Attempting To Fix The £6800 EV Myself!
Added:Well, that was easy. Volkswagen wanted a thousand pounds to sort this problem out. This is where it go. Oh, look at that there.
Let's keep our fingers crossed, guys.
This is the Volkswagen ID.3 I bought just a week ago for 6,800 pounds. It cost me 200 pounds to get it towed here because it's got no MOT. But the reason it was so cheap is because the advert said it wouldn't charge. When I delved into it a bit deeper and asked them questions, they basically said they couldn't charge the car. That's all I knew. In the previous video, I discovered that the charge port door wouldn't open.
Now, that could be what's at fault here.
That that could be the problem. That they just couldn't open the door to charge it. However, it could mean that that's a problem or that's occurred since and they can't charge it as well.
So basically, once I get the door open, if I can, it's still got a charge problem.
But first, I need to get that stuck door. I've tried absolutely everything from the manual operation to the key fob to inside the car. Everything at all.
Nothing will get it open.
So, I'm going to try and do it myself now with some cheap Amazon tools, a YouTube video cuz I'm a man, um and no help at all from anyone who's absolutely any good at this. No specialist. I'm going to try and fix it myself.
So, please do subscribe because then you can watch next video where I take it to Volkswagen or a specialist and get charged thousands of pounds to fix something I've really knackered up.
Before I go any further, there is another fault that I've spotted. So, let me spin the camera around and I don't want it to fail an MOT. I'm not sure this would affect the MOT, but it's coming in with a fault. I need to sort out that. The port is the big one. That that's, I think, the potential to be really expensive. But this also needs to be sorted out and I'm not entirely sure what it is at this stage cuz I haven't Googled it, which is all I'm capable of doing. If I put it in reverse for a second.
Please clean front parking sensor. And you'll notice there's an exclamation mark there and the front left sensor, I think it is, um, that one is what it thinks is dirty.
Clean sensors. This car This car is spotless at the front. I've made sure of that. So, I could only assume we have a faulty sensor. Now, if I can get it to come back again.
That is probably not an MOT failure, but I want to make sure. There you go.
I've just spoke to Volkswagen to find out how much it might cost to take this to them. So, basically I said, "I can't get the charge port, door open.
How much to fix that?"
And they said, "Well, it's a common issue and if it is what we think it is, it's about 400 450 pounds."
I also asked them about the sensor at the front.
That, again, not uncommon. Probably something hit the sensor, damaged sensor.
That's about 450 pounds as well.
So, we're looking at about 900 pounds worth of repair bills if I take it to Volkswagen. And that's before we even factor in that I don't know if it actually charges as well, which could be mega bucks. I mean, if if getting a door open and fixing that is 450 quid, what the hell would something significant be?
So, you can see here, here, here, these little indents of plastic. That basically tells me where this these are clipped in. So, this entire assembly is clipped in here, here, here, here, here.
So, I'm going to use my cheap as I could find Amazon tools to pry this out and hopefully the whole assembly will come off and I can get to the lock behind it. Um, or I'll end up destroying this entire assembly and I'll have to spend a lot of money replacing it. But, you know, let's give it a shot, eh?
>> [clears throat] >> Oh, look at that.
There we go.
Come on.
That's another one.
Ooh, can see daylight.
Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on.
I can see the charge port.
This is the lock, I'm guessing.
The one that isn't working.
So, if I unplug that, unscrew this, Oh.
Perfect.
This is where I go, "Oh, look at that there."
Right. So, I've got my set that I used to take laptops and PCs and servers apart and so forth. So, surely an electric car should be fine.
And what type are we looking for here?
Oh, look at that. First time.
There we go.
Plug off.
Come on. Stiff. Stiff. Stiff. Stiff.
Loosening. Loosening. Loosening. There we go.
That's the lock off. How the hell do I get it unlocked from itself?
>> [laughter] >> Oh, look at that.
I think that's the culprit. And we got a Volkswagen part number.
There's a Volkswagen dealer just down the road from me.
So, maybe I'm going to order one. I doubt they've got one in stock. Right. Now, let's do the primary reason for taking this thing off. Fixing it is a good thing. We can do that later, but I need to see if this thing charges.
I don't want to plug it back in so I have to take it all back out again. I just need to get that round there. Come on.
I can give this a good clean as well, so Right.
That obviously won't do anything now, so I just need to see if it charges.
Just one slight issue.
Charger there, door there.
>> [laughter] >> I'm going to have to spin it round.
Will it charge? Come on.
This could be three, maybe even four-figure difference if it does.
So, that's green. Come on. Come on. Come on.
It's charging.
Cur cha ching. Just do me do me do me do with the camera. Guys, I did a thing. Leo, I did a thing. I fixed it. No, come back. Come back. This is my triumph.
>> [laughter] >> You beauty.
Oh, I'm so chuffed. And now, I've had a look and the actuator is like 35 quid.
It's not a lot. Uh, I don't know if I'm Volkswagen and that's just like eBay a genuine part. So, if it's like 35, 50 quid, and there's an even bigger bonus. Check this.
In the boot, look what I found.
