While social media dismantles traditional gatekeepers, it risks replacing genuine artistic depth with the performative demands of algorithmic virality. This democratization offers unprecedented access but often prioritizes fleeting engagement over enduring musical substance.

>> Oh, that's good.
>> We were playing your music before you got here and I was like, obviously turn it off before he gets here. It's embarrassing.
>> That is embarrassing.
>> [laughter] [gasps] >> Okay.
Do you need a beret?
>> No, I I think I'm good with this. I'll just Let me know if it ever gets in my face. [music] >> Okay, do you want to do a over?
You know how like on the when you reveal the bride?
>> okay.
>> Yeah.
>> Like like this?
>> Yes.
>> Does this look good?
>> Stunning.
>> Okay.
>> Without further ado, let the trials begin.
>> Wow, this is insane.
>> Do you feel completely immersed?
>> Well, I didn't That's just crazy. I didn't expect that to happen.
>> You have Uncrustables on your rider.
>> Yeah.
>> Strawberry or grape?
>> [music] >> Strawberry.
>> Strawberry.
>> Anyone who eats peanut butter and jelly with grape jelly [music] cannot be trusted.
>> What about like a blackberry preserves?
You know, like what about when you get real country like that?
>> No.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> You were dubbed white boy of 2025 by Quinn Blackwell.
>> Really? Thank you so much, but I'm not worthy.
>> Who are you passing that torch to in 2026?
>> 26? Wait, let me actually think about that for a second because I have to like really [music] um choose wisely. I mean, Harry's back.
Like >> Harry is back.
>> I'm I'm no longer employed, so I feel like it's not like I gave it to him. I feel like he just took it.
>> He snatched it.
>> And rightfully so, he deserves it. So, I'll just step back.
>> I mean, cuz that's respectful, you know.
>> like it's like a respect thing. It is.
>> Yeah.
>> You once said, "If you ever see me working out, they got me. I've been cloned." Is there anything else that would be a sign that you've been cloned?
What would you never do?
>> Ea- eat grape jelly. Um >> Yeah. It's a big no-no.
>> I don't know, dude. Yeah, I think it's working out. But actually, genuinely did start working out a little bit recently cuz I >> Wow.
>> Yeah. Um it's a long story, but I've I've already stopped. It was like a three-day >> [laughter] >> three-day thing.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> But you tried, and that's important.
>> I would say for you, cuz I know you very well, uh waking up at 8:00 a.m.
>> Yeah, they've [music] they've cloned me.
>> Yeah. That's just not happening.
>> Yeah, that's never going to happen.
>> I would so much rather stay up until 6:00 a.m. and sleep all day. Cuz the the night is so magical.
>> It's so magical, especially if you're creative. Like that's >> Completely agree. Why do you think that it >> I think I think it's cuz it's like when everything is the most silent and like there's no distractions. Like it needs to be 3:00 a.m. Noth- None of my friends can be awake. Nothing Nothing can be going on.
>> I think it's truly like it's isolation.
Like no one's texting you. You're the only person awake. Like it's something very >> No one loves you.
>> No one likes you. No one wants to talk to you. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> In 12 to 12, you mentioned the last and final puzzle piece. Are you a puzzler?
You ever doing jigsaw? You doing phone games?
>> a I think my lyrics are puzzles. Like you have to Sometimes you have to dig [music] deeper to figure out what it's about. I'm a puzzling guy.
>> You ever play Clash Royale?
>> You play Clash?
>> No, I'm more of a uh >> So, you just looked it up. Like I thought you were cool like that. I thought know.
>> No. I got people around me that play Clash Royale though. You You have some allies in this room. And guess who it is? That big tall white guy right there.
>> [laughter] >> Let's go, bro. Let's go.
You're the You're the white boy of 2026.
>> [laughter] >> And I don't know you anymore.
You say you're on another path while I'm stuck in the past.
>> Ugh.
It's great. Yeah.
>> If you had to go back in time, what time period are you picking to live in?
Probably like um 20 20 um >> 2020?
>> 2020.
>> [laughter] >> Great year.
>> Yeah.
>> What What do you think you would thrive in?
>> In 2020?
>> In 2020 or in like a certain, you know, wartime? Maybe um medieval time.
>> I saw a TikTok that was like like imagine imagine Gen Z going to war and like sombreros just charging at you.
>> [laughter] >> And it had like 500,000 likes.
And I didn't know whether to be offended or like >> [laughter] >> like cuz people in the comments were like, "Wait, that'll be so scary."
And I think >> What the >> I was like I don't know, like genuinely opened my phone to see that. I was like >> [laughter] >> like so maybe I would go back to 2020 not have a music career so people couldn't say those things about me. But But I think Yeah, I think if I were to go to where I'd be the scary guy that charges at people.
