Independent filmmakers with limited budgets can achieve commercial success by delivering compelling stories that audiences crave, as demonstrated by YouTubers Kain Parson and Cury Baker whose horror films 'Backrooms' and 'Obsession' grossed over $100 million combined, dethroning the Star Wars film 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' despite its $165 million budget and 50 years of franchise legacy.

This Shouldn't HappenAdded:
This shouldn't be able to happen. A $750,000 film by a YouTuber dethroned a Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grou. And I say this shouldn't happen not because any shade to the YouTuber. I think independent filmmakers are all what George wanted. I think they are the future. And clearly that's what the audience wants. They want just good stories, entertaining stories. Online creators are delivering a horrific one-two punch this weekend. Deadline has reported that Kain Parson and Focus features backrooms reviewed here is estimated to open with a gross between 76 to 79 million this weekend, including 10.4 million from Thursday night showings. Even more remarkably, Obsession, another Fright film from a movie maker with a YouTube background, Cury Baker, actually improved its weekend figure again in the face of its backrooms competition. After opening with 17.2 2 million 2 weeks ago. It improved to 23.9 million in its second weekend, 32 million for the 4-day Memorial Day frame, and is now estimated to jump again to 25 million. If that estimate holds, the total will be over $103 million with no end in sight. Next week, it will succeed the 116.9 million grossed by Coraline over several releases to become Focused Features highest grossing film in North America ever. Notably, although it hasn't held the number one spot for a weekend, Obsession did top the charts on weekdays over Michael in its first week and The Mandalorian and Grou in its second.
>> How embarrassing.
>> Again, if the estimates hold, both of these low-budget horror films will outdo the second weekend on the mega budget Mandalorian, which is currently forecast to make 24 million. And this will be the first weekend in which two new Fright films topped the box office made by YouTubers, mind you, since October 14th to 16th, 2022 when the debuting Halloween Ends and the third weekend of Smile led the list. This is absolutely insane, guys. Like they there is no realm where this should happen where a Star Wars movie should ever not be number one for a independent movie that costs $750,000 especially compared to the $165 million that it costs to make the Mandalorian and Grou and that's Star Wars dude that is the most famous and powerful media IP on the face of the planet in my opinion.
And I think Star Wars is has the biggest fan base of really any sort of franchise, at least back in its heyday when George was around. I think it was the biggest. I really do. I don't remember anything having that much excitement and hype at all. And now you got YouTubers that are dethroning it.
Um, mind you, of course, yes, it is Mandalorian and Grou, but still it should not be dethroned, especially by a random film that has no precult following before it, nothing established before it like Star Wars has, like 50 years of love and lore and fandom and generations behind it and merchandising and so on so forth. It should never be dethroned by uh anything especially, let alone, you know, something that is so independently made. And I am all for independently made films. I wish that I could throw Vader Episode 2 into theaters, but uh sadly um I can't. Well, besides the one that I'll rent out for you guys and do the premiere of, but besides that, I hope to really throw my name in the hat too for this as I'm almost done my book if you guys have heard me talk about it. I'm at page 230 now and it's shaping up to be pretty interesting. And this is a part one of a trilogy. So, I'm excited for that. And I want to turn that into a movie, of course. But all of that takes time and takes a lot of money. And I kind of spent all that money on beta episode 2, which won't bring me any money whatsoever. But, uh, at least I'm practicing. So, um, huge congrats to these YouTubers that honestly followed their dreams and just picked up a camera and, you know, got this small budget movie made that has now amassed $100 million. Uh, they've essentially made a hundred million, which is pretty wild. I mean, not including costs and expenses and all that stuff, but it's insane to me. So, I think that Hollywood and movies have gotten so stale and so bad and they've lost the plot so badly that people are so hungry for something that is just a good story that has proper character development. And I keep saying that word time and time again because it's something that is so missed today and something that doesn't shove politics down your throat and is just a good story. It isn't predicating itself on anything other than that. Just being entertaining, perhaps scaring you, perhaps inspiring you, making you entertained in a positive and hopeful, strong way, and just taking you on a journey, an adventure. And I think that that is really missed in Hollywood today in movies. And if the huge companies and media companies and corporations out there can't do it with their $100 million films, I'm glad to see one of my own YouTubers are doing it themselves.
Because YouTubers, I feel like they get a bad rap. We think of YouTubers and we're like, "Ah, it's just some self-conceited piece of dag who's just like running around with a camera in his face." And frankly, that's what you kind of have to do. You have to I mean, no one's going to film your stuff for you. But you are literally the writer, producer, director, marketing team. you you are all of that in one as a YouTuber. And it is very difficult work and to just be able to get out there and do that and not worry about scrutiny, not to worry about, you know, haters or anything like that and just continue on your vision, your path. And I'm just happy to see that these people just took a shot in the dark. They put their name out there. They did their best and they created. And I think we are on this earth to create and share our creations with other people and to formulate beliefs and thoughts and talk about them and create dialogue around the things that we create. Some are better, some are worse, some can be improved. But I think that's really a major point of life is to create beautiful, nice pieces of entertainment, art, and things that you are proud of.
And clearly the proof is in the pudding here with this $und00 million that this YouTuber made with a $750,000 movie. So, pretty freaking awesome. Dethroned Star Wars. Unbelievable. Never thought I'd see the day, but hey, more power to them. I haven't seen the film, but I heard it's pretty spooky, pretty creepy, but it's like got a very simple story line. So, um, for those who have seen it, let me know what you think about it.
And I hope you all have a great day. And if this leaves you with one thing, it's that just try.
Never know. Never know. May the force be with you. See you in the next one. And here's to all the YouTubers out there making their dreams come true and to Star Wars hopefully getting better.
Now fulfill your destiny.
