What's in a watt?

[00:00:03][Music] what let's start with the basic definition it's a measure of the amount of work electricity does per second that's right watts measure power turn on the TV charge your phone heat up and after-school snack they all require power and the amount of power can be measured and to measure it you've got a factor in time wait what herb what time is an important part of measuring power because power is the rate of the transfer of energy you know like the way energy goes from the outlet to your phone's battery and obviously the amount of time your phone charges affects the amount of power that's stored on the battery right and watts are how we usually measure electricity power at home a TV uses around 30 watts and that after-school snack a microwave is more like 1,200 watts 40 times more power it takes a lot more energy to get that hot pocket hot so that's what a watt is all about pretty powerful stuff huh [Music]
