This story illustrates that people should not judge others based on initial impressions or hearsay, but rather give them opportunities to demonstrate their true character. When Patrick initially believed Ned was 'no use at all' based on Max and Monty's negative reports, he was proven wrong when Ned helped him escape a dangerous mudslide during a rainstorm. The story teaches that even rocky beginnings can lead to lasting friendships, and that patience and understanding are essential for building meaningful relationships within a team.

"Any sight of Thomas yet?" asked Alfie.
"Not yet." said Jack. "He might arrive any minute."
Jack and Alfie were excited. Thomas was bringing a new arrival to join the pack.
"It's been years since we had someone new to join our team." smiled Jack.
"Yes." agreed Alfie. "Maybe the new arrival could be another excavator."
"Or another front loader." smiled Jack.
Kelly and Byron overheard Jack and Alfie and had to laugh.
"Some good choices." Kelly said. "And you'll get your answer soon enough cuz here comes Thomas."
Thomas arrived at the construction site and on his flatbed was the new arrival.
"You two are incorrect." chuckled Byron.
"She's a brand new bulldozer. About time too. We need another one."
"Do we though?" grumbled Max.
"Look on the bright side. It'll be fun to boss her around." sniggered Monty.
"You better not." scolded Isabella.
"Settle down please." said Miss Jenny.
"This is Brenda. Byron, I want you to show her the ropes please." "Yes, ma'am." smiled Byron.
Brenda proved that she was a fast learner and quickly adapted to the team's dynamics.
Just like the rest of the machines, Brenda took a big dislike to Max and Monty due to their tomfoolery.
Still, whenever dealing with Max and Monty, Byron or Kelly would tell Brenda to keep calm and carry on.
And that's what she did.
The next day, the pack were starting work on a new restaurant [music] at Lower Suddery.
All was going well until Ned swung his bucket and hit Monty.
"Watch it, bumble bucket!" shouted Monty. "Sorry." Ned said weakly.
"It's baffling that you're still part of the pack!" snarled Monty. "You should have been sent away in disgrace!"
Brenda was watching close by, and she was cross. "Excuse me!
That's no way to speak to anyone.
Instead of being horrid, we should support each other and work together as a team." "Stay out of my business, newbie. You'll soon realize that old bumble bucket here is no use at all."
"Really? I see Ned as a useful steam shovel."
Monty gulped. Miss Jenny was right in front of him and heard everything. "M- Miss Jenny." Monty said nervously. "Uh I I believe you're done for today."
scolded Miss Jenny. "You will return to the yard right now." "Yes, Miss Jenny.
Sorry, Miss Jenny." said Monty.
"Thank you for defending me." smiled Ned.
"Anytime, Ned." Brenda said. "Monty was out of line. Some time alone in the yard might teach him a lesson."
Just then, the foreman called out, "Ned, fill up Max." "Coming, sir." Ned said cheerfully.
Later, Brenda was telling Patrick and Isabella all about Monty. "I think it's disgraceful." grumbled Brenda. "Talking rubbish about Ned like that. The nerve of him."
"Monty and Max sure like to test everyone's patience." admitted Patrick.
"Always playing their reckless games and getting in trouble." sighed Isabella.
"But they do care about their work."
"Um sometimes." added Patrick. "As for Ned, he has his fair share of accidents.
Still, he's a dependable member of the pack."
"When you first met him, you thought HE WAS A" "ISABELLA!" interrupted Patrick.
"From the sounds of it, you and Ned didn't get along very well." said Brenda.
Patrick looked very shamefaced.
"We didn't at first."
"Please tell me the whole story." Brenda pleaded. "Right now? We're in the middle of working and" "We have time now." laughed Isabella.
"Go on, Patrick. Tell her."
"It's something that I'm not proud of."
Patrick began. "And this is what happened."
It was the end of a busy summer day. The pack returned to the yard after demolishing some old sheds. [music] "You're a good crew." smiled Miss Jenny.
"Now for some big news. Tomorrow morning, a new cement mixer will be joining our team." "Oh, boy." beamed Ned.
"Glad it's not another half pint." Max said to himself.
He's just what we need to join our team, said Miss Jenny.
Bright and early the next morning, Thomas arrived at Brendam Docks to pick up the new arrival.
Morning, Cranky.
Thomas, it's too early to be cheerful, grumbled Cranky. Sorry, Cranky. I'm just excited to meet the new arrival.
Well, here he is, cranked Cranky. Meet Patrick.
Cranky carefully lifted Patrick off the ship and placed him on the flatbed.
Away we go, said Thomas.
Miss Jenny was waiting patiently and in no time Thomas arrived with Patrick.
When Patrick was unloaded, Miss Jenny greeted him warmly. Welcome to the pack, Patrick. The rest of the machines are at the warehouse right now. When they return, you could get acquainted with them. Certainly, Miss Jenny, smiled Patrick.
Soon enough, the other machines had returned from the warehouse. They all introduced themselves.
Patrick instinctively felt at home and was confident he'd fit right in.
But when he was talking to Oliver, Max and Monty were planning something.
