In fantasy literature, dreams often serve as symbolic narrative devices that reveal deeper truths about characters' identities and the world's mysteries; for example, Jon Snow's recurring dream of descending into the crypts of Winterfell, where he encounters the ancient kings and stone wolves, symbolically represents his complex heritage as both a Targaryen and Stark, and hints at the crypts' mysterious connection to his true lineage.

Jon's dream of the crypts is really weirdAdded:
I feel like all I talk about on this channel are the prophetic things that the game of th that a game of thrones or a song of ice and fire has and that George R. Martin writes. But again, I am just so impressed with his ability to do this in every chapter and to really keep me intrigued but also kind of focused.
There are so many prophecies and so many weird dreams and visions that happen in this book. And if you did that in other books, I think I'd be very easily lost in. But somehow George R. Martin is able to keep my attention very well because I think he grounds things in in dirt and grime very well. I got to think about that more and maybe I'll write an essay on how he's actually able to keep my interest through apocalyptic literature because that's notoriously a difficult um genre to write. But I want to talk about this one because John has this dream that he explains to Sam and it's a beautiful section of the book too. This is essentially where Sam and John become friends and this is when Sam kind of breaks down and talks about his story. Sam's been having a really rough few days. He's kind of been beaten up and he has no friends and he's been crying at every instance and Jon kind of comes down to his level and Sam doesn't really want to talk about his backstory, but Jon talks about his backstory and something that he's been dealing with.
And this kind of loosens Sam up a little bit, but I don't want to talk about that. I'll probably talk about that in another video about Sam's backstory. But what I what I do want to talk about in this video is John's dream that he explains to Sam because it's weird and I don't understand what's going on with the crypts, but there's something strange that's happening in the crypts that I feel like is central to these novels, at least this first novel. And I don't know what's going on. So, this is the dream that he has. And this is what I I'll just I'm going to just read this.
John shook his head or Sam goes, "Do you ever find anyone in your dream?" John shook his head. No one. The castle is always empty. He had never told anyone of the dream. And he did not understand why he was telling Sam now. Yet somehow it felt good to talk of it. Even the ravens are gone from the rrookery and the stables are full of bones. That always scares me. I start to run then throwing open doors, climbing the towers three steps at a time, screaming for someone, for anyone. And then I find myself in front of the door to the crypts. It's black inside and I can see the steps spiraling down. Somehow I know I have to go down there, but I don't want to. I'm afraid of what might be waiting for me. The old kings of winter are down there sitting on their thrones with stone wolves at their feet and iron swords across their laps. But it's not them I'm afraid of. I scream that I'm not a Stark, that this isn't my place, but it's no good. I have to go anyway.
So, I'll start down, feeling the walls as I descend with no torch to light the way. It gets darker and darker until I want to scream.
He stopped frowning, embarrassed.
That's when I always wake.
What the heck is going on? What is in the crypts? Again, I interpret dreams as everything has meaning. I like maybe there's going to be characters who dream and they just dream dumb things like I dream dumb things, but I just cannot help myself but think all these dreams are really purposeful. So John goes down to the crypts and he mentions very clearly that the kings who are on their stone thrones aren't really the things that matter to him. The entire castle is empty. He's screaming for someone. And he goes down to the crypts and he keeps descending and he keeps descending and there's darkness and there's darkness and all of a sudden he just wakes up from that. There is something going on in those crypts. And again, it's one of those things, too, where I think this is uh he he's going down and he screams at them that he's not a Stark. Now, from the show, we know that he is a Stark.
Kind of a Stark. Really, you know, a Targaryen, but also kind of a Stark.
Definitely a Stark. Um, but I don't think that's necessarily just it. I don't think the Crips just hold a parentage of Jon. I think they have to hold something else. There's something mysterious going on with these crypts that I just am losing my mind trying to think through what it could be. I don't know what it is, but ah man, this is this is something that I think is maybe on the forefront of my mind with these books so far.
There's a there's a few things that are talking about like, you know, prophetic things that are going on with the Daenerys section. I'm I think I'm really curious about what's going to happen with her with uh the dragons reawakening and what that what her dreams are going to be reinterpreted as. But Jon going down to the crypts like his specifically linked to the crypts is just strange and intriguing to me and I feel like it has tons of meaning that I just do not yet know. So again, I'm really excited to keep reading these books. They are exceptionally written. I am pretty blown away by how well he has written these books. Really enjoying them. So if you made it this far in the video, make sure you subscribe. You can also like the video too. And I'll see you in the next one.
