Christian apologetics, as exemplified by St. Justin Martyr, involves defending the faith with gentleness and reverence rather than aggressive debate; effective apologetics requires keeping arguments in your 'back pocket' for when questions arise, approaching conversations with wonder and humility by saying 'I don't know' when appropriate, conducting research after conversations rather than before, and using the scholastic principle of 'never deny, seldom affirm, always distinguish' to engage thoughtfully with differing viewpoints.

Today we celebrate the memorial of St. Justin Martyr. St. Justin, philosopher and martyr, was born a pagan parents at Flavia Neopoulos in Samaria at the beginning of the 2 century. Following his conversion to the faith, he wrote many works in defense of religion, of which we only have two, the apology and the dialogue with Trifo. He also opened a school at Rome in which public debates were held. Justin was martyed along with several companions during the reign of Marcus Aurelius around the year 165.

From the book of Job.
Job took up his theme a new and said, "Oh that I were as in the months past, as in the days when God watched over me, while he kept his lamp shining above my head, and by his light I walked through the darkness.
As I was in my flourishing days, when God sheltered my tent, when the Almighty was yet with me and my children were round about me, when my footsteps were bathed in milk and the rock flowed with streams of oil, when I went forth to the gates of the city and set up my seat in the square, then the young men saw me and withdrew, while the elders rose and sto rose up and stood. The chief men refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands. The voices of the princes was were silent and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths. But now they hold me in derision who are younger in years than I, whose fathers I should have disdained to rank with the dogs of my flock. Yet now they sing of me in mockery. I am become a byword among them. They abhore me. They stand aloof from me. They do not hesitate to spit in my face. Indeed, they have loosed their bombs. They lord it over me and have thrown off restraint in my presence. To subvert my paths, they rise up. They build their approaches for my ruin. To destroy me, they attack with none to stay them. As though a wide breach, they advance. Amid the uproar, they come on in waves. Over me rolls the terror.
My dignity is borne off on the wind, and my welfare vanishes like a cloud. One with great power lays hold of my clothing. By the collar of my tunic, he seizes me. He has cast me into the mire.
I am leveled with dust and ashes.
I cry to you, but you do not answer me.
You stand off and look at me. Then you turn upon me without mercy. And with your strong hand you buffet me. You ri raise me up and drive me before the wind. I am tossed about by the tempest.
Indeed, I know you will turn me back in death to the destined place of everyone alive.
All night long my bones are racked with pain that never sleeps.
>> God has cast me into the m where I am like dust and ashes. Spare me Lord for my days are but >> God has cast me into the mind where I am like dust and ashes from the acts of the martyrdom of St. Justin and his companion saints.
The saints were seized and brought before the prefect of Rome, whose name was Rusticus.
As they stood before the judgment seat, Rusticus the prefect said to Justin, "Above all, have faith in the gods and obey the emperors."
Justin said, "We cannot be accused or condemned for obeying the commands of our savior Jesus Christ."
Rusticus said, "What system of teaching do you profess?"
Justin said, "I have tried to learn about every system, but I have accepted the true doctrines of the Christians, though these are not approved by those who are held fast by error."
The prefect Rusticus said, "Are those doctrines approved by you, wretch, that you are?" Justin said, "Yes, for I follow them with their correct teaching.
The prefect Rusticus said, "What sort of teaching is that?" Justin said, "Worship the God of the Christians. We hold him to be from the beginning the one creator and maker of the whole creation of things seen and things unseen. We worship also the Lord Jesus Christ, the son of God. He was foretold by the prophets as the future herald of salvation for the human race and the teacher of distinguished disciples.
For myself, since I am a human being, I consider that what I say is insignificant in comparison with his infinite godhead. I acknowledge the existence of a prophetic power. For the one I have just spoken of as the son of God was the subject of prophecy.
I know that the prophets were inspired from above when they spoke of his coming among men.
Rusticus said, "You are a Christian then." Justin said, "Yes, I am a Christian."
The prefect said to Justin, "You are called a learned man and think you know what is true teaching. Listen, if you were scourged and beheaded, are you convinced that you would go up to heaven?
Justin said, I hope that I shall enter God's house if I suffer in that way, for I know that God's favor is stored up until the end of the whole world for all who have lived good lives."
The prefect Rusticus said, "Do you have an idea that you will go up to heaven to receive some suitable rewards?"
said, "It is not an idea that I have. It is something I know well and pulled to be most certain."
The prefect Rusticus said, "Now let us come to the point of issue which is necessary and urgent. Gather around then and with one accord offer sacrifice to the gods."
Justin said, "No one who is right thinking stoops from true worship to false worship."
The prefect Justicus said, "If you do not do as you are commanded, you will be tortured without mercy." Justin said, "We hope to suffer torment for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ and so be saved. For this will bring us salvation and confidence as we stand before the more terrible and universal judgment seat of our Lord and Savior."
In the same way, the other martyrs also said, "Do what you will. We are Christians. We do not offer sacrifice to idols.
The prefect Rusticus pronounced sentence saying, "Let those who have refused to sacrifice to the gods and to obey the command of the emperor be scourged and led away to suffer capital punishment according to the ruling of the laws."
Glorifying God, the holy martyrs went out to the accustomed place. They were beheaded and so fulfilled their witness of martyrdom in confessing their faith in the Savior.
I have preached faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and now I fear no danger. I do not count my life more precious than my work which is to finish my course the task of preaching and proclaiming the good news of God's grace.
I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is God's power at work, bringing salvation to all who believe in it. Jews first and then Greek. I do not count my life more precious than my work, which is to finish my course, the task of preaching and proclaiming the good news of God's grace.
I lift up my heart to you, oh Lord, and you will hear my morning prayer.
to my words earl.
to my groaning.
My king and my god it offer you my praying and waiting. You are your God who loves evil.
The sinner is your guest shall not stand their ground for your face.
The deceitful and bloodthirsty man.
The Lord detests.
But I through the greatness of your love have access to your house.
I bow down before your holy temple.