So, what do you think of him?
Monty asked quietly.
He's just like everyone else, scoffed Max. Too boring, unlike us.
Shall we have fun with him? chuckled Monty. Well, of course, snickered Monty.
We lay low for now, then we'll make our move.
>> [laughter] >> That afternoon, Patrick was at Knapford pouring concrete for a new sidewalk.
A small job for my first day on the island.
Stirring, it's a fine work of art, he boasted.
When the job was complete, he was on his way back to the yard.
Down the road, Oliver and Ned were working on the foundations for new houses.
Can you load us up any quicker? grumbled Monty.
Rushing won't do any good if we want to ensure everything is done right.
>> [clears throat] >> Oliver said firmly. Some of us have better things to do than wait around here, snapped Max.
Oliver and Ned carried on with their work.
Patrick was about to pass them and honked his horn.
This startled Ned so much that he dropped his load of dirt on the top of Max.
You idiot! coughed Max. S- Sorry, Max, Ned said nervously.
Can't you get through one day without being so useless?
Max, lay off, Oliver said crossly.
What's the matter, Max? teased Monty. I thought you like to PLAY DIRTY.
>> [laughter] >> SHUT UP, GROWLED MAX.
Max was still furious when he and Monty were heading back to the yard.
Why do we keep him around if he can't do even the simplest tasks without messing up? Max vented.
Every time he's given a job to do, something has to go wrong, agreed Monty.
We're better off without him. A waste of space, added Max.
It took some time to clean Max. He was trying to think of a plan to get back at Ned.
Nothing but a headache he is, Max said to himself, always fumbling up and making things worse.
Then, Monty pulled alongside.
I had to get away from that newcomer, he said crossly. He wouldn't stop rambling about concrete.
Great, another annoyance we have to deal with, grumbled Max. What next? A steamroller thinks he's fast?
It's like we're surrounded by incompetence, complained Monty.
Exactly, it's getting unbearable. There needs to be more machines like us, no more goody-goodies, agreed Max.
More blunderers, concluded Monty.
The next day, all the machines were gathering for the morning briefing. Ned was feeling groggy.
Then, there was trouble. Ned accidentally rammed the back of Patrick.
Oops, exclaimed Ned. Hey, easy there, scolded Patrick. It's only my second day. You don't want to send me to the repair shop already, do you?
Certainly not, replied Ned.
Ooh, he didn't like that at all, did he?
Smirked Max.
Not one bit, grinned Monty.
When no one was looking, Max and Monty drove up to Patrick. Say, Patrick, do you have a minute? Asked Max.
Um, I do, said Patrick. We have to apologize, frowned Monty.
Apologize for what?
For Ned, said Monty.
From the very beginning, Ned has been a loose cannon, always crashing into things and causing trouble.
He destroyed a bridge, damaged the shed, the list goes on, added Max.
But accidents happen every now and then, Patrick replied cautiously. True, but for Ned, he has an accident every single day, said Monty.
We thought you should know so you can watch out for him, especially since you're still new here.
You can say that Ned is no use at all, stated Max.
Max and Monty drove away.
Patrick didn't know what to say.
Right, everyone, as Jenny said, another busy day.
Isabella, you have to pick up a load of bricks and take them to Knapford. Jack and Alfie, I need you to head over to Tidmouth. A truck lost his load of soil and the road needs clearing before it causes any more disruption. The rest of you, on to Merrick. You lot will be working on the foundations for the new art museum.
Time to get to work, and remember, safety first, said the machines.
As the machines set off on their tasks, Patrick couldn't shake off the uneasy feeling from his conversation with Max and Monty.
I think for now, I shouldn't worry about it.
At the site, Oliver and Ned were hard at work digging and loading up Max and Monty.
Patrick [music] was waiting for his turn to join in the work. As he waited, the words from Max and Monty kept echoing in his mind.
Could they be right about Ned? Patrick wondered. They've known him from the start.
Patrick decided to observe Ned more closely before making any judgments.
Do you see how nervous Patrick looks?
like grinned.
>> [laughter] >> Shaking like a leaf in the wind."
chuckled Max.
Patrick decided to pull alongside Ned.
"Is there something I can do for you?"
asked Ned. "Don't mind me." Patrick said cautiously. "Carry on with your digging."
So Ned did.
Suddenly, Ned accidentally swung his bucket too widely, knocking over sacks of cement, almost hitting Patrick.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I" Before Ned could finish, Patrick slowly drove away from Ned.
Ned felt embarrassed.
"Break time everyone." called the foreman.
Max drove up to Patrick.
"I hope you see my point." he whispered.
During break time, Patrick was thinking about what had happened earlier.
"Max is making his point loud and clear." he thought. "But I'll observe more carefully before siding with anyone to ensure I understand all perspectives."
"Not too much tension between Ned and Patrick." grumbled Monty. "Don't worry."
smirked Max. "All they need is a little push."
Break time was over. Ned and Oliver were gearing up to resume digging.
Patrick was keeping a closer watch on Ned.
