other humans. Not only that, but he said that he came to fulfill, not abolish, the laws that very clearly stated, not just that you could own slaves, but how to own them and how to properly beat them. Not once did Jesus take the time to say, "Hey, do not own other humans as slaves."

[00:12:23]>> like buddy like buddy like buddy, right?

[00:12:25]Let's just Let's just imagine a fairy tale world where Jesus Christ had said explicitly, "DO NOT OWN SLAVES." OH.

[00:12:36]THE AMOUNT OF LIVES THAT would have been saved by that one line, bro. That one line, "Don't own your fellow human as a slave."

[00:12:51]The book that doesn't exist, chapter something, verse whatever.

[00:12:54]If that was just somewhere in there, that would have saved so many lives.

[00:13:00]That would have reduced the amount of enslavement that occurred in our history, but it did not exist.

[00:13:09]One can only wish, man. We can only imagine this in the fairy tale world because it doesn't exist in our reality.

[00:13:17]And I can only wish that it did. This is immoral and wrong.

[00:13:22]Instead, he often used them in his stories. So much so that many of his words were used in books and in writings to justify owning other humans as slaves. Number four, he made very cult-like demands >> clearly she's equating Jesus Christ to God because they're the same person, right? Cuz I know what you're about to say as a Christian, right? You're about to say, "Well, Jesus Christ himself didn't endorse or condone slavery, but he's God, right? They're the same people in one, right? So, God endorsing in the Old Testament is equivalent to Jesus Christ endorsing it because they're one, right?

[00:14:05]Yeah. followers, telling them that it would be better for them to hate their family and follow him, saying things like, "Let the dead bury their dead. Who cares that your dad just died? Don't worry about burying him, just come join me and follow me." As a result of this, we have people who have actually disowned family members in order to follow their faith. They care more about a dogmatic belief, a religion, than they do about people that are their own flesh and blood, than humans right there, living in the moment with them.

[00:14:35]>> Yeah. These are definitely not the words of a god.

[00:14:37]>> the faith prompts you to do, right? The faith prompts you to focus more on the spiritual, the afterlife, your heavenly race, as opposed to the material, the world, the now, right?

[00:14:55]That's why they're like, "Don't be of the world. Remove yourself from the world because the devil owns the world."

[00:15:01]So, yeah, man, it's not I mean, that kind of creates a lot of problems, but I don't have to spell it out for you, right? that values community and family and being there for each other and enjoying the time that we do have together. And number five, Jesus's golden rule is actually not that great and not that interesting. I'll read it to you. It's in Matthew 7:12 and it says, "So, whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the law and the prophets."

[00:15:32]Do to others what you would want them to do to you. Let me tell you why that's not that great. We are all unique individuals. Yes, there's a lot of overlap in how we like to be treated.

[00:15:43]However, that's not a 100% accurate way to determine how to treat others. For example, if you treat me how you like to be treated, there's a large chance that some of that is going to be something I don't necessarily enjoy. Maybe I'm not super On this part, I might have to disagree because I feel like here or she's speaking more on a micro scale, like little things that I might dislike that you might like. So, because you like it, you do it to me. But, I think it's better to observe this on a macro scale. Like, if I don't want to be stolen from, I wouldn't steal from you. If I don't want to be hit, I wouldn't hit you, right?

[00:16:26]Things that are more general, that apply to everybody else.

[00:16:32]Uh but, in this case, I think she's like, for example, if you like being hugged, but I don't like being hugged, and you try to hug me, I don't like that. I think that's what she's trying to say here, something like that. But, I wouldn't say it to observe it that closely. I would say it to observe it more on a general level. I think she might be reading too deeply into the words because I'm of the school of thought that do unto others what you want to be done to yourself. But, when I say that, I think about it on the micro scale. If you would hate to be robbed, then don't rob somebody else. I don't know if you get what I mean, but yeah. super into extravagant birthday celebrations, and then you go all out for my birthday for me, and I feel uncomfortable. But, that's something you would love. You would love an extravagant birthday, so you assume I should treat you how I want to be treated. Let me tell you what I think would make a better golden rule.

