How Giorgio Armani Turned Rejection Into a Billion Dollar EmpireAjouté :
His father wanted him to be a doctor. He spent two years in medical school trying to become one.
Then one day he walked out and took a job dressing department store windows.
Everyone thought he had thrown his life away.
He built a $7 billion fashion empire instead.
1934, Piacenza, Italy.
A boy grew up in a household where expectations were not [music] negotiable. His father was a shipping manager who worked hard to give his children opportunities he never had. And the expectation was simple, become a doctor. So in 1952, he enrolled in the University of Milan's medical program because that is what sons [music] from respectable Italian families did.
He spent two years trying, sitting in lecture halls memorizing diseases and anatomy while feeling like he was suffocating under the weight of a life that was never supposed to be his.
In 1955, he walked out and never went back. His family was devastated. His father could not look at him for weeks.
Two years of university wasted. For what? For nothing anyone could understand.
He did his required military service and was stationed at a hospital in Verona.
When his military service ended in 1957, he took the only job he could find.
Window dresser at La Rinascente department store in Milan. It was humiliating. It was beneath everything his family had sacrificed for.
But standing in those windows, he was learning something nobody else could teach him. His name was Giorgio Armani.
In 1965, [music] he left retail and started designing for Nino Cerruti, met an architect named Sergio Galeotti who saw what nobody else did, that this man had an eye that could change everything.
On July 24th, 1975, they sold Giorgio's Volkswagen for $700 and founded Giorgio Armani SpA in Milan.
[music] The first collection launched that October. A completely different vision of what elegant meant.
>> [music] >> By 1980, his suits appeared in American Gigolo and made him famous worldwide.
Today, Armani is valued at over $7 billion and operates in 60 countries.
