Effective magic systems in storytelling can balance the inherent tension between their potential for wonder and their capacity for danger by combining structured rules (hard magic) with boundless creative possibilities (soft magic), as demonstrated in Witch Hat Atelier where the magic system's strict rules enable both spectacular feats and catastrophic consequences, creating a nuanced exploration of how magic's application determines whether it serves as a force for good or destruction.

How Witch Hat Atelier Balances Light and DarknessAdded:
Hi there everyone. Lars here from Camille's Herum, a channel for novice writers by novice writers. And because writing is an adventure, it's way more fun with friends. And I want to take you along with me to the world of Witch Hat Italier. This is such an incredible story with amazing characters, great action, beautiful animation, fantastic usage of magic, some interesting themes, and all kinds of plots and world building, all just unfolding magnificently in a well-paced story.
Holy cow, this is great. And a lot of people have been talking about this show. It obviously is going to be in the running for anime of the year. But one of the things that I don't believe has been talked about enough is how this story beautifully balances two ideas about magic that a lot of writers have a very hard time reconciling. In fact, rather than trying to reconcile these two ideas, they normally side with one or the other. And what I'm talking about here is the danger and darkness of magic versus the light, the optimism, the potential, the beauty of magic. Usually, and this is this is really to kind of boil it down, almost oversimplifying it, but I think this provides a good groundwork for us to work with.
Normally, you see people fall into either category. Either magic is dark, dangerous, mysterious, should not be trusted, it's dangerous, or it's amazing, it's fantastical, everyone should have it. Don't you just love magic? You normally fall into one of two camps based on either how soft your magic system is or how hard your magic system is. Now, before your minds go into the gutter, let me briefly explain what I mean by soft magic systems versus hard magic systems. Soft magic systems are those that do not have clearly defined rules or what rules you do have are incredibly sparse. This allows for magic to really kind of do just about anything. You don't know what its limits are. You don't always know who could handle it. You don't know what the consequences might be. And this is one of the reasons why, as I will get as I'll elaborate on further, soft magic systems usually tend more towards magic is dark, dangerous, you shouldn't touch it, or if you do, understand that there's going to be a lot of risks involved. Versus the hard magic systems, which have bountiful amounts of rules, sometimes even too many rules. So much so where magic is far more of a science.
You know that when you do A, you can get B and the results will also later on be C. You will always know that these words, these components, these physics, these items, whatever it be, will re will result in these specific consequences. That is a hard magic system. You will then know, okay, with 10 fairies on my side, I will always be able to do this. with this magical item uh in my belt, I will always be able to walk on water no matter what. If I swear an oath with this particular god, I will have 10 spells always in use. That is your hard magic system. It'll get even more into the minutia of what those spells are, what kinds of fairies you need to have, why exactly it is that that particular magical item works specifically for that reason. the histories and everything. It's glorious.
I personally love hard magic systems because there's just so much more you can dive into. You can start really as a fan experimenting with all kinds of great great ideas because you have all the rules laid out before you. But at the same time, soft magic systems are a whole lot of fun because you have boundless potential in front of you.
True, you don't necessarily have the rules to work with, but you know what?
That's where your imagination comes in.
And really, what's wrong with that? As a writer who writes a lot of stories where the magic system is based on imagination. Woo! Yeah, I absolutely love it. But at the same time, I also like rules. Can't I have both in the same story? Well, that is what Witch Hat Italier does. It brings both of these together. First, I need to point out that the magic system in Witch had to tellier is absolutely a hard magic system. It might not immediately seem that way because we don't have literally all the different rules and all the different runes laid out in front of us, but that's because the combinations of runes are basically infinite. Based on your skill, your knowledge, and your imagination, you can do just about anything with runes and magic circles in Witch Hat Italier. But there are very strict rules about how that works with how you make your circles, the strength of the lines, the position of the lines, the particular runes and symbols that you use. They're various combinations, how you layer circles upon each other.
