Narcissists are not powerful or dominant but are profoundly dependent on external emotional reactions from others to maintain their fragile sense of self; when they encounter someone who remains calm, grounded, and non-reactive, their manipulation tactics escalate (projection, gaslighting, blameshifting, silent treatment, triangulation, hoovering) before eventually failing, leading to withdrawal, because their entire psychological structure collapses without the supply of emotional reactions they depend on.
