Aircraft landing gear systems require careful design and maintenance to prevent catastrophic failures; design flaws such as closely positioned holes in downlock assemblies can lead to incorrect pin installation, which may cause unexpected gear retraction or collapse, highlighting the importance of following service bulletins and airworthiness directives to ensure aircraft safety.

Lufthansa 787-9 Dreamliner Nose Gear Collapse! AIR Distress #aviationnews #aviationAdded:
Holy moly, this is absolutely mind-blowing to see the nose gear collapse on this Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner from Lufthansa. This just happened today in Frankfurt, Germany while the Boeing was parked at the gate.
It is not known whether maintenance work was in progress or the jet had technical issues from the previous leg.
The damage to the aircraft is significant as seen on the footage and the pictures. Damage to the lower forward portion of the fuselage, the cargo door, and even the engines had ground contact. The Lufthansa Dreamliner landed yesterday on the 3rd of June with flight number LH469 servicing Austin, Texas to Frankfurt, Germany.
While the root cause is obviously still totally open, I would like to raise a similar incident from 2021 when a nose gear collapsed on a British Airways Boeing 787-800 while standing at the gate.
Even though comparing the two incidents with each other is not my intention, I found it quite interesting to gather all the info about the BA nose gear collapse to see what the root cause was back in 2021.
The final report states ground maintenance team was working on three-fold messages associated with the nose landing gear doors. According to the dispatch deviation guide, the issues could be deferred to a later date providing the landing gear was recycled to confirm the nose landing gear doors would function normally.
To prevent the landing gear from retracting when the gear lever was moved into the gear up position, the landing gear down lock pins were installed.
However, when the engineer moved the gear lever into the gear up position, the nose gear retracted anyway.
Further investigations revealed that the nose gear pin was inadvertently inserted in the down lock link assembly apex pin bore instead of the down lock pin hole as seen on this picture. The 787 nose landing gear downlock assembly design was not ideal with two holes close to each other. At the time, a service bulletin and an airworthiness directive was available to prevent this, but had not yet been completed on this particular 787.
This has probably nothing to do with the nose gear collapse on the Lufthansa 787, but I found it interesting to raise the issues with the gear pins anyway. Let's see what the investigators find out.