>> You'd be leading the >> charge.
>> [laughter] >> Oh my god.
That's so um You know what?
>> [snorts] >> We have to laugh.
>> Yeah, it's so I find that stuff really funny. So that's >> I got a comment the other day. Uh someone Cuz I I love these TikToks where people are like, "My ballet flat collection." Like I posted this whole It was a 10-minute review. Someone commented, "Okay, forehead."
>> [laughter] >> Hey, so Thanks for your comment.
Thank you for your comment.
>> Thanks for engaging. That's what you what I do have to say.
>> Somber summer is on the way.
>> Somber.
>> Somber.
>> Yeah.
>> What does that entail? Is everyone just off the pina colada?
>> No, we're we're in our dark bedrooms suffering. No friends, no lover.
>> Is the AC on or are you sweating?
>> Oh, we sweat.
>> Yeah. So, just sweating and crying?
>> Yeah. I actually when I make my music, I purposely don't turn on the AC so like I can suffer and sweat and like it it makes me hungrier to like work and like make a good song. Like I have to be sweating like a jazz musician when I make my music. Like yeah.
>> I like that. That's the meta. You got a a sweat towel?
>> Yeah.
>> Great.
>> You paid $20 for three strawberries?
>> Yeah. Oh my god, [laughter] you did your research.
>> I did.
>> I'M ALSO GRAMMY NOMINATED.
>> [laughter] >> I DON'T REALLY CARE ABOUT THAT. I'M MORE CONCERNED about the strawberries.
>> Sorry, that was I'm really proud of myself for that.
>> That was hilarious.
>> Give me a second.
>> [laughter] >> You said that you're Dubai chocolate in a world of Laboos.
What do you think What do you think I would be?
>> Um I think you're a Dubai chocolate.
Yeah.
>> Do you mean it?
>> Yeah, of course. I think you're more like a like a how can we go back to being friends?
>> We just shared a Dubai chocolate bar.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. With that, you paused.
>> Yeah.
>> [applause] >> Thank you.
>> Well, Lord Somber, how are you feeling?
>> I'm feeling so good.
>> I'm so happy to hear it. I feel great.
Again, I'm sweating. I'm sweating.
>> I'm I'm genuinely sweating.
>> [laughter] >> Can you smell it?
>> No, I can't smell it.
>> Okay, good.
>> Can you smell me?
>> No. I always >> Why'd you hesitate? Why'd you hesitate?
>> Because I have like a processing issue.
>> [laughter] >> I hear you brought me something.
>> Yeah.
>> Squire!
>> Why you just clap at it?
Oh.
>> Is that a live animal?
>> It's a capybara.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah. But >> Is he wearing your merch?
That's so stupid.
>> Because so there was a thing with my song Home Recorder where people thought I was saying I just know I can be better and they thought I was saying I just want to capybara. So this is like the mascot of my fandom. So I thought I would gift [music] you a capybara as a peace offering.
>> What beef was between us?
>> no beef between us but I just so my people know that like we with you.
Like So it's just [music] like she's valid. Like we're >> Guys.
>> we're chill. So.
>> I'm valid as in this Home Recorder phase. [laughter] My god.
>> Yeah.
>> This is so kind. Can you get his little t-shirt?
>> It's so cute, right?
>> It's adorable. Thank you. Thank you for my capybara.
>> Of course.
>> You were recently the musical guest on SNL.
I want to know if you hosted SNL, who would you pick as your musical guest?
Who would you spotlight like that?
>> Probably he just did it but Paul McCartney.
>> Are you Beatles head?
>> I love the Beatles. How can you not like the Beatles?
>> Who was your favorite Beatle?
>> My favorite Beatle My favorite Beatle is probably Paul. I just saw his show at the Fonda and it was the best concert I've been to in my life.
>> I saw him one time in 2012 and it was in a baseball stadium. I was so I would literally we brought binoculars to see.
>> It was Minute Maid Park in uh Houston, Texas.
>> It was the best night of my life, like truly.
>> It's like it's just seeing him live is just he he he is so good and his band is so good.
>> And he's only about 150 years old.
>> And he still [laughter] sounds so good.
>> Do you do like dad rock? Are you into like Steely Dan and all that?
>> Well, I have a dad, so.
>> Of course.
>> He's He's played all that >> Classic dad.
>> Yeah. Are you into dad rock?
>> I do like dad rock. Yeah, I've been into um Well, this isn't dad rock but I don't know I was going to say this, Radiohead.
>> I love Radiohead.
>> I'm trying to lock into Radiohead cuz I feel like that's just been a blind spot for me. So, I'm a minute.
>> Uh Radiohead is I think dad rock for me because my dad [music] played Radiohead when I was growing up.
>> awesome.