This is for future me to worry about. I just need that to leave that. In fact, you know what? I'm going to stop it charging now so it can charge cheaply overnight. Why am I wasting energy right now? Can we get this under 7 and 1/2 grand budget?
That's a belter. Come on. Right, I'll I'll stop this now cuz it's wasting money. Come on.
Uh, lock lock her up, and then I can start to try and get this damn thing off. Does it just pull off?
You're kidding.
Oh, that was easy.
I fixed something.
Come here. Come to daddy. I fixed it. I fixed it. Well done, daddy. Bye-bye.
Uh.
Sorry, Leo. Right, so I'm assuming it's this sensor that it's complaining about. It's definitely not dirty.
But, that's what I need to try and maybe remove and I I imagine replace.
I don't know if I can somehow get to this and take it out and replace it, that might be an easy fix. Come on, so put me on. You can reach behind it.
Try to see if there's any clips.
Oh, come on.
Come on.
There's clips that I just can't [clears throat] >> [laughter] >> There she is.
All right.
There we go.
God, God, that was hard.
Um Right, well nothing obvious. There's no cable damage. So, Volkswagen wanted 450 lb for that remember. The part has finally arrived.
And spot the difference.
>> [laughter] >> I think we can see what's happened there. So, that's what it should do.
Common issue, I believe. So, let's get this fit.
Right.
There we go.
Easy to pull out. Plug it in.
Come on. There we go.
Right.
Let's put it back in place.
Let's lock it.
Car's locked.
Yep.
Yep.
Unlocked.
Hey!
I'm a happy chappie now.
Yeah, man.
And those are going on there.
Come on. Come on. Come There we have it.
Fixed.
The other part has arrived.
And you can probably see there that that's nice and smooth. That's pitted.
That's got damage.
And that's probably why this isn't working.
Uh but I expected to get it with the part, but you don't. There's a rubber part to there which we're going to have to transfer to the new one. And in theory, I just need to Come on.
Find the cables. Should be just plug and play in theory.
There we go.
Right.
So, see if that's worked.
Okay.
Let's keep our fingers crossed, guys.
Let's uh put it into reverse.
Nope. That's drive.
We have no exclamation mark.
I think we've done it.
It's not saying clean the sensors anymore that it said before.
Driving the car will get rid of that.
Which I can't do cuz it's got no MOT at the moment.
Come on! I've actually fixed two things now. I'm two for two.
Um now you might think I'm a little overjoyed over fixing something which is clearly not that complex, but A, I'm no mechanic and B, remember Volkswagen wanted, if I had an MOT onto that, not that far off a thousand pounds to fix.
Volkswagen wanted a thousand pounds to sort this problem out.
And I managed to do it for, well, if I had the MOT cost on, which it hasn't had yet, uh less than 200.
That's why I'm overjoyed because so far I am well under my seven and a half thousand pounds budget. In fact, what am I at at the moment? 680 for the car, 200 to get it here on a low loader. Um let's call it 200 pounds including the MOT and the parts and everything. Well, it's a bit less than that.
Uh so, 7,200.
But it hasn't passed the MOT yet, so that's the next step. I haven't driven this yet other than swapping it around on the drive. I haven't [clears throat] driven the car yet.
So, I'm really looking forward to that.
Now, um it's been canceled, so it's in a few days is the MOT.
Um and uh I think it's probably time to call this video and come back in the next one because that's how YouTube works.
Given the potential risk of financial risk of this car to the channel, uh I I need to drag it out a little bit. This is This is how it works, isn't it? Um so, please do subscribe so you find out if it uh passes the MOT and then the first drive of the ID.3. It's not that exciting.
There's no pop pop bang bang exhaust or anything like that to do.
But it does need a thorough cleaning. I mean, a proper clean. This is acky.
It's got that vape oil sort of, you know, residue everywhere, which I I just That's what I assume it is. There's no smell here, thankfully, uh apart from that kind of sweet smell, but I'll be getting the ozone generator out and I'll be using my ex-professional detailer skills to sort that out. If you want to watch the give it a thorough clean video should we say, which won't be that exciting, then that will be on the second channel, which is the driving home channel. That's linked in the description of every video I do on this one. So, please do go over to that channel cuz if you like this, you'll probably like that. It's It's kind of little videos, you know, smaller videos and and behind the scenes stuff.
Hopefully then it will be either how much it's cost me to repair to get it through its MOT or it's just passed.
And the fact it's uh it's not got the MOT at the moment means I can't really tell. I mean everything feels really tight and and solid.
There's no rattles, but there's only so much you can tell driving on and off or around the driveway. If you want to become a member for 99 p a month, that helps me take risks like this.
Because if if this was a I don't know, like a proper charging fault, you know, the inverter or the cabling, we'd become we'd be in four figures. If two sensors Well, not one sensor and the door thing, the lock, was going to cost nearly a thousand pounds with the dealer, then something major would be thousands potentially. So, it is a risk, but I have to do on YouTube what no one else wants to do really. Otherwise, it wouldn't be that interesting. Not that it is as we stand. So, yeah. Please do subscribe for I don't know.
I think I've trapped it in the door.
I'm just going to go now. It's been a very long day. So again, thanks for watching. See you soon, guys.
Jesus.
There we go.
>> [laughter] >> What an idiot.
