Stop thinking about prices in dollars and start thinking about them in your life hours #shortsAdded:
Stop thinking about price in dollars and start thinking about them in your life hours. I want to teach you one idea that will completely change how you relate to money.
It takes about 30 seconds to understand and it will quietly rewind how you make spending decisions for the rest of your life. Ready?
I'm Catherine, a former Bay Street advisor, now independent financial planner. I share the money habits that create financial peace. The idea is stop thinking about price in dollars and start thinking about them in hours. Not vaguely, specifically.
Take your after-tax hourly rate and convert every purchase into time it costs you. That $200 jacket isn't $200.
If you make 25 an hour after tax, it's 8 hours of your life.
That dinner isn't 120, it's nearly 5 hours. Your brain processes time differently than it processes money and suddenly spending feels very different. This isn't about being cheap or turning every purchase into anxiety.
It's about making the trade-off visible.
Because right now the trade-off is invisible. When you tap your card, the number leaves and your brain doesn't fully register what just happening. What was exchanged? When you convert to hours, you're forced to ask, "Was the dinner worth 5 hours of my time?"
Is that subscription worth 2 hours every month? Sometimes yes, absolutely. But sometimes the honest answer change your decision.
So try this for 1 week.
Calculate your real after-tax hourly rate.
Take your monthly take-home and divide it by hours that you before any purchase over $50 converted to hours and ask if you would make that trade consciously.
Notice which purchase still worth it and which one suddenly feel very different.
Money it just store time. Spend it like you know that.
Comment freedom and I will send you the link to my personal finance online course.
