Lawrence provides a lucid breakdown of the technical architecture behind the melody, transforming a subjective listening experience into a masterclass on atmospheric design. It is a rare, intellectually satisfying look at the deliberate craftsmanship within modern game scores.

Music Composer Reacts - Vernal Days Dreamed by the Star (Wuthering Waves)
Added:Can I just say, before I even react to this, the name of this track is really pretty. Vernal Days Dreamed by the Star.
I'm Corey from Everything Fancy. I'm a video game composer, and today we're going to be analyzing more music from Wuthering Waves. I have my keyboard in front of me.
Let's get into this.
I see the link that somebody pointed me to in my website everythingfancy.net um was the lyric video. So, now I know this has lyrics. Let's get into this.
>> [music] >> Before we get into this, that was sort of like a really bad place to pause it, but anyway, um things that I find really interesting here.
>> [music] >> We're in a It feels like we're in A major key. Obviously, this could change.
Uh and it sounds like we are in B flat major.
I think it was that kind of This sounds really pretty so far. And I see a fresh wash of sunlight. Um if I had to get Let's do a vocal guess here. I'm imagining soft, quiet, delicate-sounding female vocalist.
Um probably an F or something like that as a starting note.
Okay, I'm going I'm going wild with these predictions. Let's go.
>> [music] >> Oh my gosh, I got the note right. Sorry.
I got the note right. It was an F.
There was a bunch of things I didn't get right though, but the key changed.
Actually in uh F minor.
I think I changed the key, but we have I think I also had a bass guitar as well come in kind of like a >> [music] [music] >> I'm sort of predicting the chord sequence, but I'm getting this by the way. You might be wondering how I did some of this stuff. To me, it's very much the name of the song, the opening chords, and kind of the lyrics as well kind of give me a picture of what I think this is going to sound like.
>> [music] [music and singing] [singing] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> There's a few things I find really cool about this.
The chord sequence I'm finding slightly unpredictable. Like I wasn't expecting to go >> [music] >> I was expecting to go >> [music] [music] >> It's really interesting. I almost feel like um feeling-wise, I'm getting very optimistic. Through nightmares to the break of dawn though, the pros and cons of life.
Although the music sounds very optimistic, I'm not necessarily getting that from the lyrics.
>> [singing] [music] [music] >> Okay, we have a link and we're probably going to go into another verse.
That's the kind of the rhythm we have.
You might be interested to know instrument-wise, um electric guitar, vocals, background vocals, which don't sound as innocent as I was expecting it to sound based on the name alone.
Um there's of course a few layers of synthesizers.
Um they're quite fizzy sounding, quite electronic sounding.
Um and was there anything else I didn't say?
Maybe bass guitar, drum kit. I probably said one of those already.
Um but I'm It's hard to know what to make of this so far. I think I need more information.
Acoustic guitar.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> profusely [singing] walking >> Okay, I need to go back to that. Um I smiled because I I'm I I just enjoy a string build-up like that. Where the strings kind of just gradually warming the piece up sort of thing. Um The other thing that I found pretty cool about that section was just the the electric guitar. I think there was an acoustic as well that was really really quiet strumming every single beat.
That's the thing that helps it feels like we're pulsating and moving, which is why the word that comes to mind listening to this so far is journey.
Journey and potentially discovery as well.
>> [singing] [music] [music] [music] [music and singing] [music] [music] >> So we have a bridge section. We're probably going to go um if I'm correcting the approach here of the this piece of music is going to be a bridge followed by a restricted chorus. I probably need a better name for it, but it's a chorus where something is missing, like uh like the drum kit, for example, or a bass, and then we go into a bigger version of the chorus. We'll see if that manifests.
But, the other thing I wanted to say as well is uh this is going to be such a niche reference. I don't I thought it was going to be one person in the com- and one of you guys watching who will know what I mean, but only one person.
There's a game called Final Fantasy 13-3 or Lightning's Returns. Um and at the very end of it, there's some I'm not going to spoil it. I don't know if anyone's going to play it or anything, but there's something significant that happens, and it's kind of like something is reborn sort of thing. I'm getting that kind of feeling. I'm sort of imagining the scene in my head, but I'm getting the idea of something coming to life and kind of being reborn, almost like a after a long, hard-fought battle.
The battle is over, and now something new has kind of sprung from it. That's the feel I get from this. So, but structure-wise, I was thinking bridge, which this is, followed by a restricted version of the chorus, and then a bigger version of the chorus.
>> [music] >> I like that song.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Music production nerd in me wants to say I really love the reverb on the snare drum, not too excessive, but just gave enough tail for it to sound quite expensive and open. Oh, that's such a great piece of music. I I feel like I need to keep like some separate list for myself of pieces of music I want to revisit and check if they're on Spotify and everything. Um, that's such a great piece of music. I really enjoyed that.
Like um Okay, I did I I got the the the restricted chorus thing wrong, but um there wasn't a second chorus followed by the post-chorus and then the outro. And I just I just I just love the simplicity of this. There's nothing excessive besides maybe the kind of the the pluck synth sounds and arpeggiated synth sounds and everything. But anyway, um I really love the feel for this. I kind of I really do get a sense of something being born anew sort of thing. Um Vernal days dreamed by a star.
I don't I'll say I can't interpret too much from that, but the word dream is coming it is is quite strongly kind of evoking images in my head of of really something being born anew or kind of wishing for something that that manifests in a way.
I'm really curious of what the people that sent it if they said anything about it. Okay, so one person who submitted this song via everythingfantasy.net and you can submit things too there.
Um and write write write a comment as well. I'd love to know your thoughts about it so I can read it after. But I've seen something really interesting about this. A song that that left this game's fans in tears for months on end.
I can hear that. I I I I would be in tears listening to this in game. The specific cutscene version of this that plays after um and Eef's like I don't know the how to pronounce the name, but tragic backstory in 3.1 uses this song. If you don't mind spoilers, I suggest catching up on their story in 3.1.
Which will also help you feel the emotional impact in the cutscene specific Homecoming Star from the Unbound. Someone else recommended that's on my list of things to react to. Wait, actually.
I'll feel the emotional impact of the cutscene specific 3.3 Homecoming Star.
I'm pretty sure that's a song that is literally on my list of things that I picked to react to next.
Um cool. Next Waifu Ring Rift reaction that I'm literally going to do almost immediately after this is Homecoming Star from the Unbound. So, I'm curious of how things compare.
But, as always, thanks for watching and take care.
