After a tooth extraction, patients should avoid using straws for at least 48 hours because the suction can dislodge the blood clot that protects the extraction site, potentially causing bleeding or developing dry socket—a painful condition characterized by worsening pain on day three, bad breath, and visible white bone in the socket.

Don’t Do This After a Tooth ExtractionAdded:
No sucking on the straw if your kid or you had tooth extraction for at least 48 hours. Younger kids straws [music] 24, for older definitely longer. Because you can suck out with negative pressure that blood clot from the inside of extraction. Guess what happens? Number one, you can start bleeding. Number two, for older kids and adults, you can develop dry socket. That means your pain is getting worse on day three and you have this horrible smell from your mouth. [music] And if you look inside, it looks white.
It looks white bone inside. Looks like a big hole and walls are white. So if you see that all, go to your dentist. Make sure that you did not develop that secondary [music] complication because you were not listening, you were sucking on those straws.