"Okay, time for us to make our next move." grinned Monty. "Agreed." smirked Max. "Ready? Go!"
Ned just scooped up a big load of dirt when Max and Monty raced by Ned as fast as they could.
The sudden rush startled Ned, so he swung his bucket around and accidentally hit Patrick.
"Ouch!" yelled Patrick. "Oh, Patrick, I didn't mean to." Ned stammered. That was the last straw for Patrick. "Watch where you're swinging that thing, you lummox!"
shouted Patrick. Ned looked hurt.
"Lummox?
You ran into me earlier this morning, knocked over the sacks of cement, and now this!"
"I'm truly sorry. Let me find a way to make it up to you." pleaded Ned.
"Why would I trust someone WHO'S NO USE AT ALL?" BELLOWED PATRICK. "PATRICK!"
boomed Oliver. "A word, now."
Patrick drove away while Ned sadly went back to digging.
Max and Monty were watching close by, and they smirked with triumph.
"What is wrong with you?" Oliver asked crossly. "If you've got a problem with Ned, sort it out calmly instead of causing a scene. Maybe I wouldn't have to cause a scene if he didn't whack me in the face. He's dead weight."
"Dead weight? Listen to me. If there's one thing I know about Ned that he has a big heart and he genuinely cares about others. If you give him a chance, you might understand him better."
"Oliver, I've been observing Ned all morning. Also, Max and Monty told me."
"Told you what?" Oliver asked suspiciously. "Oh, well," Patrick began. "They told me that Oh, look, I think the foreman needs me."
And he hurried away.
"Uh-huh, sure he does." grumbled Oliver.
"I ought to know that Max and Monty are behind this.
The foreman had some urgent news to share. Miss Jenny informed me that an unsuspected rainstorm is on the way.
Wasn't it supposed to be sunny all day and rain next week? quizzed Oliver.
That's what the meteorologist said.
Seems they got this one wrong. So, everyone will have to return to the yard.
This day keeps getting better and better, muttered Patrick.
And he drove away in a huff.
The bright blue sky had quickly been replaced by dark looming rain clouds.
Patrick was hurrying his way back home when he was stopped by a police officer.
Sorry, he said. The road ahead is closed off for the next 2 hours due to an accident.
Then I'd better find another way home fast, Patrick said.
Patrick quickly noticed the road leading towards the hills and the rain started to pour down.
Might as well take the chance, Patrick thought.
Patrick squinted to make out the path ahead through the sheets of rain.
The wind howled and the rain stung his face, but he pressed on.
And then, disaster!
A mudslide had blocked his path.
He tried to stop, but it was too late.
Flatten my tires, CRIED PATRICK. I'M STUCK.
Patrick revved his engine, but he wasn't going anywhere.
There was only one thing he could do.
He honked his horn for help. Patrick hoped someone nearby would hear him and come to his rescue.
Ned was trying to figure out a way to get back home when he heard Patrick's horn.
>> A call for help?
>> wondered Ned.
>> Oh, what's the use? sobbed Patrick.
There's no way I'll get out of this mess.
>> On your own, no. But with a little help, you'll be free as a bird.
>> Patrick gasped. Right behind him was Ned.
>> Ned? You're going to help? After after what I >> Words can hurt, Ned said sadly. It's tough being what I am. Still, I keep trying.
>> Ned, I'm really sorry. This morning, Max and Monty >> Ah, so Max and Monty are behind this.
Miss Jenny will take care of them. Now then, let's get you out of the mud.
>> Ned set to work immediately.
The rain continued to pour down, but Ned was determined.
It was hard work and took a while, but eventually, Patrick was free.
>> You did it, Ned! cheered Patrick. Thank you.
>> Ned smiled.
>> The rain eased slightly [music] as they made their way back.
Miss Jenny was nervously [music] waiting for Patrick and Ned.
But sure enough, they arrived back home.
Miss Jenny was surprised to see how muddy Patrick was.
So, Ned told her the whole story.
>> Well, spot on, Ned. You had to make a mother proud. And Patrick, I'm glad you're safe and sound.
Then she turned to Max [music] and Monty.
As for you two, your actions today would break a mother's heart. Both of you will remain in your sheds for a week.
We're sorry, Miss Jenny, said Max [music] and Monty.
After that, Patrick and Ned became friends for many years.
And that's what happened, concluded Patrick.
Thanks for sharing that story, smiled Brenda.
Your bond with Ned strengthened over the years.
It has, smiled Patrick.
We didn't get off to a great start.
However, proving that even rocky beginnings can lead to lasting camaraderie.
Can you tell me another story? asked Brenda.
I'm in the mood for another story.
Patrick jumped and looked to his right.
And there was Ned.
Have you been sitting there the entire time? asked Patrick.
Ned grinned sheepishly.
Go on, he said. Brenda wants to hear another story.
There's this one time that Patrick was bragging about who is the most important, and Isabella, we agreed that we'd never speak of that again. It was your own fault, giggled Isabella.
Another story will have to wait. Break's over, said Patrick.
The pack got back to work.
And no one put in more effort than Ned, the steam shovel.
>> Hey.
