India’s unemployment rate hits 6-month high at 5.2% in April 2026

[00:00:00]The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation has released its 13th monthly bulletin of the periodic labor force survey showing India's unemployment rate for those aged 15 and above reached a 6-month high of 5.2% in April 2026.

[00:00:17]While the overall figure remained broadly stable compared to the previous year, a closer look at the data reveals a shifting landscape between cities and the countryside. Urban unemployment eased marginally to 6.6% marking the lowest level for urban women since April 2025.

[00:00:36]However, this progress was offset by a slight increase in rural joblessness, which rose to 4.6% The survey, which covered over 3.7 lakh people across the country, also highlighted a dip in the labor force participation rate or LFPR.

[00:00:54]The overall participation rate fell to 55% down from 55.6% a year ago. Gender-specific data shows a mixed bag. Male unemployment stood at 5.1% while female unemployment was recorded at 5.4% a 0.4 percentage point increase compared to April 2025.

[00:01:17]Notably, while urban female participation showed broad stability, the overall female labor force participation saw a marginal year-on-year decline.

[00:01:27]The worker population ratio also saw a slight contraction falling to 52.2% from 52.8% the previous year.
