Waymo has implemented a strict 4-minute pickup window policy with a $4.99 cancellation fee and introduced a 'snooze' feature that allows riders to pay an additional fee to delay pickup by 2 minutes, representing the first time a company explicitly monetizes extra pickup wait time to improve fleet utilization; this approach addresses the inefficiency of idle vehicle time and encourages riders to order rides when ready, which Uber and Lyft should adopt to reduce driver wait times and increase vehicle utilization rates.

Uber & Lyft Should Copy THIS From WaymoAdded:
[music] All right. So, uh let's talk about another thing and that would be what should Uber and Lyft actually learn from Whimo? Well, first of all, I like this idea. I love this idea.
They could learn. So, Harry is doing the driverless digest. Did do you know that I'm a contributor now for the driverless digest too, Chris? Did you know that?
I'm doing like he was like, "Oh, your articles are doing well. Can you write me some?" I'm like, "Bro, I'm writing like seven or eight for RSG." I go like, "I'm knee deep and [ __ ] I don't whatever." [laughter] So, long story short, okay, so if you ever order a Whimo and your ass is not in the car in 4 minutes and 59 seconds, okay, that Whimo is gone.
First of all, Uber and Lift should learn from that. Number one. Mhm.
No 10-minute wait time. First two minutes on the house, seven more minutes and then we wait and we don't have a potentially 10-minute wait time. You know what I'm saying? Okay. So, that's one.
And they will charge you the $4.99. There's no ifs and but about it. There's no driver you can argue with. There's you cannot text the driver saying, "Oh, I'm in the elevator. I'm coming down. I'll be right there." That's that's uh that's uh uh [clears throat] that's Levi's uh I'll tip you in the app. None of that stuff happens. So Harry tried to take Whimo in LA on Saturday night. He spotted a new Whimo feature in the app in Los Angeles that lets riders pay an additional fee to delay pickup by 2 minutes.
[ __ ] brilliant by the way Mo. Okay. So, Uber, Lift, learn from this. Do this to your riders.
If Whimo is doing it, right? So, yeah, Whimo has long had um relatively strict, not relatively strict, very strict pickup policies, including a 499 cancellation or no show fee plus tax. Cool. [snorts] But this appears to be the first time he's seen the company explicitly monetize extra pickup wait time. learn this from this Uber.
This is great. Yeah. Not not give extra time. Oh, you can now have 10 minutes of wait time. No.
Yeah. Absolutely. So, the feature appears as the pickup countdown clock was close to expiring and I was about to be charged the cancellation fee. At first glance, this may seem like user interface update, but uh it's not. As Whimos scales to hundreds of thousands of weekly rides and expands into new cities, fleet utilization becomes increasingly important. Utilization meaning driver utilization becomes increasingly important because on the in this case Whimma owns the cars. Uber does not own the cars. That's why they waste your time up to 10 minutes to wait on X chips. Okay.
So the fair for this trip was 3445 to go 7.64 miles in 18 minutes or about $1.91 a minute.
By comparison, the snooze fee worked out to $125 per minute for additional weight time without Whimo putting extra miles on the vehicle. Brilliant. I think this is brilliant. I like it.
I love this. And and so uh but then Harry as a ride share driver that we all are uh figured out the hacks and put the hacks in there. Who who writes who wrote this crappy ass article?
Harry did. tax to delay. Come on, Harry did. Now, of course, if you want to save the 250 allgether, you got a few options. The tried true method of moving your pickup location around before the vehicle arrives still works. And on Saturday night, I also noticed that you can use the pull ahead feature once the vehicle has arrived to give you a few extra seconds. And then, of course, if you're really in a pinch, just open the trunk and the Whimo has to wait for you.
Or better yet, Harry, order the [ __ ] ride when you are ready to take it. [laughter] But just like every other per passenger out there, order the ride when you are ready to take it.
Yeah. Or open the door. Leave the door open. [laughter] All right. And then they have to call that door dash. They got to call door.
So a lot of people will be making money that way. But this is a great idea. By the way, Mo, they're trying to increase the utilization on the cars. Uber lift, you should learn from this.
I honestly appreciate that too because the moral of the story is if you are not out in five minutes and you you have that cancellation fee there there's no way you can get around it. Uber andyft gave way too much leniency on that. Um and it just is you know even worse because now it's oh well you know you you we don't have to charge you so we're going to take the cancellation fee back blah blah blah. Then it went to oh you know let's go to seven minutes. Oh let's go to 10 minutes. before you know it, it's going to be 15 minutes. And it's like, no. One thing I always say is work smarter, not harder. If you aren't using the Solo app, then you may be working harder. So, let's change that.
Download the app, link your accounts where you can manage your income, track your expenses, and project your taxes. Not only that, but you can plan by optimizing your time, make more, and even guarantee your daily pay with guaranteed earnings. Download Solo and begin to work smarter, not harder today. link is in the description. All right, let's get back to it. Explain this to me.
Okay, this is a pet peeve of mine. When a rider is late and you see the clock, right, gone. Now you're getting paid for wait time, right? Mhm. And you know that Uber andyft are charging a lot more to the rider than what they're paying you, the peanuts and pennies that they pay you for waiting, right? Mhm. If Okay, here's my idea. What if they passed on? What? First of all, why is Uber and Lift taking a cut of your time, your weight time? You're the one waiting. They're not doing [ __ ] It's your car. You're the one waiting. They shouldn't take anything. They should pass on all the wait time fee to you, to the driver, which we are going to discuss with Lyft on the 10th of June. Shouldn't they? Why is lift? They shouldn't be making anything. That's that's all the driver because now it's the time and the utilization that you need to wait for. And then the snooze feature, you know, that's something, hey, uh you you get a notification uh passenger paid snooze fee of two extra minutes or whatever. So you you at that point it's like, okay, you sit there. If you don't sit there that full two minutes, you don't get that that money. Then that that I completely would understand. But if you sit there for the full two minutes there, like another red countdown would pop up or something and then once it goes green at that point, that's when you could cancel if they're still not available or they can hit the snooze fee again or something. Okay, so Levi says he can explain why Uber should take a cut and they should. So explain it, Levi. Um, but uh I think this is good. Just an Uber shell. [laughter] You're an Uber shell. But but um uh this is good training Whimo is putting on the writers.
This is good training. Like if you're gonna be late, I'm gonna charge you some more, but you can push this news and because my wheels are not turning with your ass in the car, so I need to pay for this car somehow and I'm monetizing that dead time. Brilliant Whimo. So Uber learn from this.
Tell your giddy uppers the the people who go, "I'm in the elevator." And then the phone will die.
Of course, they're not in the elevator. They're still in the toilet doing their makeup or whatever and or I'll be right down. I'll be right out. Never works. Okay. Never works. So, um yeah. Anyway.