Make clear your way before me. No truth can be found in their mouths.
Their heart is all mischieve.
All honey shall be glad.
You shelter them in youj.
It is you who bless the man. Lord >> you surround him with favor as a shield.

Give the Lord the glory of his name.

Lebanon's voice shaking the wilderness.
The Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The Lord's voice and stripping the air. The God of glory thunder in his temple. They all cried glory. The Lord sits as kings forever.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
The Lord will bless his people with peace.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it beginning for. Amen.

Praised be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation.
He comforts us in all our afflictions and thus enables us to comfort those who are in trouble with the same consolation we have received from him. As we have shared much in the suffering of Christ, so through Christ do we share abundantly in his consolation.
The Lord is my strength and I shall sing his praise.

Our Father in heaven, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us our daily bread.
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
>> Oh God who through the folly of the cross wondrously taught St. Justin and the Martyr, the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ. Grant through his intercession, that having re rejected deception and error, we may become steadfast in the faith, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.

The wicked have told lies, but not so is your law. I spoke of your decrees before kings and was not confounded. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
>> The Lord be with you.
>> And with your spirit.
>> Brothers and sisters, today we celebrate the memorial of St. Justin Martyr. Let us begin by acknowledging our sins so as to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.
I confess to Almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do. Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore, I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.
>> Lord have mercy.
>> Lordc >> Christ have mercy.
>> Christc >> Lord have mercy.
>> Lord have mercy. Let us pray. Oh God, who through the folly of the cross wondrously taught St. Justin Martyr the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Grant us through his intercession that having rejected de deception and error, we may become steadfast in the faith through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.
>> Amen.
A reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters, the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the learning of the learned I will set aside.
Where is the wise one? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of his age?
Has not God made the wisdom of the world foolish?
For since in the wisdom of God, the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it was the will of God through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who have faith.
For Jews demand signs, and Greeks look for wisdom.
But we proclaim Christ crucified.
A stumbling block to Jews and a foolishness to Gentiles. But to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
>> The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
>> The Lord delivered me from all my fears.
>> The Lord >> I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall ever be in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the Lord. The lowly will hear and be glad.
>> Glorify the Lord with me. Let us together extol his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
Look to him that you may be radiant with joy and your faces may not blush with shame.
When poor one called out, the Lord heard and from his distress he saved him.
>> The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them.
Taste and see how good the Lord is.
Blessed the man who takes refuge in him.
Allelujah. Allelujah.
>> Let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly father. Allelujah.
Allelujah. The Lord be with you. And your spirit.
>> A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord.
>> Jesus said to his disciples, "You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot."
You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden, nor do they light a lamp and put it under a bushel basket. It is set on a lampstand where it gives light to all in the house. Just so your light must shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly father. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets. I have not come to abolish but to fulfill.
Amen. And I say to you, un until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law until all things have taken place. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven. The gospel of the Lord.
So today we celebrate Justin Martyr um one of the earliest of the church fathers right after the apostles and he's he was a martyr as as we read in his name um but perhaps he could also be called Justin the apologizer.