These are actually very good concrete rules that are depicted very early on in the show and that are reliable again and again and again. The show makes it a point that the young girls need to constantly be practicing these circles and runes and symbols and their specific placements because if you get it wrong, bad things will happen or you might not just get the results that you want. So, it is a hard magic system with very concrete rules, rules that can always be applied and that you will get the exact consequences that you're aiming for if you're doing it right. But at the same time, its potential is boundless. It's like a soft magic system where again if you know what you're doing, you can do all kinds of fantastic things. And this is very early on shown already going into episodes four and five where the Brim Had witches are able to do all different kinds of things with creating specific spaces that change and alter themselves, teleportation spells, summoning monsters to places, all based on how they know that you can bring all these different symbols together in an an exact pattern that basically performs just these wondrous miracles. And then of course there is the added element of the color that is added to the ink and the components of the ink itself leading all the way up to human blood being used in the ink as well which just gives this fantastic boost of energy to the spell that allows it to go way beyond a witch's intent. devastatingly so as we see what happens when Koko accidentally turns an entire riverbed into sand. And that is where the darkness of witch had magic system comes out. the fear, the danger or why the witches are so adamant on controlling the knowledge of magic even to the point where they oppress and abuse people within their own order and society in order to ensure that magic is not used beyond a certain point because they cannot control the limitless potential of anyone's imagination or knowledge and the consequences that would result of people experimenting with all the different kinds of symbols and circles. that you could create. And what we already get in the very first episode is we have this spell that no one recognizes that creates kind of a well a forest or moss growth of crystals that just consumes everything, consuming Koko's home and her mother. And it's a spell that Kefrey has no idea what it is or really how to stop it. Best what he can do is he can slow it down and hope that within time they can find a way of reversing this particular spell. And again, when Koko accidentally destroys a river by trying to turn a boulder into dirt and then turning the entire landscape around her into dirt thanks to just the extra boost of having blood in her ink. Then on top of that, there's the the ability to create entire dimensions, pocket dimensions that will then operate according to all different kinds of weird rules of physics and things that actually break the laws of logic. Yeah. When you start considering what kinds of spells are there that that any witch could potentially use once he or she has enough knowledge and practice, oh yeah, that's absolutely terrifying. Conceivably within within this world, someone could create a spell that could cause a black hole and cause the entire planet to collapse in on itself. It is theoretically possible.
And at this point, being able to create pocket dimensions, it is not outside of the realms of possibility, not even in the slightest. And this danger is further amplified by what the witches themselves have done. Because in their past, when all of humanity had access to the knowledge of magic and used it to the point where they almost destroyed the entire planet, the witches decided that they were going to restrict that knowledge and wipe people's memory. Not only wipe people's memory, but then make sure that all future apprentice witches would never learn the greater secrets of magic. So much so that they went out and destroyed some of their own orders. And we learned in the most recent episode that they even wiped out the healers in order to ensure that the knowledge of how to use magic on human bodies would never be passed down. This is an incredibly harsh move to make. You've cut out the ability of healing people magically. The ability to rid the world of diseases and cancer, give people longer life, maybe even bring back children from death who died before their time. All of that knowledge, all that potential, all that magic ripped away trying to prevent more horrible things from happening. But because now witches in the time of Koko and Kefir are completely ignorant of the greater magic that was once wielded by their ancestors. This allows now for their enemies to utilize their own learned ignorance against them and wield tremendous power and tricks over them to the point that they don't really know how to stop this. And the order itself is so terrified of their own ignorance that you have the knights moralis who brutally crush any sort of opposition, any sort of devian from what the order had prescribed. This is the way to act.
This is a world of terror. Where people live in ignorance, there is fear. where that ignorance is enforced through brutality, people are genuinely scared of ever innovating or exploring beyond their prescribed bounds. And the dynamic of master to apprentice is there to enforce that learned ignorance, which only helps to increase the terror just underneath the surface of this magical witch community, which again on the surface it looks fantastic. You go into these cities and towns where witches are well respected, where they reign supreme, and it just seems so glorious and amazing. But the moment you start digging just a little bit deeper, you realize how scared these people are of just stepping any way [clears throat] out of their lane. And people who are not qualified to be witches in any kind of way are shunned because of the danger of them ever potentially learning magic.