>> Yeah, so he's awesome. Um but I think you should get into Radiohead.
>> I will.
>> For you?
>> I will.
>> Yeah. K, you began releasing music around 13.
>> Yeah.
>> Under Cherry Valley.
>> Woah.
>> That was the name.
>> Yeah.
>> Do you feel safe?
>> I feel safe. I feel safe. I was just like not expecting that. That's crazy.
>> Where did that come from?
>> Cherry Valley. So, I was I was in high school and I was like making I was like uploading on SoundCloud and I was making probably the worst music you've ever heard. And it was called Cherry Valley. And then like my Sommer fans found it and exposed it and I'm like low-key like Cherry Valley would be so happy that people were listening, but guys never listen to that again, please. Yeah, it's really It's like It's like if someone like found like your old Snapchat memories, you know, from high school, you know?
>> It gets to a point where it's you're not my fan, you're disrespecting me.
>> No, well, it's not a disrespectful. Like it's fine, but it's like that's embarrassing, y'all.
>> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
>> to embarrass me.
>> With that, you've passed.
>> [applause] >> Let's go.
>> Lord Sommer.
Baby Sommer.
In front of you is a shield.
>> Mama.
>> [laughter] >> In front of you is a shield.
I'm going to make you draw your answers to the prompts on the shield.
And I'm going to ask you some more kind of serious introspective questions, okay? Now, you will be double tasking.
So, if you need me to repeat a question, by all means ask, okay? Feeling good?
Cool. Okay. You've said that when you write a life-changing song, when you listen back to the chorus, you feel it.
>> Yeah, it's like goosebumps.
>> Can you describe that feeling? I guess like mentally what goes through your head?
>> It's like like you listen back and it sounds instant. Like it sounds like like you're listening to a song you've heard before, like in a good way, like in like this is a hit. And like you get goosebumps and I feel like a rush of adrenaline cuz I'm like this is going to be great for me. I >> know that feeling that you're talking about where it's almost like not even it's like with any song, you know, when I hear it and I'm like, it's almost like this was always supposed to exist and it finally exists.
kind of thing.
>> Exactly and it's like you have to like it has to make you feel something like emotional and it has to be real. Like it's not like like it happens after like I set out to make the most perfect pop song and like what did I just spit out?
The most perfect pop song or the most perfect hit. It's like it really is coming from the heart and like I'm going through something and I really had to get there and feel that. I'm like, damn, I just left it all in the song.
>> You've described happiness as inconsistent for you.
>> Yeah.
>> When it does come, where does it come from and where has it been coming from lately?
>> I would say touring.
I feel like when I'm writing I isolate myself and I get sad and then when I tour and I'm able to like be with my people I get so happy and like there's no like I'm not on tour right now and I literally made a video the other day and I was like, dude, I'm alone tonight and like I just want [snorts] to be with you cuz I get to be with them every night. We play the show and then after the show I go and like hang out with my fans outside and like meet people and talk to people and people will tell me stories and it's just like, wow, it really puts everything into perspective >> [music] >> and makes everything feel real because it's so easy to like see everything as numbers or like statistics, you know, with this career but I don't like to look at it I I I I >> [music] >> need that human connection.
>> Totally.
>> And um yeah, just counting down the days till my tour in the fall.
>> I think also in a world post COVID, like those even the prospect of going to a live show for your favorite artist and like the potential of meeting them after the show. I mean, it's like that felt like it was taken away. So, it's almost more precious now that it's back, you know?
Do you feel that way?
>> I feel that way and I think I just think it's so good that people are going to concerts because I think music is so important [music] and live music is best.
>> Completely agreed.
>> Like what is it life without music What is life without music, you know?
>> a life.
>> It's suffering.
>> Completely agreed.
>> It's also suffering with music.
>> And if you listen to Sombra's music >> [laughter] >> Yeah.
>> It's both. You've said that when you were growing up you ruled out the idea of the kind of success you have right now cuz it's kind of drilled into young artists that the odds are stacked against them.
>> Yeah.
>> You produce your own music, you write your own music. Do you have a message for those young creatives that might be in their bedroom like looking at your career being like, "Wow." Like what message would you send them?
>> Yeah. Well, I I I think the the thing that people say and the thing that people would say when I was growing up cuz I'd be like, "I want to be a pop star. I want to be a rock star." was like "That's like a one in a billion. People don't become pop stars." Like that's literally what my parents would say. And all I wanted to do was make music. It wasn't I didn't want to be famous or known. I wanted to just do it for a career cuz I wanted to do what I love.
So, I kind of had to do it myself and like learn to produce by watching YouTube videos and and just learn to write by like studying songs and I I I I just slowly evolved. You can hear my evolution, you know, on on the internet. And I um and then a lovely tool called Tik Tok came along where you can could um you know, anyone can post their music and then it just it worked out. People found my music and I'm so grateful and I would say like >> [music] >> like it is it is easier than ever and and we have so many tools that are accessible to to get our music heard.