Justin the apologizer. Not that he actually apologized in the sense that we that you and I apologize. When when we we use the term apologize. When you apologize that means you tell someone I'm sorry. But rather um in those days the word apologize meant something more like defense. He gave a defense of the faith. And so he's an apologist. Perhaps you've heard that phrase before. An apologist is one who gives a defense of the faith. Right? So Justin the apologizer, the defender of the faith. And of course there is uh a kind of a mandate for that in the New Testament when Peter says always be prepared to give a defense for for anyone who asks you to give an account for the faith that is in you. But then Peter goes on to say but do it with gentleness and reverence. And so there Peter is basically saying there is a good way to be an apologist and there's a bad way to be an apologist. Right? Peter says you have to do it with gentleness and reverence. Now the interesting thing, so just a little little bit about me. Um, I used to be when I was in high school, I used to be really into apologetics. Um, I I wanted to be kind of a professional apologist like they have over at Catholic Answers and things like that.
And so we had perhaps you've had Jehovah's Witnesses knock on your door. I mean, who hasn't?
Um, so I remember when I was a teenager, we had Jehovah's Witnesses knock on our door and um I I was so excited. I I said, "Come on in. Come on in." And so so we we brought them into our living room and then we took out our Bibles and then it was war.
Um and did I convert anybody that day?
Nope.
Um, so that it said something about like um there is maybe a way if you think of apologetics as like debating. Um, you're not actually it's not going to actually do any good. It might be fun for you and possibly for them or possibly not, right? It might be fun. You might be having a lot of fun, but you're not actually going to convert anybody. Um, so I think like like Peter was saying, there is a good way of doing apologetics and a bad way of doing apologetics. So, um, maybe just like four points to consider, just things that maybe I've learned over over the years about doing apologetics. Number one, um, to maybe think of apologetics as something you keep in your back pocket.
You don't necessarily have to lead with apologetics, right? Because um what I have learned over the years is that most people when they become Catholic, they don't become Catholic primarily for pime or or only for intellectual reasons, right? Sometimes really all they need from you is they need to see that you are a Catholic who's not crazy. So if you can just present yourself as kind and not crazy and someone who's devoted, that might be enough for them, right?
that can actually attract someone to the faith in itself, right? And there are many other ways where people come to the faith. Sometimes it's actually an encounter with the Lord. They encounter Jesus in prayer, right? So many many different ways in which people come to the faith. Only one of them is intellectual, right? And so I've kind of learned since my teenage years that the intellectual is a is important, but it's actually um it's just one among many of many different factors of the human person and and why we believe what we believe. So um what I think what I tend to do is or what I think is a good way approach is you don't begin with apologetics.
you you keep it your apologetics knowledge you keep that in your back pocket so that when someone comes up with an objection or a question then you'll have something something to say right um so it's it's something to keep in your back pocket like like Peter said right always be prepared keep it in your back pocket you don't have to begin with it but just keep it in your back pocket so that's the first point is that think of it as back pocket apologetics um the second point is the importance of wonder in apologetics Um, and I think this is where I went wrong with the Jehovah's Witnesses, right? So, when I was a teenager and I got into that big debate with the Jehovah's Witnesses, it wasn't it was a debate. It wasn't common with me. And I think um so here's another example. When I was in college, um a Protestant came up to me and he had a lot of questions. And so what we ended up doing was we ended up just kind of like getting together each week um each evening or each week we got together one evening and just watched another episode of the Father Baron Catholicism series.
We just watched it together and then we just talked about it and um in talking about it the attitude was very much we're wondering together right we are um it's it's an attitude of come and wonder with me rather than come and debate with me come and wonder with me. And so to to recognize that I don't know everything.
In fact, actually part of what it means to say come and wonder with me is to be able to say I don't know with a smile.
Can you say I don't know with a smile when someone asks you a question about your faith that you don't know to say I don't know and then give a big smile. So be be comfortable in saying I don't know. That can be very attractive to people. So, be able to say, "I don't know," with a smile and then say, "Um, I don't know." Big smile and then say, "But I'll look it up and then I'll get back with you." Um, and actually that leads us to the next point, which is research. Um, it's okay to start conversations with people even if you feel like you don't have very much in your back pocket at all. Um, please do.