[00:17:26]>> That would be to treat others how they want to be treated. Maybe you don't love talking on the phone, but your best friend really does. So, every week you make a phone call. You reach out to them, and you offer a display of kindness for them.

[00:17:40]>> niche, right? Cuz that's to your friend.

[00:17:42]How about somebody you don't even know them? Right, you don't know what they want. I guess the rule of Christ in that case would apply because you don't know what they want, so you would like to treat them the way you would want to be treated because you don't know what they want. That's what I'm trying to say.

[00:17:59]Like, what she's trying to say here is very niche. It's very particular to certain situations, but the rule of Christ is more broad, more general. It's like, you don't want to be slapped?

[00:18:10]Well, don't slap somebody else, right? And I kind of agree with that. It's not necessarily your thing. Cuz otherwise, if you treated them how you like to be treated, you'd never call them, and they would be left feeling like you don't value the friendship. So, this advice of treating others how you want to be treated is really just not that wise.

[00:18:30]It's oversimplified and doesn't apply to a lot of circumstances. I mean, I think it applies to more general circumstances, and it's just not niche enough. It's not specific enough.

[00:18:42]And that's a fair argument, right? And you could be like, "Okay, when it's niche, treat people how they want to be treated. When it's specific, when it's close-knit, then you can treat people how they want to be treated cuz you know how they want to be treated." But on a general scale, then you treat people how you want to be treated because you obviously don't know how they want to be treated. I hope I'm making sense cuz to me it doesn't sound like I'm making sense, but I hope that it translates between me and you. Okay, cool. Great for a supposedly all-knowing, all-powerful, all-loving God. Overall, we really don't know that much about Jesus. He was only in ministry, at least that we know of, for about 3 years of his life, and he didn't do that much.

[00:19:28]>> Oh, on that part, right? We only know of 3 years of his life, right?

[00:19:34]But Christians say he lived a sinless life, but a huge chunk of his entire life is like nobody knows.

[00:19:43]No clue. So, how can you claim so fervently that he lived a sinless life?

[00:19:48]You know what I mean?

[00:19:49]So, I think there's an issue there, but hey. But hey. Considering he was somebody who supposedly could have done anything. If you granted me the ability today to, let's just say, be able to heal children from terminal illness, I would do everything in my power to go around and heal every possible child that I could. But we don't have stories like that of Jesus in the Bible. He has some random, small, little, supposed supernatural acts and miracles that he performs. I think his story is interesting, at best. I think there's some things he said that are cool and kind of helpful and relevant to today, But I think she's granting Jesus Christ a little bit of slack. She's like she's not granting him a little slack. I think the majority of Jesus Christ's teachings were good for the average person. I would say that Jesus Christ is a good way to mirror your life and mirror who you want to be.

[00:20:44]Obviously, there are contradictory statements of his, but for the most part, right? The or the things that are more popular across Christians about Jesus Christ are very good to tailor your life towards, right? So, I think she's being a little you know, she's not granting him a lot of slack, but hey. I guess perspective.

[00:21:04]things are then undermined by other things he says. And like I made in one of my points, uh he's just not that great of a communicator. There are plenty of philosophers and other religious figures that offer even more interesting and more wise points. And I think he's just another one of those. As a Christian, I found the story of Jesus to be the most beautiful thing I have ever heard.

[00:21:28]>> But that's because there were years of me creating this story in my head, creating an image of who I believed Jesus to be, and projecting my own desires and wants onto this character because I was told he was perfect. So, I created in my mind what perfect was.

[00:21:44]After all, the term perfect is a subjective term. We don't actually have a standard for what that is. And of course, ultimately what would make Jesus actually interesting is if the supernatural claims about him were true.

[00:21:57]But we don't have evidence backing those things. We do not have evidence that he rose from the dead. We don't have evidence that he performed miracles.

[00:22:05]None of that. And therefore, as a teacher, preacher, whatever you want to call him, I just find him mildly interesting and not that helpful. And certainly not very relevant to today.

About the book being inconsistent about it being contradictory. So, that's another problem within itself.
