But when that cartilage wears away, pain increases, movement becomes limited, and the joint begins to fail. Knee replacement is designed to restore that function.

[00:00:34]The surfaces are then shaped to fit precise components that will replace the joint. Metal implants are secured to the bone, recreating the structure of the joint. A smooth plastic spacer is placed between them, allowing the surfaces to glide without friction. If needed, the underside of the kneecap is also resurfaced to improve movement.
