5 Reasons Your Clothes Aren't Selling on Poshmark, eBay & Depop

[00:00:00]If your items are not selling, it's probably because of the five things I'm going to talk about today that you are doing completely wrong. Number four, I think is the most important of the top five. So, stick around for that.

[00:00:16]Believe me when I tell you I have done all of these things. I have made all of these mistakes and I am here to tell you not to do those mistakes and then you don't have to waste your time like I did. So, let's get right into it. All right. The first one I want to talk about is brutal honesty. Your photos suck.

[00:00:35]No one is going to buy your item if it looks like this. And I'm explaining about crazy backgrounds, unclear images, uh dark images, wrinkly items. No one wants to purchase from like when a item looks like that. uh we're selling the actual piece. And if you were to look through a website or a catalog, if anybody still looks through cataloges for clothing, those pictures are amazing, professionally done. Now, I'm not saying you have to be professional, but you need to put some effort into your photos. That is what is going to grab them to click on the item to dig a little deeper and find out if this is what they want to purchase. super super important. You do not need a fancy camera. You do not need fancy lighting.

[00:01:32]I literally take all of my photos on my iPhone. And I also use natural light. I make sure that when um I have a beautiful day, I am not doing things that are not photographing. Cuz if you have a beautiful day and the sunshine is [music] coming in and you have great photos, you should be taking 50 photos at that time. You should not be doing your laundry. You should not be doing your listing. If you only have natural light to work with, make sure you use it at the time that it's available. So, no more crappy pictures. It's super simple.

[00:02:10]It's super easy. and it is going to make a world of a difference when it comes to your listings and people clicking on them and people wanting to buy them. I do really think that if people are going into your closet and looking at the photos, it is very nice to have a similar or exact same background in every single photo. Now, sometimes I use my gray, light gray wall and then other times I will use a um AI photo and sometimes it has a background and that is the occasion where that's what I do because of the item looks better on an AI model. Um but I really do suggest using the exact same colored background or completely um deleting the background on all of your items. It just makes everything pop, look cohesive, and the item is getting shown and nothing else. And that's what matters to customers. Okay, mistake number two, and everybody has made this mistake, and I am still making this mistake, is not pricing your items correctly. This is very difficult and still very difficult for me. Um, you're either pricing your items way too high, nobody's going to take them, or you're actually pricing your items way too low.

[00:03:24]And this can affect it in two ways. The first way is that you're missing out on money. Um, so let me give you an example. If you saw my last video or two, I can't remember which one it was, but I sold or I priced and listed a Saison uh buttons buttondown shirt and I listed it for 50. And when I listed it for 50, it sold within minutes. Like literally like 2 minutes. And as soon as I accepted the offer, I realized that I completely underpriced that item. Don't get me wrong, I still made great money off of it, but I probably can made a lot more. So, if you're pricing your listings low, that can sometimes happen.

[00:04:04]And then also, if you're pricing your listings too low, it can just kind of make the item look and feel cheaper. Um, and I know that's kind of kind of crazy and kind of weird, but if you're pricing an item for like, I don't know, $15 just to get the sale, and the item should be probably $35 listed like all the other ones are, something or people are going to think something is wrong with that item or it's actually not a legitimate brand or it's like a knockoff brand. So, you need to be very careful with your pricing. This is going to take time, so please be patient with yourself. Don't get super discouraged. Um, I know that's easier said than done. Um, the way to start pricing your items correctly is to look at everyone else's items. So, you're looking um say you're si you're um you're trying to list like a a gap romper, a linen gap romper. You are going to go on to eBay, you're going to go on to Poshmark, and you're going to look up this particular gap romper and you're going to see what other people are pricing them at. And then you're also going to take a look to see what they sold at. And then don't forget also when you do list it, and this is how I do it, I do list a bit higher than what I really want for the item because a lot of people are just looking for a deal and they want to offer something lower, which usually happens. And this also gives you a little leeway if you want to um put your pieces on closet clear out cuz you're still making money, or if you want to send offers to likers.

[00:05:45]That way, if you price an item at $35 and you're hoping to get anywhere from like 27 to 30, it still gives you that kind of like $5 to $7 of play that you can work out with the customer and make a deal. So, pricing matters. Be patient.

[00:06:05]It will come. The number three mistake I want to talk about is it's not the right platform.

[00:06:12]I have come to realize this that not everything and I mean I guess it's kind of obvious but when you get into selling for the first time you think that everything is just going to sell on Poshmark or everything's just going to sell on eBay. And that's really not the case. And I have found out, not the hard way, but slowly have found to realize that not everything sells on Poshmark and not everything sells on eBay and not everything sells on whatnot. Um, it's it's difficult though. It's difficult.

[00:06:46]So, this is something that you need to play around with at if you are a new reseller. Um, my experience would be to put everything on Poshmark because it's the easiest platform to work with um, when it comes to all kinds of stuff, shipping and everything like that. But then once you get comfortable with Poshmark and you're ready to branch out to another platform, say Dep Depot or eBay, then you will start to realize and see what sells better on Poshmark versus what sells better on eBay. There's certain items that will sell on Depot in like 3 days flat that would take 6 months to sell on Poshmark. So, just be aware of how fast items or how well items are selling on Poshmark, Dep Depot, and eBay if you decide to go through with those um platforms because that is going to make a huge difference on the items you pick up. and it will create a lot of time for you where you know it's going to sell on Depot, just put it on Depot. Don't waste your time putting it on other platforms if especially if you don't have a crosslister. Um, it's not it's not going to all sell on every single platform.

