The Weirdest Chord That Creates The Perfect Resolution

[00:00:06]A toucan is a toucan for you. Hello everyone, good morning, come welcome, come welcome to here. Welcome in, come on in. I'm going to show you a creative different way that you can use to resolve back to your one chord. And so typically we would use the five chord of a key as either a major or dominant seven to resolve back to the one. But we're going to hang that that guy on the little stove and we're going to get a little more spicy. Today I'm going to show you how to use that chord you never thought a million years you'd ever use.

[00:00:33]And so which chord is it? Sorry, I got a little tired. I'll just tell you what it is. It's the fully diminished seventh chord, okay? And not only the fully diminished seventh chord, it's the fully diminished seventh chord of our seven chord of a key. Let me explain. And so the seventh chord of a major key is a diminished chord, right? Or a half diminished seventh if we play it as a seventh version. Are you moving?

[00:00:57]But we're not going to play it as a half diminished seventh. No, we're going to play it as a fully diminished seventh.

[00:01:01]And the difference between a half diminished and a fully diminished, okay, is that in a fully diminished the seventh degree is flattened twice. Don't forget soccer practice is not an excuse to miss lunch. Okay, so why would we do that?

[00:01:18]Why would we do that then? If we're playing in a major key and the seven chord is a half diminished seventh, why would we then play it as a fully diminished seventh? Shouldn't that not work?

[00:01:27]I got off the second, I got restless.

[00:01:28]And that's a great question. I want you to be proud of that one, okay? But first let me play you that progression. So we're going to do this in the key of A major, right? And the seventh degree of A major is G sharp, right? Meaning we're going to play the G sharp fully diminished seventh chord to resolve to our A major chord. So let's do that, okay? Here it is.

[00:01:57]Natalie! And all I did here was just walk down to the G sharp fully diminished seventh.

[00:02:03]That's all. And so, let's compare that for comparison reference to the regular typical resolution progression we'd play, which would be the five leading to the one. Okay, so let's do that.

[00:02:17]Let's play back-to-back now.

[00:02:24]Yeah. And so, you hear how that fully diminished seventh chord still has a lot of tension, [music] tension, tension that resolves back to the one?

[00:02:34]But it's still a little bit spicier and funner than that typical five chord.

[00:02:39]If you go to the grocery store right now, you pick up a corn shuck, you peel it, you take the corn, you put it on the roaster, put some butter on it, you got yourself a delicious lunch. And so, now back to your previous question.

[00:02:58]What was your previous question? Why does this specific tension resolution progression work if it's not the five chord of the key nor the true seven chord? Well, here's the answer.

[00:03:08]Well, there's two answers. Okay. The first answer being that this fully diminished seventh seven chord is the five chord. Oh, yes. And so, let's break that down, okay? So, on the screen right now, we have our notes, okay, that make up our G sharp fully diminished seven chord. And those notes are the G sharp, B, D, and F note. But I want you to notice something. These notes here, okay, are the upper structure of the E dominant seven flat nine chord. All we'd have to do to turn it into an E dominant seven flat nine chord is add an E note in the base of this chord, okay? And so, that G sharp, okay, a fully diminished seven, all right, acts as a rootless five chord. Oh, yeah. And that might be a bit confusing because how does this chord act as the E chord as the five but when it doesn't even have an E note in it? What the heck does that mean? Well, here's the thing, okay? That is when harmonic context comes into play, okay?

[00:04:07]Because this chord technically is the G sharp fully diminished seventh chord.

[00:04:12]But because we are in the key of A major, playing that chord in the context of A major signals to our ear again, that we are playing the five-chord because of how similar those two chords are. Let's put that into context, okay?

[00:04:25]So, let me play you back-to-back the G sharp fully diminished seventh chord, okay? And then the E dominant seventh flat nine chord, okay? We're going to hear just how similar they sound.

[00:04:37]Yeah, it's a stupid little chord. It's hard to play, but you hear how similar it is? Everyone in the world is everywhere.

[00:04:46]Everyone in the world is somewhere.

[00:04:51]Everyone in the world is anywhere for us.

[00:04:56]We need a going be everywhere.

[00:05:01]All together now, everyone in the world.

[00:05:04]And so, now what about that flat nine though, okay? E dominant seven, I understand that, okay? It's the five of A major, but what's the it flat nine about? What's that about? Well, that's what gives it that spiciness. That's what makes it different.

[00:05:17]Yeah.

[00:05:18]Okay? So, here's the thing.

[00:05:21]Can't I just play an E dominant seventh flat nine chord then?

[00:05:24]To resolve to the one? Why do we have to go through all that mumble jumble? Can't I just play the E dominant seventh flat nine chord? Well, I mean, yeah, you could. But you saw how freaking weird that stupid little chord was. You don't want to play that. Let me tell you, you try that right now, you don't want to play it. You would much rather just play the G sharp Okay? So, again, if ever you want to just do that, all you have to do is look at the seventh chord of a major key, play it as a fully diminished seventh, and then use it to resolve to the one. [00:08:57]He was a ghost and he lived in the 17th century castle farms of Alabama. What he would do is he would go into the towns and he would terrorize the local marketers.

[00:09:11]Who were the market ficients? They would sell pottery bowls, little uh weaved things that you you use to put your hot pots on so it doesn't burn your counter tops. He was a ghost and he would go there. What he would do is he would knock over the pottery pots and bowls. He would take those weave pot heater protectors. He would put them all over the ground and stomp on them.

[00:09:45]Then he would take them put them back.

[00:09:53]And all the marketers at one point had a a a a meeting that they called the council. And at the council they would talk about the ghost, of course, terrorizing their entire markets. And they would say, "What are we going to do about this?" So, what they ended up doing is they just moved.

[00:10:13]They just moved. They packed up. They moved uh because ghosts apparently only have a range of about 50 ft.

[00:10:23]Radiation. They ended up being very successful. They were very successful.

[00:10:27]They moved into the outskirts of the town nearby. It was called uh um Joy.

[00:10:37]And they loved it there. They had uh lots of trees uh they that would grow I apricots and they'd make jam, pies, and then they would sell those at the markets as well.