And it's just creates this system of fear, ignorance, oppression, and suppression. All of which culminates in danger, darkness, and fear. At the same time, this is just so beautifully juxtaposed by characters like Koko, who is just so enamored with magic, its potential, the beauty it brings, the help it can provide. And while she understands why there are all of these rules in place, and she's trying to stay within those boundaries and within those rules, she learned brutally in the first episode what happens when you use non-sanctioned magic. Magic from a darker, older age that would result in horrible things like this happening. She knows she should not step outside of her bounds, but she recognizes as well, even as a young girl, just how much incredible potential there is for the application of magic to help other people to do amazing things and to learn even more. And on top of that, Koko being the good, innocent, sweet cinnamon roll that she is, has no inclination, no intention whatsoever of using her magic in any sort of awful way. Even though there are some incredibly big mistakes that she makes along the way, she is always intending to help other people, to save other people. Even though she accidentally turns an entire landscape into a desert, it was all to protect a boy from drowning, to also get the massive boulder off of him that was crushing him. It was born out of good intent. It was absolutely not her fault what happened. A better example actually is when she and the others are trapped within this pocket dimension and having to deal with a dragon. And what does she do? She's like, "Wait a second. I really like the idea of creating just a big softy big soft fluffy cloud that this dragon could fall on and fall asleep.
This is this is a big cranky dragon.
What if we did something nice for it?"
And the others are like, "What?" And even when Kefree shows up, Kefree is like, "I'm just going to just slay this dragon." and just utilizes overwhelming power. And yes, he beats the dragon, but it's really very interesting because Koko basically does the same thing. She has beaten the dragon, but beating the dragon without having to shed a single drop of blood without having to get violent. There are applications for magic to do incredibly wholesome and good things, very positive things. It all comes down to how you yourself decide that you're going to use it. On top of that, the way that the magic that the witches have developed allows for for instantaneous travel, for greater communication, for the illumination of cities, for greater technology to be developed, for security for the masses.
All of these things are very, very positive. So the way that witchellier manages to pull off this balance of light and darkness is all in the application of that magic. By having a very strong hard magic system that is very clear on its rules, but its potential is balanced just like a soft magic system. It allows implicitly, inherently, naturally, even within the story to embrace both ideals rather than having to side with one or the other.
Now, since this is a channel by novice writers for novice writers, what kind of writing advice can we even pull out of this particular observation and conversation? One of the things that I would say is this is that when it comes to writing your own magic systems, think about what you want the potential and the results of your magic to be. Magic is fun. Magic is awesome. I love exploring all different kinds of magic systems. I love doing all different kinds of systems within my own work. But you have to ask yourself, what purpose is magic serving to this particular story? In the case in the case of witch hat it Italier what we get is we get an exploration of society through its usage of magic and we have Koko teetering on this interesting needle point of where how do you find that balance because there's so much goodness in magic but there's also just this horrible [snorts] potential on the other side. Do you lean one way entirely or the other? Because if you lean into just oh the goodness of magic we shall do things within the boundaries of the law that only upholds this very oppressive system. Whereas if you dive more on over into the darkness well then all kinds of horrible things could come from wielding that magic.
Also a lot of good things can happen but again the consequences are entirely severe. Where is that? Where's that?
Where's that point of equilibrium between goodness and darkness? How is magic really to be used by those who have that knowledge? And how can they use it responsibly in a way that helps other people? So for your own stories, think about what is it that you want to do with your magic systems? Do you want to explore society? Do you want to test the limits of what an individual can do?
Power scaling? Are you using the magic to facilitate character development? Are you using the magic for some really cool worldbuilding reveal and climax culmination of what the powers can actually do? Is your usage of magic meant to communicate something more thematic, religious, or what exactly is it that you wish to do with magic?
That's something that I think that you should really take to heart. It's not just what can your magic do, but what is the purpose that your magic is playing within the story. When magic plays into the purpose of the story, the magic becomes truly wondrous or it can become suddenly wonderfully disturbing.
[laughter] If this is a conversation that you would like to see go even deeper into other examples from Fable Haven to Harry Potter to the cosmir to a song of ice and fire to the Witcher to so many other uses of magic across all different kinds of stories. That's something that you really want to get into, please let me know in the comments because I would love to have that conversation. And what witch hat Itellier has done I think is really kind of throw the doors open to really thinking what can we do with magic not simply what can the magic itself do but thematically what are we meant to do with the magic systems that we write and how can we bend and warp the expectations that come with soft magic systems or hard magic systems to do something creative new and entertaining. So with all that being said, thank you so much for joining us through this incredible adventure that we call writing.
