Indian Navy's New Warships: INS Dunagiri, Agray, Sanshodhak Set for Induction | Spotlight | N18G
Added:A major boost to India's maritime power is on the horizon as three indigenous warships prepare for commissioning, marking a significant expansion of its operational capabilities. Three vessels, three distinct roles, but one clear message. India's naval fleet is growing stronger and more indigenous. The three warships slated for induction are the stealthg guided missile fragate INS Dunagiri, the anti-ubmarine warfare shallow watercraft INS Agre and the survey vessel INS Sanchod Hak. This marks another milestone in India's naval modernization drive and its push towards self-reliance in defense production. The commissioning ceremony is expected to bring together senior naval officers, defense officials, and top dignitaries.
Reports also suggest Prime Minister Narendra Modi could attend the event during his visit to Kolkata. The three vessels may be different in design and purpose, but all have been built in India by Garden Reach ship builders and engineers. The vessels represent the country's growing confidence in designing and building advanced naval platforms at home. Let's find out about these vessels in detail. So, first up is the INS Dunagiri, a stealthg guided missile free jet from the Navy's project 17A program. At 149 m long and displacing around 6,670 tons, Dunagiri is built to stay hidden.
Its stealth design reduces its radar signature as its low observable profile makes it harder to detect and to target.
And unlike conventional warships, it is built to fight al across all domains above, on as well as below the surface.
The free jet can carry Brahamos supersonic supersonic rather cruise missiles and close in weapon systems designed to intercept incoming threats.
Power comes from a combined diesel or gas propulsion system while an integrated platform management system helps control key onboard operations.
And then comes the INS Agra. That's a vessel built for a very different challenge. Finding enemy submarines before they strike. The Arnala class anti-ubmarine warfare shallow watercraft is designed specifically for coastal operations. Where the underwater threats can be difficult to track. At 77 m in length and around 900 tons displacement, Agra packs a serious punch. It is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, anti-ubmarine rocket launchers, a 30 mm naval gun, and remotely operated machine guns. It can detect, track, and engage hostile submarines operating in shallow waters. Its high maneuverability allows it to operate in confined coastal zones.
These are areas where larger warships often face limitations. As underwater activity in the Indian Ocean continues to grow, platforms like a gray are becoming increasingly important for maritime security. Now the third vessel is the INS Sanod hack. That's not a warship but a critical force multiplier for the Navy. It is the fourth and final survey vessel of the Sand Hayak class that's built to understand the sea before operating in it. The 110 meter vessel is designed for hydrographic surveys, maritime mapping and oceanographic research. On board are advanced systems including multi-beam echo sounders, autonomous underwater vehicles, remotely operated vehicles and digital side scan soners tools that can help create accurate maps of the seabed and maritime routes. Sunshot Hack also features a helipaded hanger allowing it to support a wider range of operations.
Its induction completes the Navy's four ship survey vessel program and strengthens India's ability to monitor and map strategic waters across the Indian Ocean region. Together, these three vessels bring a powerful combination of capabilities, surface warfare, anti-ubmarine operations, and maritime domain awareness. The induction comes at a crucial time as China's presence in the Indian Ocean continues to expand. These new platforms add depth, reach, and flexibility to India's naval posture. For the Navy, this is more than just a commissioning ceremony.
It is proof that India's indigenous ship building program is delivering results.
And as the country works towards greater defense self-reliance by 2047, these three vessels form a unique combination. One ship carries Brahamos missiles. The second hunts submarines and the third maps the underwater battle space.