In fact, actually what I think is that we shouldn't think that we need to do a ton of research, learn everything about our faith, and then we're ready to actually have conversations with people.
It's just the opposite. You need to start by having conversations with people, then realize where you need to do research, and then that motivates you to do research. Does that make sense?
So, be able to say, I don't know, and then that motivates you to do research.
Um, so that's that's that I think is a healthy because like if you think you got to start with the research, you're going to spend a lifetime doing research. There's a bazillion things about the faith you could learn and it's just like you're not going to cover it.
You're never going to get there. You're never it's never going to be enough. Um and so, uh but I think the research part is important in a certain sense. Perhaps we're all called to a holy nerdiness.
Can you be a nerdy Catholic? And by nerdy, I don't mean socially awkward. I mean a little bit smart, maybe uh someone who is comfortable thinking about the intellectual side of the faith. to the extent that that you're able and you're interested, right? Not everyone can can think about everything intellectually in the faith, but maybe a little bit is helpful. A little bit of holy nerdiness is something that maybe we're all called to, especially here in the You're at a Dominican parish, right?
So, if you're at a Dominican parish, you are called to a little bit of holy nerdiness. Um, and then, uh, yeah, those are the four things. Back pocket apologetics, the importance of wonder, um, research. Oh, the one I didn't mention, distinguishing. You've heard me say this before. Um the old scholastic maxim is um never deny, seldom affirm, always distinguish. So if someone's presenting a position that's maybe not exactly what you agree with, rather than simply saying no, you're wrong, um and then presenting your position, take their position and distinguish where you agree and where you disagree. This this is actually um maybe a sign that you're that you're thinking kind of deeply about things. It actually makes the conversation much more interesting if you're able to distinguish what what they're saying in what they're saying between what you agree with and what you disagree with and be able to kind of like make that distinction I think is very important. So never deny, seldom affirm, always distinguish. So in conclusion, brothers and sisters, let us strive to be like Justin murder, holy apologist.
Let us now stand and bring our petitions to the Lord. We pray for the whole church that she will grow in faith, hope and charity. Let us pray to the Lord.
Lord our pray >> through the intercession of St. Justin Martyr. We pray for persecuted Christians around the world. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord our pray.
>> We pray for the sick and the suffering and for those who care for them. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, >> the mass this morning is offered for the repose of the soul of Raymond L.
Luchetsi and uh the mass this evening will be offered for the deceased Dominicans, family, friends, benefactors and those resting here. For these intentions, let us pray to the Lord.
>> Lord, >> incline your merciful ear to our prayers we ask, O Lord, and listen in kindness to the supplications of those who call upon you through Christ our Lord.
>> Amen.
Pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the almighty father.
Grant us we pray, O Lord, that we may celebrate worthily these mysteries which St. Justin strenuously defended through Christ our Lord.
>> Amen.
>> The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.
>> Lift up your hearts. Lift them up to the Lord.
>> Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right and >> it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy father, almighty and eternal God. For the blood of your blessed martyr, Justin poured out like Christ to glorify your name, chose forth your marvelous works by which in our weakness you perfect your power and on the feeble bestow strength to bear you witness through Christ our Lord. And so with the powers of heaven we worship you constantly on earth and before your majesty without end we acclaim. Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosana in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosana in the highest.
You are indeed holy, O Lord, the font of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dwfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples saying, "Take this all of you and drink from it.
For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.
The mystery of faith. We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again.
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity. together with Leo our Pope and Salvatore our bishop and all the clergy.
Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all. We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-airs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son Jesus Christ.
Omnis gloria glor.
At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
