Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) has been officially renamed to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) because the previous name was misleading, as many patients with the condition have normal-looking ovaries on ultrasound but still experience symptoms like irregular cycles, hair loss, weight issues, and mood changes; patients should advocate for comprehensive testing including hormone levels, insulin levels, and metabolic panels rather than relying solely on ultrasound findings.

PCOS is Now PMOS Nurse Practitioner Explains #nursepractitionerAdded:
Yeah, I don't know if you've heard, but PCOS got a name change and we need to talk about it. So, for decades it's been called polycystic ovarian syndrome, PCOS, and the whole name was super confusing because it didn't necessarily require you to have cysts in your ovaries. So, a lot of women were misdiagnosed. Experts announced that they're renaming it and calling it poly endocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome.
And I think that's a name finally tells the truth about what the condition is.
It's not just about what your ovaries look like on an ultrasound. And why does that matter? It's because so many patients would come in saying that their ultrasound looked fine, but yet they were suffering from irregular cycles, hair loss, weight issues, mood changes for years and they did not have an answer. If you've been told that you don't have PCOS because your ovaries look normal, I recommend going back to seeing your health care provider and asking about your hormone levels and your insulin levels as well as your metabolic panel. You always want to advocate for yourself. So, if your health care provider doesn't listen, you may want to get a second opinion with someone that does.
