Standard algebra requires two points to calculate a slope. We can pick a point at A and another at X and connect them with this green secant line. The slope is just the rise f of x minus f of A divided by the run x minus A. This gives us the average rate of change between them. But watch what happens as x slides closer to A. We want the slope at a single point, but if x equals A, the bottom of our fraction becomes zero.