[00:07:55]And it's not gonna all like, okay, let's say like it might sell for, you know, $45 on Poshmark and then it might only sell for like $20 in eBay. So, that's another thing that you have to take into consideration. This is a game.

[00:08:14]It takes so much practice and so much research. With that said, stop forcing every single item onto every single platform. Uh just do your research on your items, how they're selling, how fast they're selling, and what they're selling for on different platforms, and then you can kind of see a consistency on where to um list your items. All right, the fourth mistake, and I think is the biggest one, and I know a lot of people don't agree with me, um is consistency. And I know I sound like a broken record because I talk about this all the time, but I honestly think the more effort you put into something, the more consistent you are at any platform, the better you're going to do. I don't know if it's the platform itself. I don't know if it's the universe saying, "Wow, you're putting so much work into this. Let's give you a little bit more."

[00:09:11]I I'm not sure how this works, but I honestly think the more effort, the more consistency um the more working with the platform on a daily basis, the more sales you're going to make. That's just that's just my opinion. I'm going to stick to it because I have seen the numbers and they do not tell me lies.

[00:09:30]When I list multiples every single day, I sell multiples every single day. when I have a week where I am not able to list every day because I do have a full-time job. I still have teenagers in the house and I have a really hard time with listing every single day sometimes. It is very difficult to do. So, do not get me wrong when I think, oh yeah, just list 15 every single day. I totally get it. I totally get it and I know not a lot of people do for a lot of reasons because they don't have the inventory or you don't have the resources to be able to like maybe have that much inventory in your home or wherever you're storing your items. I totally get it. So, here's the thing. If you cannot list every single day at least one item, I suggest spreading it out. So let's say you picked up five items while thrifting over the weekend, but you have seven days to list. You are going to break that down into like every other day. So list two on one day, two two days from now, one one day from now. It is better to spread them out than it is to list all five items in one day. I also think that if you don't have any items to list that day, and this happens to me often because I just didn't get the photos done or I didn't get the listings up or whatever it may be, I go onto my Poshmark account every single day. I either unlist and dellist or dellist and relist, however you do it. like everybody has. I have a I have a um a bot that does that for me. So, I don't have to relist and dellist, but I do go on and I change things all the time. If an item has been sitting there, it has not been touched in a few weeks. I go in there and I edit the title. I go back in and I edit the price. I go back in and I'll change over the photo, the cover photo to something else. I am always constantly in there moving things around, changing things up and uh and sharing. I'm always sharing. And then that way all of those items are getting back up to the top of your closet. So let's say like you listed um you know a bathing suit, but you listed it 4 months ago and it's still not selling. go back in there and fool around with the title or the um tags or anything like that and then reshare it so it goes up to the top of the list. It goes back up to the top of the algorithm. Um because no one was shopping for a bathing suit 5 months ago or four months ago, but they are now.

[00:12:17]Consistency, I swear by it. I will always swear by it or I will until it changes. Consistency helps. It makes sales.

[00:12:28]It helps you. Just do it. And finishing off with number five, which I also think is a very, very important part of reselling is you're not treating it like a business. I mean, I know there's a lot of people that just want to come on to reselling and just, you know, kind of dabble and just sell their closet. And there's nothing wrong with that. That's the whole point of how Poshmark started, especially. Um, but if you are looking to grow your business, grow maybe past a side hustle, growing it into a part-time job or a full-time job, you need to treat this like a business. And in order to that, you have to track everything.

[00:13:12]And I know it's not easy, especially who if people don't know how to use spreadsheets or people who find it it's boring. It's not the sexy side of reselling. Let's be honest. I totally get that. I am doing better at my numbers because that was my number one goal um this year in January of 2026. I said, "I need to take better care of tracking my numbers to find out what is actually happening." You think you're making money on things. You think that your money is going where it's supposed to be going, but if you are not tracking, you have no freaking idea where your money is going. I promise you, you think it's going somewhere else and it's going in the complete opposite direction of what you thought. So tracking every single number, tracking every single piece of item that you buy, where you bought it, how you bought it, how much you bought it for, what you're listing it for, how much it sold for, and then finally, how much profit you made on it, and how long it took to sell. I mean, it is very, very important. Another important part of tracking your listings is to see what is actually selling and what's not. Because if you do not know that, you are still picking up stuff that you think is selling, but it's actually not selling.

[00:14:38]And you're still can you're still bringing in those items and it's wasting you time and money. So, let's say that you love dresses and you're constantly buying dresses and you see the comps and the comps are decent, the comps are good and you're continuously buying dresses, but then you also are buying a few sweaters here and there and it's kind of just a random thing. But then you, if you look back at your tracking, you will realize the 20 dresses that you bought last week, only one of them sold. and you bought five sweaters last week and all five of them sold. That is super great to know that your sweaters are going so much faster right now than your dresses are. So, this is going to bring you in a lot of money. So, it is all about research and and like I said, if you are just in here dabbling and just want to see your closet kind of get smaller and get some extra cash in, like I totally get that and you should you should absolutely do that. But if you want to grow your business and you want to scale your business, you need to record everything. And I know it's not the best part and I know it's not the funnest part, but it is one of the most important things to do so that you can go out there and source what is selling for you and you can realize how much your cost of goods are and if it's worth it to pay higher price and get that profit in. So go ahead and look over these top five things that you're doing and double check to make sure that you are doing them correctly so that you are selling to your best potential. We're going to look at photos. We are going to look at pricing. You're looking at platforms and you're also looking at your consistency. Big consistency. And then you're trying to treat it like a business.