Anyone can get your music heard. Even if you can't afford recording equipment and you just want to play a guitar or sing acapella in your bathroom, you can do it and you can post it >> [music] >> and it can go viral and you can get signed. Cuz I was in high [music] school and I had made this song Caroline which no one even knows today.
But I produced it myself, I wrote it myself and I thought it was amazing. And I I TikTok was like a new thing and like I just posted it on TikTok one night and I was so scared and embarrassed and like wanted to delete it cuz I was like, "Oh, everyone's going to see this and make fun of me at school." But I decided to go to bed and not think about it and I woke up the next day and it had like 200,000 likes.
>> Easy.
>> Which is felt like the [music] biggest thing in the world and then from there labels saw me and like that was like it's So my point is you're literally one post away always. You're like one song away. It's like you know that that photo of like the the minor that's like [music] and the diamond is like right there and he's like [laughter] like it was like this.
Yeah, it's like that but literally that's if you want to do what you want to do, it's like that. Like you could be right there. Don't give up.
Anyone can do it.
>> Damn.
>> We [music] have to do this.
>> Come on.
I have a similar >> by the way? Like >> Well, I was just about to say I have a similar kind of upcoming of I was working at a bank and I was coming home after my unfulfilling soulless job at the bank and I was like posting content on TikTok to make my friends laugh and it was a similar thing. I posted some stupid it was the kombucha [music] thing. I posted that and overnight I woke up the next morning with 30,000 followers. And I was like, "This dumbass video?" And then from there, I was kind of like, "Okay, let me ride this train for a second." Kept posting videos. I knew, cuz I've been on the internet for so long, like, "Let me diversify. I'll post this kind of video.
I'll put Then I started posting YouTube videos, whatever." And then it turned into this.
>> [music] >> So, it's like >> That's crazy.
>> nuts, cuz it's not on purpose.
>> Yeah. And the thing I love about TikTok is like like, it's like the people get to choose who they like.
>> It's democratic.
>> like, literally, it's like you can't you can't like make people anymore, because it's like, at the end of the day, with these algorithms, it's like it's like, you're either doing it or not, you know? So, it's like and it's such a beautiful thing and anyone can do it.
>> I completely agree. And also, in the AI conversation of it all, we need more human art to like post your art.
>> 100%.
>> It's never There's never been a better time to post your art than right now.
>> 100%. And but but human human art will always win. It will always win. Cuz AI can't have emotion.
>> I completely agree. AI could never lock themselves in their bedroom and cry and make themselves suffer and then write a song.
>> AI could never be this charming and hilarious. [laughter] >> Well, Lord present us your shield. Could you restate the prompts for me?
>> Okay, so, my favorite instrument, it's really hard, but I I think I had to go with guitar.
>> Classic.
>> Um my my happy place is the stage. I don't know which the stage.
Something beautiful, you.
>> Oh, quit.
>> laughed at that forehead thing earlier.
>> [laughter] >> Um and then a capybara. This is my capybara.
>> Actually, it's very rudimentary. It's very >> [laughter] >> One through 10 of this?
>> Yeah.
>> Easy, 10.
>> Thank you so much.
>> Incredible, Lord [applause] Thank you. Could you sign it for me?
>> Yeah, of course.
>> We're going to sell it on >> eBay.
>> Go Go >> Well, Lord IT IS MY UTMOST pleasure and privilege to induct you into MY ROYAL COURT.
>> THANK [cheering] YOU SO MUCH.
WAIT, WHAT? Do what? Do [laughter] it one time.
>> With that, we'll proceed with the knighting. Stay where you are.
Very sharp. Be careful.
I knight thee, Lord Somber, the boost is loose, youngest songsmith IN THE REALM.
>> [applause] >> YEAH? YEAH? LET'S GO.
>> And a parting gift for you.
>> Oh my god. Thank you so much. This is Thank you. This is so fun.
>> Oh, yeah.
Did you have fun, seriously?
>> Yeah. No, that This was like the best one cuz you're not trying to get me.
>> Lord Somber, is there anything you'd like to promote to my realm?
>> I have a song coming out next week, June 25th at 3:00 p.m. PST.
Um and I'm going on tour in the fall in North America. Um and you can see me in your local arena, in your hometown. Um and I'll come and give you a very special show.
Yeah, and Britney's going to be coming out at the LA show.
See you there. I love you.
>> Thank you, Lord Somber. Guards, take him away. Goodbye.
>> How do I do this? How do this?
Oh. Oh, I hook.
>> [laughter] >> Sorry, I've never had a girlfriend.
