Vocal Coach Reacts: ARIANA GRANDE 'Eternal Sunshine' Tour DANGEROUS WOMAN - Reaction/Analysis!

[00:00:07]Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hello. Welcome back to  another reaction review video with me, Nina Schofield, singer songwriter, vocal coach,  and session musician. We are back with Ariana Grande. She's currently on tour, and we are  enjoying some of the performances that she's been doing. I know I've had a lot of requests to  watch the whole thing all the way through. So, watch this space with that. Uh, I'll see  what I can do. Uh, but in the meantime, we're going to be listening to song by song things  that stand out. And one of the performances that has been recommended to me to watch is Dangerous  Woman. I've had several different nights dotted around that I should listen to. I hope I've got  a good one here. This is Ariana Grande's Oakland Day Three Dangerous Woman performance. I know  there's the LA night. I know there's so many different ones where she's sung it fantastically.  So, apologies if this isn't your chosen dangerous woman vocal, but uh all the same, I think it  will be fantastic. We'll see. We'll dive into it and do what we usually do, which is look at  the detail. So, even if that's phrase by phrase, we'll be stopping and talking about things as  they're happening. [00:01:26]Okay, are we ready to watch and see what is going  on? I'm ready for some Ariana Grande vocals. Yes, I am. Especially Dangerous Woman. What a  song. It's such a good song and it has so many incredible range things. Okay, the technical terms  there that I'm getting into. Okay, here we go.

[00:01:54]Wow. I mean, the crowds at this tour are  insane. I just have to say that off the bat.

[00:02:08]Okay. Um, let me just tell you  what this interval jump is.

[00:02:18]It's this D4 to the B4. We're just shy of octave  five here. And it's this sixth movement. 1 2 3 4 5 six notes inclusive of our first, which is  how you do interval movements. And so she's jumping this huge part of one octave already just  from the offset of the beginning of this song with power.

[00:02:49]And actually each time that she's  doing that phrase in that top note, that B4, we get a little bit more  power introduced. So she's really good at just subtly increasing the  dynamics from phrase to phrase.

[00:03:08]Let's just hear that again.

[00:03:17]I love this because of the  kind of jazzy feel behind it.

[00:03:28]I know we haven't got to that bit yet, but  it's the So, we drop down to that D4 again, by the way, from that B. the way the notes hang on uh the first one of each of the  musical phrases. It hangs there off the drums.

[00:03:56]This is the jazziness. So, just listen  to how she goes onto these notes.

[00:04:08]Yeah. Uh, so it's that kind of vibe, that sort of flattened.

[00:04:18]It's not that you're going.

[00:04:22]It's not this kind of pretty thing. It's  a grittier, jazzier, makes me feel like, you know, her delivery of this though, I  can't do it with my tone. I just wasn't born with that tone. And the way she does  it, I don't know. It does something to me.

[00:04:47]Wait, what was that?

[00:04:57]That was nice. I like that little  addition up to their E5 there. That vocal was really pretty. Just on  top of what we know of the song, the drums.

[00:05:18]Oh, I love that she's turned around. She's facing  us now. The camera is facing us. She's facing the camera. That's what I meant to say. Uh there's  intention in Ariana's delivery. I always feel that with every performance, she steps into the  zone of the song. So whatever the song lyrically is saying, she then embodies that and that's  a sign of a great performer as well. Someone who can switch up just suddenly into the the  vibe of something that maybe is completely different. But this is also where set list  and uh how you order things within your set is very important too because she will be  very mindful of that. moving through the songs in this set. A what works in terms of uh  looking after my voice and making sure that I can successfully and healthily reach these  notes in these different songs. You know, you don't want to be doing tons of crazy vocals  back to back to back to back to back. Uh and at the same time, what makes sense in terms  of dynamics rise and fall within the set and then also in terms of the storytelling and  being able to step into those zones. set list.

