[00:00:02]Today we'll talk about parathyroid hormone or PTH. PTH is a water soluble hormone made by the parathyroid gland which lie behind or sometimes embedded within the tissue of the thyroid gland.

[00:00:16]PTH has one job in life which is to raise calcium level in your blood. It has another function as well which is to lower phosphate level in the blood. So you can think of PTH as a phosphate trashing hormone. How does PTH raise the serum calcium? By three mechanisms.

[00:00:39]The parathyroid hormone will help you absorb calcium from the gut to your blood. PTH will resorb bone, meaning it will break down bone and release the calcium from the bone to the blood. PTH will also reabsorb calcium from the kidneys to the blood. That's how you raise calcium level in the blood by those three mechanisms. Parathyroid hormone also helps activate vitamin D.

[00:01:04]Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. In order for you to have enough vitamin D in your body, you need sunlight. You need skin exposed to sunlight. You need a good liver and good kidneys.

[00:01:16]Parathyroid hormone will help activate vitamin D into the active form which is the calcriol which has three hydroxal groups.
