New York City unions have been securing significant wage increases (3% annual raises plus lump sums for rail workers, $61+ hourly for housekeepers, and 12%+ for nurses) despite high living costs, with union membership at historic lows compared to the 1950s-1970s peak when one-third of US workers were unionized.

Why do New York's unions keep winning? #shorts #union #strike #NYC #economy #inflationAjouté :
Does New York City have the most powerful unions in the US?
So, on Tuesday, the union of the Long Island Railroad workers ended strike with a deal that would give at least a 3% annual pay raise and a lump sum $3,000 payout. Well, according to the MTA, the annual median salary for rail workers has already hit 135k. Also this week, hotel housekeepers reached a deal that will bring their hourly wage to over $61 by the end of an 8-year contract. So, more than 100k by year six. But here's more. Doormen and nurses also want a new deal this year. More than 10,500 nurses will have their salaries increased by more than 12% over the next 3 years. Many of them now already make more than 100k per year.
Well, these might sound a lot, but you have to consider how expensive New York is. A two-bedroom apartment can easily cost more than $3,000 a month even in cheaper neighborhoods. And daycare can run from $2,000 to more than $4,000 a month in Manhattan. So, many people argue these raises are barely keeping up with inflation. But even with more union workers are going on strike, we're still at a historic low compared to our parents' generation. From the '50s to the '70s, major strikes in the US could hit more than 400 year across the country. Well, a third of US workers were in unions during the peak.
