Energy-producing nations must prioritize economic resilience over environmental ambition when diversifying their energy portfolios, as demonstrated by Malaysia's Petronas expanding into renewable energy (9.1 GW portfolio), clean hydrogen production (175 kilotons annually), and carbon capture technology to reduce vulnerability to geopolitical shocks and oil price volatility.

Petronas driving Malaysia’s energy resilience amid geopolitical shocks本站添加:
Geopolitical tensions and sharp swings in global oil prices are forcing countries to rethink how they secure their energy future. Oil and gas analyst Jamei says even energy producing nations like Malaysia are not immune to these volatilities. Jamil says diversification today must be viewed through the lens of economic resilience rather than just environmental ambition. Malaysia has long depended on hydrocarbons to support its economy, but efforts are now underway to broaden the country's energy mix. According to Jamal, Petronas has been central to this transition, expanding beyond oil and gas into cleaner and alternative energy sources.
Its renewable energy arm, Gentari, has already built a 9.1 gawatt global renewable energy and storage portfolio as of late last year. Hydronas is also moving into newer energy sectors, including plans to produce about 175 kilotons of clean hydrogen annually.
Last year, the company secured Malaysia's first offshore carbon capture and storage assessment permit at the Duyong Field. Petronas is also working together with the Naga National Burhad to upgrade Malaysia's renewable energy grid infrastructure, a critical move in supporting the country's energy transition. Jamil says Malaysia's policy direction is broadly on track, but delays in approvals, coordination issues, and commercialization hurdles continue to slow progress. As global energy uncertainty persists, Malaysia's push towards diversification must not be a mere environmental transition, but a strategy for long-term economic resilience.