[00:06:21]This is a very uh we've just gone completely left  track here, but this is a very important thing to talk about. Uh set list and where a song like  this comes in the set list is very important.

[00:06:40]Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. What was  that? And the mic going back.

[00:06:48]Here we go.

[00:06:52]I can't hear it properly, but uh I think she did something like that  there. But that's cool as well.

[00:07:08]Yeah.

[00:07:12]Yeah. Just all these little details,  all the additional vocals, I think, are what sets Ariana apart. Yeah, the changes.

[00:07:30]Whoa.

[00:07:45]That E5 again. We're just hitting hitting hitting  that E5. Her power. Where does it come from?

[00:08:00]The Where are we going up to there? I don't know.

[00:08:04]There's something about the E5 in this  performance that Ariana is connecting to.

[00:08:12]Wait, wait, wait, wait.

[00:08:25]All right, up to the G5.

[00:08:43]That's the jazziness. Hear that again.

[00:08:55]Yeah, you know how I'm feeling inside. Just  that jazziness coming through. I love it.

[00:09:05]It's really just a flattened notes, you know.  Uh so if I was to play a normal G major scale, we'd go up to that nice B. Uh which is the  third of the scale. But if you flatten that, you get the minor feel. And uh  that's where that flattened that B flat's coming in. And it's just so  oof has an extra grit to it. I love it.

[00:09:31]Just rip it.

[00:09:42]And this song is great just for  expression in terms of guitar set.

[00:09:48]Ariana always gives her due to her band.

[00:09:59]Listen to the drums.

[00:10:08]Wait, wait, wait, wait.

[00:10:20]Did she go up at the end there?  Wait one more time on that.

[00:10:37]Wow, that G5. I thought it was all about the E5. No,  no, it's all about the G5 in this Ariana. I love that she just feels the music. I'm getting into  it. So, every time she does something that's a bit shocking. I'm like, "Wa, what's going on?"  Cuz I'm just getting into the vibe of the song, it's just one of those songs that takes you in  and grabs you. But, uh, oh, to feel it like this, I almost feel like I'm there because of the  audio capture. Sometimes audio capture like this, it's a shame because you don't get that  clear audio coming through, but other times it makes me feel like I'm actually  there, you know, cuz you do get blasted.

[00:11:21]Yes.

[00:11:27]Whoa, whoa, that movement.

[00:11:39]Shut down.

[00:11:44]That sounds terrible just playing it  on the piano compared to that vocal.

[00:11:47]But that was lovely against  the chord, that C, the C5.

[00:11:52]Uh, shut down. There's something about because  the chords we have this um, E minor, G to C.

[00:12:18]Yeah. I don't know. It's just the  way that her brain works and how she knows which notes. This is why  she's so good at vocal arranging, by the way. Uh the way that I'm getting in  a spin, she knows how to pluck the correct melody to improvise the correct melody  against the chords. That's the skill.

[00:12:44]Yes. Head vocal.

[00:12:50]And these we're teetering into our  uh whistle tone range that B5 there kind of want to get to the the C 6 D6 to  fully enter the whistle tone territory.

[00:13:15]I almost wanted to say that.  Can we get a break? You know, these vocals are relentlessly  good. There's too much to analyze.

[00:13:28]That's what I'm saying. She's always  giving her due. She respects her band.

[00:13:38]Wow.

[00:13:42]Oh, the drums.

[00:13:49]Yeah. Wow. I've got the goosebumps from  that. Absolutely insane vocals. And again, I can't even hear the clear  vocal capture from that. And yet, what is coming through to me is still insane.  I just fully respect Ariana and her vocals.

[00:14:08]She is a master of her craft and I'm always I'm  always going to be all in for Ariana Grande and her voice because I'm just a massive fan and you  know I've seen her on tour as well. I haven't got tickets for this tour. Um unfortunately the  dates and everything just haven't worked out for me this year which is a shame but I'm happy  you know that I get to see this and that I have experienced these vocals live.
